Exclusive: Seven law firms have swooped on NLSIU Bangalore campus and students earlier than ever, with 29 students due to graduate in 2012 having accepted law firm jobs.

Four firms – Amarchand Mangaldas, Khaitan & Co, Luthra & Luthra and Trilegal - visited NLSIU Bangalore campus yesterday (6 April), according to campus and law firm sources.

The top recruiter was Luthra & Luthra with a total of 17 job offers, yesterday giving

Amarchand Mangaldas made a total of 6 offers yesterday following campus interviews.

Trilegal left NLSIU campus with three hires to start in 2012 and one PPO.

Nishith Desai Associates and S&R Associates both made 3 PPOs each to past NLSIU interns graduating in 2012.

AZB & Partners recruited one student with a PPO.

It is understood that approximately 40 students out of a batch of 70 are currently taking part in the recruitment committee.

Last year Amarchand and Trilegal had set a new record after visiting the NLSIU campus on 25 May making a total of 15 job offers, whereas in the previous year law firms first visited the NLSIU campus in June.

Hopefully NALSAR and NUJS will also advance their recruitment timelines next season!

NUJS has 125 students while NLS and NALSAR have 80. Moreover, we are not Counting LPO Job offers as placement here, so discount that figure! :P Just for record, no student till date has joined any LPO or either NLS or NALSAR, and every year a good chunk of students from NUJS join LPOs. :P

@ 16 - Get your facts clear. Only 1st and 2nd year of NUJS have 125 students. That means 3rd, 4th and 5th year still have people around 90, doesnt make much difference.

Talking about LPO. Talk about Law firms.
Last year
NUJS -38
NLS-30
NALSAR - 22

And dnt count the offers of PSUs :P, because NUJS people dont opt for that much :P

Without any bias towards any one school - I wonder if it's the market or the students or the manner in which the recruitment is conducted by the committees.

I also wonder if I'll get away without some dimwit student slinging mud on me for an otherwise neutral comment.

@ Kian

I'm very confused. The article says

"Seven law firms have swooped on NLSIU Bangalore campus and students earlier than ever, with 29 students due to graduate in 2012 having accepted law firm jobs."

But, if you add up the total number of offers, it comes to 41.

So is it only those 29 students getting all the 41 offers?

Well, there are a lot of other firms..other than the one's mentioned. it's better if you know where you'll get a job and where you won't, since the firms mentioned most probably have no vacancy for recruitment year 2012, its better that you try your luck somewhere else. Well, you have better odds of getting a job if you apply somewhere else.
Apart from that, i comprehend form the chain of comments that the Nationals have a monopoly over a campus placements and PPOs..well i hope that's going to change soon....
And show me the difference between and LPO and an fresher in Amarchand, until and unless you are doing litigation. Surprisingly it pays almost the same....

Hey #10 - this isn't a strategy to beat foreign firms coz they come much earlier and students for the same have already been picked up.

#11 - Unlike NUJS which has a batch of some 125(wat!!) people, NLS has less than 80 with only some 40-50 ppl sitting for recruitment this time. Which means a recruitment percentage of 60% in the fist round itself. So ask yourself, did NUJS REALLY do better than NLS? :P

Ps: @29 - the reason for there being 40ish offers and only 29 acceptances is that some offers overlapped (e.g. some firms may have made an offer to the same candidate).

Out of the 70 odd people in the 2012 batch, around 5-6 are planning to opt for a career in litigation; 6 for London internships/jobs (are precluded from taking up Indian jobs); around 5 for civil services and 2-3 for higher studies. 41 job offers were made to 29 students out of the 40 who opted for recruitment with law firms in the first round, with many being offered 2-3 jobs.

Litigation - 8
Foreign Universities/ Higher Studies - 15
Civil Services - 4
Academic Research Fellow - 3
Foreign Firms - 3

That makes 33 Students out of the National Placement scene from NUJS! Bingo..

And that makes the number of students sitting for the first round more or less equal. isnt it ?

The foreign law firms (esp the UK ones) recruit students in penultimate year of studies i.e. about 2 yrs from time of graduation (usually translates into middle of 4th yr in a 5 yr law course), the indian law firms are playing catch up to this trend. I guess very soon indian law firms would also give offers to students who have just moved into 4th year.

I have been following these comments with some unattachment and as an alumni of the first batch of NUJS (yes - when we hiked seven km to go that rented govt. building where sour faced babus grudged us the two (or was it three?) floors of space, let me say my thought on the matter -

- NLSIU is undisputably the best in reputation and infrastructure by miles. Everybody wanted to get into NLS in my day, they still do, and I don't see any reason why that will change in the next five years.

- our batch at NUJS was exceptionally gifted and this has been acknowledged pretty much in most firms, companies and universities. But due to a combination of factors (Prof Menon's departure, increase in batch size to 120-130, etc.), I feel some of that spark has gone [No offence meant]

- It is a fact that these 'national' universities flourish due to lack of competition rather than their own inherent superiority.

- Placement in NLSIU is light years ahead of NUJS or NALSAR. Very similar to IIM-A versus IIM-L or IIM-C. Few people know this but IIM-C is severely hampered by its extraordinary large batch size and plenty of grads end up in mediocre jobs at first.

- NLS of Delhi could easily overtake NUJS and NALSAR though not NLSIU in the near future.

- To some extent NLS does benefit by virtue of having its alumni at the top in most places

- finally, options such as 'Civil Services' and 'Academics / LLM' are misleading - hardly anyone ever gets into the civil services from the L-schools anymore and academics is a kind word for plenty of moneyed folks who may not have necessarily got a good job thru campus placement. The LPO jobs should IMO be discounted entirely.

After spending quite a few time in NUJS, I have been able to observed few things. I have been following this series of comments since the news has been posted. When I was preparing for CLAT, I used to think about only those colleges which can provide me a good placement. And I used to think that NLS, NALSAR, NUJS have something different, and by that I mean most of the students expect 3-4. But that is not the case, as far is I have observed. I would Like to make Few points.

1. Currently, 1st and 2nd year batch of NUJS have 125 Students. And, there are around 20-30% students in these which I suppose have not come to study, and I dont know how can one expect them to get a job ( No offence, but this is the truth!). But rest 70% students are quite decent and many of them are exceptionally good.

2. I have concluded from spending time is that, the present 2nd year Batch is the best one among all the batches. Let me tell you, the reason why NUJS is able to make its position in this MPL is because of 2nd year Batch, and many 1st year students. Let me tell you the teams in which 1st and 2nd year students were present. Commonwealth( 1st year got Best Speaker), BCI moot, Vis Moot ( Both the teams), NLS Arbitration, Oxford Media etc.

3. The placement scene in NUJS I really dont know when it comes and when it goes. I have seen the arrival of firms like Amarchand, Luthra, Khaithan, Allen And Overy, Herbert Smith. But at one time I read at LI that some students have been placed, and at another when I ask my senior they said many of them have got PPO and most of them have been placed.

4. In NUJS, I have found thing that entrepreneurship is on rise. There are many young students who are involved in such activities.

5. NLS is still the best that is what is say here. I do not know much about NALSAR, but I know that many faculty members who are present here currently wanted to go to NALSAR, but didnt go due to I think departure of Prof. Ranbir Singh. And, I have also got to know that his tenure in NLUD will end within one year (correct me if I m wrong ).

6. The reason why speculations have come that NLS is degrading because of the simple reason "CLAT". Trust me or not, it is making most of the colleges more or less equal. Because there is high probability that some intelligent student miss NLS due to their silly mistake and land up in NALSAR or NUJS. And, that is why there are many exceptionally good students present in NUJS. And as correctly pointed out, it NUJS has come into picture not just because it is doing well, but also because NLS has become standstill.

7. Irrespective of the strength, placement of IIM-C was the highest last year with some 5 students getting offer of above 1 crore, and with hightest domestic package of 75 lakhs, and average 15.75 lakhs. while average of IIMA was 14.6 lakhs and some 1-2 students got.

And for a reason I dont understand why a student would get a placement, and for that reason any job just because of the college. Earlier, Firms didnt have option but to go to NLSIU, NALSAR, NUJS. But now they have more options NLIU,NLUJ,GNLU, and upcoming NLUD. And, what I think is that just because you are in National would not be enough in near future to get a job whether it is NLS or NALSAR or NUJS. Because, competition has increased than ever before.!

Regards,
NUJS Student

I second #69.

All that matters is your personal capacity.
You may be a student of NLS, NALSAR, NUJS, NLU, NLIU or GNLU for that respect, be it any of them, ur stay in a firm depends on the kind of work you do there and the knowledge you have....and if u ppl still want to carry this "I AM THE BEST FIGHT" please do !!

I am sure most NUJS alumni have some view about the progress (or regress) of their alma mater. however I do take strong exception of the generalisation made about the 'academics' by one of my purported sr.
It is the contention of #64 that 'academics is a kind word for plenty of moneyed folks who may not have necessarily got a good job thru campus placement.'
I wish to partially deconstruct this myth by giving a personal example. Well I am 2010 NUJS grad, I got 2 PPOs from law firm in the beginning of my 5th year and in the campus placement I got a job offer from a PSU (one of the best sarkari naukri except may be for UPSC civil service). Yet I decided to take up LLM offer (with full scholarship) from an UK university (with an aim to join academia). And as a caveat I would like to add that I do not come from a 'moneyed' family (I got means cum merit scholarship at NUJS, which greatly helped me to graduate without bank loans).
Thus I find that to categorise every LLM aspirant/student as moneyed good for nothing losers is extremely unfair and serves no equitable purpose.

No quarrel intended and I want to hurt no feelings but look -

- job offers from PSUs are very different from UPSC services. Hardly fair to compare the two. Placement offers from PSUs should not be read as students joining the civil services.

- I correct myself if I gave the impression that all students venturing into academics do it as an option of last resort or are too rich to not be bothered about working on their GPAs to get a job, but nevertheless many did do so and continue to do so. I hate to say this but many of the younger breed of law grads who take to LLMs do it after acknowledging that they may not be able to score too well in the corporate firm rat race. Others are not constrained by financial considerations in applying abroad and prefer to spend a couple of years in the US / UK rather than join the grind in an AMSS (or allen overy). all the same, this lot comprises 5-10% of a batch and to brush them under the carpet as 'academics' is a cover-up. For each such student, there are two others who might equally have done an LLM but have no money and so get into AMSS (say)

One more thing - placement is not about statistics of how many got a job. After having spent so much money in an L-school, a job should be a piece of cake. Question is - what kind of job offers were made ?

- Foreign firms ? What sort ?
- Indian Firms ? What sort ? (Anything below AMSS, AZB, perhaps khaitan ??? should not be counted)
- Companies ? [Anything other than Lever (HLL), or GS or StanChart should be discounted.
- Universities ? [only ivy league and oxbridge please]
- genuine enterpreneurs (and not just joining papa's practice)

And this is what distorts the placement picture

- indian firms such as ARA law, juriscorp, etc.
- companies such as icici bank that trawl in 20-30 grads every year irrespective of pedigree, or mckinsey who don't have a career path for lawyers yet make a big fuss about hiring them
- discount PSUs entirely - who ants to be a law officer at a Bharat Petroleum or a Coal India ?
- universities such as warwick, georgetown, singapore etc who are eager for indian forex

I believe if the stats are cleaned up based on the above, NLS will be a generation or two ahead

Thanks for your clarifications. I completely agree that UPSC CS and PSU jobs are from diff levels in fact in post #73 I clearly said that PSU jobs are best sarkari naukri except for UPSC CS ones. And I must grudgingly admit that your second point may be true in some cases.

Law Firms - ( AMSS, Luthra, Trilegal, AZB, statistics not available for Khaitan for last year )

NUJS - 27
NLS - 18

Foreign Firms( And this is the place where NLS does extremely well)

NLS - 9
NUJS - 3

Statistics are not available for the companies you mentioned

No one from either NLS or NUJS in Ivy League Law schools (Harvad, Colombia, Upenn, Yale, Cornell)

Seems that NUJS is up in the National Placement scene and NLS in foreign placement scene. And only addition of those firms as you pointed out.And I dnt see any reason for NLS being two generations ahead, because no. of foreign placements have decreased this year in NLS, around 5.

If you are discounting PSUs, then NALSAR would be out of the scene. lol :P

Let me also say this - in a good year, when jobs are aplenty, placement gaps between NLS and others tend to be narrower and also distort the picture. A better yardstick for a prospective student and as a measure of a university is how many get premium offers in a BAD year. In such times, the other L-schools suffer a lot more than NLS (which itself had some hiccups), and since there is no way to know for sure whether the year in which you graduate will be good or bad, NLS is more attractive.

Ohffo Senior! Another statement.

What I wanted to say was just that just because you are in NLS, NUJS would not make it easier to get a job. in 2000, law firms, companies didnt have much option but to go to NLS. As the time passed, NALSAR and NUJS came into picture. And now law firms are providing more or less equal placements in these colleges. AS the time would pass, NLUD, GNLU would come into picture. this can be seen from AMSS recruiting 15 students(highest from any law college) from GNLU.

The point is now they have more options, and a topper of Symbi would certainly do better than a person who is at bottom 4-5 spots at NLS, NUJS or any other law colleges, as the case may be.

And, as the time would pass, it would become difficult not only for NLS, but also for NUJS, NALSAR to place their all students at top tier firms and companies. If there is NLS, then why do foreign firms do not include all their students, why do they even visit NUJS, NALSAR, NLUJ. And why Top tier national firms visit GNLU, RML, HNLU when they have NLS, NUJS and NALSAR. The reason is simple, if u can do good at any college, then it wont be difficult for you, else no one can help you whether it is NLS or NUJS or NALSAR

"res ipsa loquitur".

What are the salaries being offered by the top firms to the freshers this year? Can somebody throw some light?

I really try to refrain from joining in the mudslinging but Mr. Res Ipsa's comment about GNLU was just too fallacious to resist.

15 from GNLU? 12-13 from NLS, NUJS, NALSAR?
The difference?
for GNLU it's 15 out of 160 students. For the rest of us, it's the same figure out of 80-90.

Chew on that while you apply to your Gujju PSUs.

@ 89: Indeed I have also heard the same thing. Is it actually true ?? if it is than NUJS shouldn't feel proud of themselves and even shouldn't post something on legally india about other college placement. first form an RCC who has got balls to get firms to recruit so called nujjis...
