BCI awards colleges gold stars: NLS B'lore, ILS, BVDU, Symbi, KLE [UPDATE]

ILS Law College Pune, Bharti Vidyapeeth Deemed University New Law College Pune, Symbiosis Law School Pune, KLE Bangalore, and NLSIU Bangalore were felicitated by the Bar Council of India (BCI) on 16 February as “outstanding” law colleges in India.

The BCI’s chairman Manan Kumar Mishra felicitated the colleges in his inaugural speech at the centenary celebrations of the regulator held on 16 and 17 February at Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi.

ILS Pune principal Vaijayanti Joshi, who is also secretary to the Indian Law Society, told Legally India that the felicitation was “in special recognition of their outstanding services to legal education”.

Joshi said: The [BCI] chairman in his address to the Prime Minister and Chief Justice of India on the dias at Vigyan Bhavan, said that in addition to NLS Bangalore, there are other institutes which have done well, out of the 900 law colleges in India.”

She confirmed that to the best of her knowledge, this was the first time the BCI had given such awards. [Picture of Joshi with BCI trophy]

A person close to the BCI confirmed the shortlist and explained that it was decided by the chairman and the legal education committee after taking into account the colleges’ performance over the past few years.

Mishra did not return calls for comment.

Update: Mishra, commenting to Bar & Bench on 21 February, said that Amity Law School Delhi had also been facilitated, and that 15 further private colleges would receive awards in the coming year. ““It is the decision of the BCI based on the performances of the colleges,” he said. “Some of the national law schools are doing well. National law schools get huge impetus from the state government. So apart from these, we have felicitated some private institutions which have been contributing to legal education

What a freaking joke!!!! Its as if they added NLSIU at the last minute just to give the entire sham process some legitimacy. Seriously - being a patriotic Indian, I shudder when I see the kind of people who lead our important institutions! They are the most incompetent. But I can only lament as I do not have the courage to get my hands dirty and actually contest for one of these posts.

But seriously - the BCI is the biggest joke!

Why was IIPM not included in the list? I understand they don't teach law; but that seems to have not been among the criteria.

BCI does it again!!! BCI does it again,
all the efforts of all colleges go in Vain,
BCI does it again!!! BCI does it again.
It shows the sorry state of affairs,
mockery of legal education in full fan and fair!

A very humble poem it is, not to forget how low law can be made!

ILS takes in good students and doen't bring out the best in them... if any of them do succeed - whether at law firms or in practice- it is because of their personal efforts to catch up with standards which have been set by graduates from leading national law schools- ils grads are in a position to do it because they have it in them to do so... i always thought that those who sacrified a year only to just get admitted into a national law school back in 04-05- were really stupid...come to think of it... loosing that one year wasn't really a bad idea, long term.. you should see the syllabus ILS follows for Company Law- you will have a laugh ! - Kudos to ILS grads who've despite it all made it big in leading corpoate law firms !

Yes thank you for the most sane law school comment in ages! I wish some of the NLUites also realised this instead of fighting about my-college-better-than-yours.

Indian higher education institutes (Barring elite DU or MBA colleges) take good students but NONE of them do anything to bring out the best in them. Its just the concerned student whose money and patience is being sucked endlessly, who wishes to make something of himself - and the admin in some institutes plays along, whereas at others it destructs even those efforts by imposing what it thinks is set in stone.

So everyone is being OH SO SILLY by defending institutes and hence giving in to the might of what are at best clown entities

Whats the hue and cry all about National Law School-ites??

Can't handle anyone else being given a pat on their back? Seems like you are not taught humility in your colleges and neither have you been taught how to bow down gracefully!

Congratulation ILS Law College Pune, Bharti Vidyapeeth Deemed University New Law College Pune, Symbiosis Law School Pune, KLE Bangalore, and NLSIU Bangalore! Well done!!

BVP, KLS Bangalore in line with NLS Bangalore. I don't know whether its an honour for former two or an insult for NLS. :P

A Golden Jubilee is not a centenary...

One is for 60 years, the other is for 100 years.

The BCI was created by the Advocates Act 1961...
