Committee absolves ex-Nalsar VC Veer Singh of Dhanda sexual harassment

Exclusive: Former Nalsar Hyderabad vice chancellor (VC) professor Veer Singh was given a clean chit by the college’s chancellor in respect of the sexual harassment allegations made against him by Nalsar’s dean of academic affairs professor Amita Dhanda.

A three-member committee was constituted by Nalsar chancellor and Andhra Pradesh chief justice Madan B Lokur, which did not find sexual harassment to have taken place.

The one-page order from the chancellor absolving Singh is dated 16 April 2012 and is signed by Nalsar’s new registrar KVS Sharma.

It stated: “The committee has concluded that the emails dated 22-12-2011 and 26-12-2011 sent by the Former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Veer Singh to to Prof. Amita Dhanda, Dean (Academic) do not constitute Sexual Harassment as has been alleged by Prof. Amita Dhanda.”

The committee comprised of Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission chairman Rachel Chatterjee, Andhra Pradesh advocate general A Sudershan Reddy, and Andhra Pradesh special secretary for state Minnie Mathew, and was appointed by Lokur to probe December’s sexual harassment allegations by Dhanda against Singh.

Dhanda had lodged a complaint of sexual harassment and defamation against Singh on 25 December 2011, alleging that the content’s of a 22 December email addressed to her by Singh had forced her to take such recourse, which was reported by the Times of India on 28 December.

Singh told Legally India: “Look here, as I said earlier all this was all calculated with a design. I don’t want to comment on all that at all.”

He added that he planned to file a suit for criminal defamation against Dhanda.

Singh is presently the VC of Chandigarh Judicial Academy, after he resigned from the post of VC at Nalsar in early February this year.

Dhanda did not respond to emails seeking comment at the time of going to press.

Is he trying to suggest a controversy that commenced with Dhanda's accusations and erupted with the committee report on NALSAR along with the second year students staging a walk out in protest while Dhanda was taking a class?

Ravina, excellent troll instigation - too convenient, maybe? Whilst the Tandons' or the PRs' comments (plural to include like minded comments going ahead) ought not to be dignified with responses, am not sure I can ignore your post. If you are genuinely from NALSAR, then I think you must cease and desist with such abuse-inviting posts (unless you arent, which I strongly suspect to be the case) - also institutions like NALSAR or NLS or NUJS would not be damaged by such tripe - they all still remain the top options today for aspiring law grads (and sour grapes for the non-entrants!).
