The college’s first entrance exam for undergraduates will be held in 11 centres across India for the first five-year B.A. LL.B. batch on 19 June and will last two hours.

But the subjects that will be examined, the content and the marks distribution have not yet been decided or announced.

NLS & JAA acting registrar Shri R. Hazarika, who is a civil servant on temporary deputation at the college, commented: “We are in the process of finalising the format and other details regarding the entrance exam to be conducted on 19 June.”

“We will be putting up the relevant details on our website in a day or two,” he said.

Hazarika said that he was optimistic about the quality of the newly established institute and the students that would join.

“This university will greatly benefit the people of Assam. We are striving to create one of the best law schools in the country and people from across the country will join this University in Guwahati.”

He argued that because students from across the country joined the IIT and IIMs in Guwahati every year, top students from across the country would also join the Assam national law school.

Hazarika added that the basic infrastructure and facilities for students were ready and the infrastructure would be as “good” as at other national law universities.

Although no faculty was listed on the school’s website at the time of going to press and Hazarika declined to confirm any appointments, he noted that faculty and teachers would be ready by the start of term. Advertisements for faculty are currently posted on the college’s website.

The college will take 60 students, out of which 25 per cent of seats are reserved for Assam-domiciled students. Four seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, while six and three seats respectively are reserved for applicants from Scheduled Tribe (Plain) and Scheduled Tribe (Hills) categories.

Applications have to be received by Monday 6 June and cost Rs 1,000 for general category candidates and Rs 750 for SCT/ST candidates, with a deadline of Monday 6 June. The university’s first B.A. LL.B. programme is scheduled to start on 1 August 2011.
