HNLU Raipur batch innovates via PPOs to negate location for 75% ‘desk jobs’

HNLU Raipur: Effectively changing the local climate
HNLU Raipur: Effectively changing the local climate
Exclusive: HNLU Raipur has leveraged internships and pre-placement offers to secure corporate and law firm jobs for 36 students of its batch of 48, while four entered litigation at the bar, six studied for judicial services exams and two would go on for foreign LLMs.

Recruitment coordination committee (RCC) member Aditya Kutty said that the locational disadvantage of Raipur was one big problem that this and previous batches had to face, so the RCC this year innovated after feedback from law firms.

“Apart from ‘coming down’ to the campus and picking up students, we had to find certain other ways to attract recruiters,” he explained. “We consciously decided to go the internship route… A few of our seniors had gone to firms and interns, and one of the firms suggested that we do this.”

Only ICICI Bank, Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta Group and legal process outsourcers (LPOs) Pangea3, Bodhi Global and the Clifford Chance captive LPO OSC Export Services visited the HNLU campus directly, explained Kutty, so a a total of 20 out of 36 ‘desk job’ offers came out of PPOs, with students winning jobs in ones and twos at a wide variety of firms.

“Only those firms were contacted which agreed to the possibility of the firm absorbing the student contingent to his/her performance during the period of internship,” added Kutty.

The RCC also faced the problem of the largest recruiters’ having filled up much of their intakes with group hires from the most preferred national law school campuses at a record early time last year – NLSIU Bangalore hosted recruiters in May 2011 who made 15 job offers - whereas HNLU only started in earnest in July or August of 2010, said Kutty.

This was the first HNLU batch that was a full-year batch, rather than two batches split across one year, which made recruitment easier.

Only four students would head to the bar as litigators, said Kutty: one would join the chambers of Dharwad in Karnataka, one those of AS Chandiok in Delhi, one of KK Rai in Delhi, and one student would head to Bilaspur as an independent litigator.

A total of six students were preparing for the Judicial Services Exam via the UPSC.

Two students would pursue LLMs abroad. One secured offers from New York University (NYU) for international business regulation, litigation and arbitration, and a second offer from Oxford University, while another student would take the LLM at Nottingham University.

Last year HNLU placed 39 out of two batches of 98 students.

HNLU’s RCC provided live updates of its recruitments alongside on the Legallypedia rolling law school recruitment tracker Wiki, alongside several other law schools.

Now before someone starts posting stupid comments about it, I must say I am impressed about the hard work HNLU students have been putting in for the past two years !!

in no way am i trying to cast any kind of aspersions but i do have one question the article mention this year hnlu has 48 students, last year it had 98 students, so has the number of students gone down? or did only 48 students sit for recruitment?

@le, if u read article carefully, it clearly mentions that HNLU used to have two batch in one year. So, 98 students are not from one batch but from two batch. Hope it answers your question.

I am a bit confused because 48 students in a batch sounds too low by any nlu standard. in fact the brochure of HNLU at http://clat.ac.in/images/pdf/university_brochures/hnlu.pdf page 4, says that the total intake is around 150+
kianganz 2 Jun 2011, 20:25

I think it must be the permitted maximum batch size by HNLU under BCI rules?

Can anyone confirm. We had double checked the 48 figure as the total 2011 batch size with Mr Kutty. He said that a few students had also dropped out that year, which is why the number was slightly lower than the previous half-yearly batch.
le 2 Jun 2011, 22:41

true true that 155 is the maximum enrolment limit, but 48 is tad too low (in fact less than 1/3rd) compared to the max limit. i am merely raising this fact to make the article clearer and i do not have any intention of getting into any confrontations.

This was the sixth batch of HNLU. In 2006 the maximum limit was 80 students (reason being Make - shift campus), however only 57 students got admitted. 9 out of those 57 students left in between and therefore we were left only with 48 students.
As soon as the university was shifted in the new campus, the strength was first increased to 90 and then 160. So from 2010, the intake is 150+.
I hope this clarifies the entire situation...if there is still any doubt the same can be confirmed from the University office.

Thanks

So, only 57 students joined HNLU? It didn't even fill it's 80 seats. Right? This strenthens the title of my post: HNLU is a failed institution.
Mohit Singh 3 Jun 2011, 07:27

The admissions to the graduating batch took place through the National Entrance Test which was conducted by the NLUs before CLAT had started. Though there were 80 seats only those students could qualify who scored more than 50% in the entrance test (including the reserved category). This is the reason why only 57 students were taken into the Batch VI. Similar is the case with Batch VII and VIII of the University which have the strength of around 60 and 50 respt. The intake of 150 had started only with Batch X.

Their Tier-1 firms are not limited to Amarchand & AZB.

and they didn't have to make innovations cause the firms Did visit their campus.

If you remove LPO recruitments at NLIU the number of students recruited would drop even below 40%. Not that those students did not want a job at a firm, just that no firm visited or recruited them. You talk about quality of students or placements?

great going HNLU. recruitment by niche firms like Platinum Partners makes a bold statement about HNLU's arrival in the big league. And i personally believe that PPOs make much more sense than a campus based interview where so many external factors might play a role in a selection or rejection of a candidate. Internship based recruitment not only gives a clear idea about a students capability to the firm but also provides students with larger time frame to work and impress their prospective recruiter.
I see a future with lots of good law students vying for too few jobs. A good internship shall rule out any law-school based prejudice and ensure that the best gets the best.

@6 as well as the news article clarifies that this batch had only 48 students...can any one please clarify how many students actually sat for recruitments?
Other articles related to recruitment do mention it.
The figures suggest that 6(judicial services) + 2(LLM)+ 4(Lit) = 12, and 36 desk jobs...is it that the 12 student didn't participate in the process and HNLU was able to place the remaining 36 students..if thats the case...well done guys!!

Kudos to HNLU students, seniors, faculty and administration as well.Having worked at AZB i have seen how sound, eager and organized the top brass coming out of HNLU is.Law firms are really bullish about this law school along with Jodhpur.HNLU had some issues in the early part, but after the the infra they've just zoomed up.Shows the value of a good campus. Also, they seem to have a good study culture.Infact ive found few HNLUites better equipped legally than NUJS and NLIU pass-outs.Its sad to see how people try to shun non-metro NLUs.Thats why India is what it is today.Tier II cities are never given a chance to rise to Tier I.Ive been to HNLU once for a confernece and was amazed.New Raipur is coming up really well.Clean and Green.FYI, its only the fourth planned city of India. With IIM Raipur, NIT Raipur, HNLU and others to follow, its going to be a major Education hub of the East.Keep the good work flowing HNLU!!
PS: GNLU is transforming into some Gujju bhai business hub.Why AMSS hire so heavily from there only insiders know. The State Govt is infusing only cash, no quality.Faculty is flagrantly pathetic.Remove the mercenary lure from it and it will come down in a heap. But then thats what Gujarat is known for.All gafla, no substance.

These figures are better than placement figures of NLIU Bhopal. NLIU doesn't have half these firms visiting campus or even recruiting by the way of PPO's. Some of these firms like AZB and Platinum haven't recruited from NLIU this time. Majmudar has never recruited and AZB hasn't picked anyone from 4-5 years. Good going HNLU Raipur. Atleast your leaving one national behind you. It seems NLIU is just dropping down in terms of placements each year rather than picking up like other universities.

Yes the batch strength was 48. Let me briefly put this across for all the curious minds doing the calculations.
HNLU has had 6 batches passing out so far, this one being the sixth. Previously,we had a system of summer and winter intake (yes two entrance tests i.e the individual exams), hence two batches a year. This was also the time when HNLU only had a makeshift campus. So while the first 5 batches had a 6 month difference between them, this batch (6th) had a years gap. Once the new campus came up the intake was increased, which is why the junior batches have a greater strength. I hope that answers someone's query on why the clat hnlu brochure suggest much more student intake.

And that's right, we did have 36 students sitting for placements.

We needn't have any comparisons with any other NLUs or for that matter GNLU. At this point, we can safely say that we treaded our own lil success and remain content with every individual performance during the co-ordination process. That should suffice.

Instead of mud slinging, it would be best to derive the positive outcome of improving recruitment scenes at nascent NLUs.

And since these article series are aimed at law school aspirants- please keep in mind that five years the situate will only get better.

You are trying to hide behind a facade?

So NLSIU and NUJS and NALSAR are 'easy' on academics! They are twice as tough as HNLU. But most people there stay for full 5 years.

It's not like HNLU where half the batch remains in 5th year. Most of these HNLU droppers leave because they see no future in staying there.

75% placements.

36 out of 48 students placed. 7 students in LPOs (pangea-3, bodhi-2, quislex-2). They must be paying 10 thousand rupees to the recruits.

Take out LPOs and this means 29 out of 48 students. This means 60% placements. This is ZILCH.

You know how many good placements are then: 10 out of 48.

Why not go to a local college, stay at your home and get placed in an LPO?

Seems you are new to this field...go first check the facts and stats and then comment. We never boast of Big Law Jobs and I am sure Indian Legal Sector also mentioned by Legally India somewhere can't generate more than 100 jobs offering packages above 10 lakhs. So we actually can't help it but place the students in the LPO's or firms having moderate pay packages. And I guess you should cross check with some one the package of these LPO's.
And yes 36 students participated in the recruitment process and 36 got placed irrespective of the place...so we would take it as 100% placement...I guess the article should have mentioned the number of students participating in the process to avoid such misleading calculations.

You grammar suggest's that you're one of the students who gave CLAT this year.

1. Albeit, faculty might not be all that nice at present, the institution needs some time to recuperate from the problems it has tackled. Rome was not built in a day, nor will this institution. Give it some time.
2. I suggest you find a law school in Ibiza and then perhaps you might find the city 'happening' enough to study law.
3. The infrastructure provides every single thing 'needed' for students to study. Yes, there a lot of things missing but they in no way affect a student's capabilities to study in any manner. It might not have the 'shizz' and the 'bling' and I dont think there is an absolute need.
4. The placement figures suggest quite the contrary. Sure, they might not be as good as some law schools but as stated earlier by Mr. Aditya, there isn't a need for comparison with other law schools. A institution's objective is to compete against itself and outshine itself. Surely, HNLU has achieved this objective this time. Also, looking at this year's performance and presuming that it shall continue, things can only get better.
5. The figures point out a healthy succes percentage. The future will always be bleak for pessimists.

Had the institution been a failed one-
law firms like AZB and AMSS would not recruit;
students could not show such excellence at mooting competitions;
students wouldn't have gone to institutions like Harvard and Oxford.

HNLU has already begun the process of making a niche for itself and in the near future the institution shall reach new zeniths of success. Hardwork, perseverance and success go hand-in-hand.

Not so Stupid, neither so Pessimistic.

The report is a clear picture. The future will always remain bleak for those who are unsure of themselves, the college has nothing to do with this.
Seriously, how insecure can top law schoolites be about their position? To actually have to comment in such a denigrating manner on positive outcomes at other schools. Get a grip! Firstly, isn't that just 7 out of the so many firm placements?
Also, does an LPO not count as a recruitment? Are you telling us the other law schools don't have students going to LPOs? To be fair, thats untrue and I personally know many from top schools at these LPOs. From my bit of experience in this field, your grades do matter to decide, irrespective of your college. From what it appears its not like the front-runners are heading to the LPOs here. Look through the list- there's a Platinum, Udwadia, Vaish and Link Legal as well. These are either well established full firms or upcoming niche ones.

Local colleges in Delhi and in Pune (barring symbiosis) do not even recruit their students, let alone LPOs, my friend.

>>"within few years NUJS students left a mark in every aspect of academics and professionalism"
>>"The fact that NUJS is right in the middle of the city, in quiet yet convenient Salt Lake, made my life easier and happier."
I fail to understand that why does NUJS people think that any new idea can be initiated and nurtured only in NUJS.
Article says: "Fee. Spend as less as possible."
So I guess NUJS should be the least preferred college. You agree?
NUJS always challenges the India Today and Outlook ranking not because they do not follow the correct process but because they are now sick of being at the third position and NLUD already being a threat to even that position.
