Kian, some basic, basic research before you put up such stuff please. The scholarships entitle its recipients to study in Oxford for upto 2 years, not 1 - its a common misperception that its just for one year, but thats only because the BCL (for lawyers) is of that duration and many scholars choose not to pursue a higher degree like the MPhil.

It's actually the fifth consecutive year for NLSIU, and the fifteenth Rhodes Scholar overall.

um. nls has got it for some 6-7 years running i think.

NALSAR is half as old as NLSIU but the excellent and consistent performance of the students, good infrastructure and helpful administration should now make it the #1 choice for students in the CLAT. Sadly, class 12 students are not that well-informed and will continue to put NLSIU as #1. I do not believe that people put NSLIU as #1 because they think Bangalore is better than Hyderabad (that logic would not explain why IIM-A is preferred by all to IIM-B). Some radical measures are needed to lure CLAT toppers away from NSLIU, like partnership with ISB, more student exchange programmes abroad, and most importantly it is time for a generous scholarship programme sponsored by prestigious companies.

It is true that initially NALSAR was faltering and NUJS had steamed ahead because of Prof Madhava Menon, but NUJS has fallen to a very distant #3 because of an inefficient student body, poor administration and anti-corporate attitude of its vice chancellor (this is what I hear from people there so don't start abusing me).

Atrey, this is truly fantastic.
And to top it off she has an Allen & Overy Training Contract waiting for her when she gets done with Oxford.

Congrats shreya. like last year (niranjan), extra curricular activities played a big role this year. shreya's singing talent and her melodious voice seems to have played a part.

This is the 5th year running that NLSIU, Bangalore has won the Rhodes. In fact, it has won at least one Rhodes Scholarship every year since 1996, with the exception of 2006.

For academically outstanding students, Inlaks was the scholarship to chase...(I remember 'toppers' joining a professor,himself a Rhodes scholar, at Delhi's St Stephens College,in his evening jogging rounds, hoping apparently that that would count as an "extra-curricular" activity - the professor was rumoured to be on the Rhodes committee).

completely agree with you. the Inlaks Scholarships have been the scholarships for the best scholars in India while the Rhodes is about show off and other "extra curricular activities"

but i think we should not take away anything from shreya and her extra curricular activities because that was the vision of the founder of the scholarship. since she is a brilliant singer and has a melodious voice it would go in her favour.

and btw rhodes is not only for law. you are free to chose any course at oxford. i know a friend who got rhodes and chose to do literature.

Rhodes or Inlaks - Shreya has once again proved that she is a "one woman army" - she has proved that she is the best - her rivals at nalsar and other law schools should appreciate her achievement rather than mocking at something which they could not achieve

to the guy saying NLSIU has more rhodes scholars: uh hello, NALSAR is a lot younger? NALSAR has achieved much more in its first decade than NLSIU did. NLSIU has reached a plateau while NALSAR's graph is steadily rising upwards. NALSAR is going to dislodge NSLIU for good.

Its ironical that when the entire Nalsar is celebrating Shreya's scholarship, some losers are finding THIS appropriate. There has been no other time when Nalsar was collectively so happy about one person's achievement. Thanks Shreya for bringing it to us, you symbolize true integrity.

while the nls guys seem to be taking the award of rhodes to one of them in their stride, nalsar kids seem to be drumming about it all over the place as evidence of their superiority, giving to bystanders like me that they are a bunch of adolescents pretending tio be grown ups.

I'm from a non-national law college. It seems pretty clear to me, NALSAR is the new NLS, in terms of arrogance anyway :P

Congratulations to both! The debate of NLS vs. Nalsar will go on forever, at the end of the day it's great that these two universities produce bright sparks and enventually we all end up on the same team!

Hang on ppl: Those saying Inlaks is better than Rhodes could be from NUJS rather than NLSIU, since NUJS does not have many Rhodes scholars (why would NLSIU ppl criticise Rhodes?). Since Inlaks, Felix etc focus on academics rather than all-round activites they prefers nerds, of which you will find hordes in NUJS.

Clarification: NUJS has not given a single rhodes scholar as of now.

@32: NUJS has produced only one rhodes scholar and that too many years ago. since madhav menon left that place has gone from bad to worse and the quality of students has declined sharply.

@33- you say as if madhava menon was teaching them singing/dancing and other extra curricular stuff and after leaving it all stopped for them to only focus on acads..maybe they need to put birju maharaj on their muster!

@ 34 - LMAO!!! Dude.. I laughed for half an hour after reading that post! Hahahaha.... just the thought of law students dancing on Birju maharaj tunes! Mark my words, if Birju Maharaj had the ability to get them a scholarship to study at Oxbridge, or a TC with a magic circle firm, they would do that also... in the middle of the street... naked! lol :D

It is quite interesting to see that 3 out 5 Rhodes Scholars were from Kolkata itself. 2 from Jadavpur University
