DJS exam admits 126 after vivas and written exam

The 2018 Delhi Judicial Services Exam was topped by JGLS Sonepat graduate Shipra Dharkar, with at least 7 other national law schools also being represented in the list of 126.

Delhi University produced at least 8 of the fresh judges, according to a list of names circulating from a coaching centre, which we have in-part confirmed.

GGSIPU has produced at least 7 DJS successes, according to a comment below.

NUJS Kolkata has two graduates on the list, while RMLNLU Lucknow may have four or more.

The candidates succeeded after a written exam and an in-person viva voce, conducted under the auspices of the Delhi high court.

If you know of any other alma mater of those who made the list, please let us know their name, rank and college in the comments and we’ll update.

NLUs emphasise critical thinking and case analysis instead of rote learning, so their students are underrepresented here. But if the paper-setting is modelled on NLU exams, things will change. The NLU Consortium should lobby for this.

I am from NUJS- give credit where due. Intelligence encompasses both reasoning and memorising skills- so papers are fine as they are, if the job of examinations is to find intelligent lawyers with solid grasp of law. That said, the real reason for underrepresentation is that not many NLU grads are keen on judicial service examinations.

By which definition exactly does intelligence encompass memorising skills, pray enlighten us?

Please rectify the list. I think the Apoorv Gupta mentioned in the list is an alumnus of some other university and not NUJS. The one from NUJS has not even appeared for the exam.

Bar & Bench has compiled a list of Lok Sabha candidates with law degrees: many DU and traditional colleges, but zero NLU. This shows that NLU grads prefer elite careers (firms, UPSC, think tanks etc) and not lower judiciary/political jobs. So it is useless trying to compile a list of NLU successes in these sectors.

What is the career of Delhi Judicial Officer like? Why is DJS preferred over other state exams?
Guest 22 May 2019, 15:05

1. Can't be transferred to far off corners of the state.

2. The cases you get are largely more 'urban' permitting you to grow as a person of the legal field.

3. Centrally located allows you to run shoulders with the legal elite, i.e. those above you in the pecking order (including those right at the top).

4. Government job, housing etc. in the national capital. Kids/family lives and grows in a prominent city. Connect to point 1.
