New Day Zero record: NUJS 4th years bag 40 (!) jobs + 4 foreign gigs (Khaitan biggest)

NUJS Kolkata has set a new Day Zero record, with 40 students having accepted jobs after kicking off its 2016-batch campus recruitments on 17 and 18 April.

A total of 63 students took part in the Day Zero process and scored 27 job offers made after campus interviews, on top of 13 pre-placement offers (PPOs) previously secured by students during internships, according to the college recruitment committee.

Khaitan & Co was the biggest recruiter with 12 accepted jobs, followed by Luthra & Luthra with eight.

Amarchand Mangaldas Mumbai was the third-biggest recruiter with six jobs, while Amarchand Delhi hired four.

AZB & Partners, ICICI Bank, J Sagar Associates (JSA), Talwar Thakore & Associates and Trilegal also picked up students.

Four NUJS 2016 graduates also won vacation schemes at Herbert Smith Freehills and Linklaters, which often have a high chance of turning into high-paying jobs abroad.

The total batch size is 118, of whom more students will sit for recruitments throughout the year.

NLSIU Bangalore’s Day Zero this year yielded 33 jobs and 4 vacation schemes, while NLU Delhi secured 20 jobs and 4 vacation schemes, NLIU Bhopal got around 22 jobs, GNLU Gandhinagar 24 jobs and NLU Jodhpur hauled in 31.

The biggest 2016 recruiter so far is Khaitan & Co, which after picking up a total of 12 NUJS students including three via PPO, has now recruited 42 2016-graduates already, closely followed by Amarchand Mangaldas Mumbai with 38 offered jobs and Luthra & Luthra with 35.

Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi, which is expected to operate independently and in competition to Amarchand Mumbai, has hired 17.

dude. what is wrong with you?
dz is like that ranking system they use (i think it is called super 30). the absolute batch size might be different but it is irrelevant because dz involves the top rankers of each college (roughly the same number of people) competing against each other.
i am inspite of being from nlud willing to graciously concede that this was a phenomenal performance. uour argument is like someone saying that the uk's tally at the beijing olympics was actually better than russia's because russia has a bigger population. The reason such an argument would be stupid is that the absolute size of your population doesn't matter at the olympics because of the level you are performing at, ie only the best of each country are competing against each other (roughly the same number).
kianganz 18 Apr 2015, 17:00
+14 -28
Well, not completely - having a larger population does give an advantage in things such as the Olympics, generally, if coupled with investment, facilities, etc.

And day zero shouldn't really be a competition - it doesn't say that one college's toppers are smarter or whatever and NUJS grads aren't directly competing with NLS etc grads in day zero interviews (though perhaps indirectly).

Statistically it would suggest though that a large college will have a larger absolute number of smart students, if performance in each school is distributed normally.

A college with a large number of students, all other things being equal, should be able to place a larger absolute number of students than a smaller college. However, on top of that it must be considered that there are only so many tier 1 and 2 jobs to go around, so if you need to place 400 on day zero, rather than 40, for instance, that could be impossible.

Our Super 30 is slightly different as it just looks at the top 30 clat ranks in each college, where the pool is the same for all (ie all 1000+ who made it into national law schools).
Regarto 18 Apr 2015, 17:13

@kian : beg to differ with your reasoning. There are SEVERAL other colleges which have a batch size that is equivalent of or significantly larger than what NUJS now has. Should we then compare only them with the placements in NUJS? NUJS - well whether one likes to hear it or not! - has consistently (yes even in the past with smaller batch sizes) outperformed almost every college in placements. Whether that be because of the performance of its alumni in law firms, or locational advantage or for whatever other reasons is a matter of conjecture. Would qualify this though by saying that how many students a college places in top-tier law firms should certainly not be taken as the sole indicator of how good a job the college is doing overall!

Kian- you really can't hide your anti-NUJS bias can you? Students from colleges competing with NUJS have conceded that this is a major victory but you're just coming up with flawed arguments to defend your clearly biased views.

I'd also love to hear of a reason for why I'd have any bias... Are they bribing us? Giving us free lunches? Or is it just a college's general awesomeness that causes me to lose all objectivity?

The students and the CRC/RPC are the same thing. It's all a god-damn student run show. In fact, keeping the admin from pulling down the college is one of the major tasks any NUJS student faces. Like the time they tried to bar students from writing exams because in the interim, the students were busy winning moot courts.

@Kian: There appears to be slight misrepresentation. Out of the 3 offers made by ICICI to this batch (and also to NLIU's batch of 2016), only one from each college is being accepted. so from what appears to be a magical figure, could you please confirm if all of these figures are acceptances? Otherwise, it can be safely assumed that the recruitment committies are fudging numbers.

3 students from NUJS have accepted ICICI's offer. Any information you may have to the contrary is wrong. Please do not try to rain on the parade of a batch and a placement committee, which have worked pretty hard to achieve this!

I am appearing for Clat 2015 and studying real hard. Watching you guys scoring so many high paying jobs is a real motivator. I have a doubt. My family members are from UP and they are insisting me to either opt for RML or at max CNLU or NLUD.

Suppose I am not able to get NLU-D (i saw its placements being great) how are these other two law schools. Family members are saying that all law schools are same NLU's but then I have often come across the Tier word. Does this tier also matter in jobs later on?

This tier does matter in jobs too. Please do choose the tier 1 colleges. Even if jobs is not the best motivator, it should be the indicator of the quality of education you receive.

I dont mean to belittle the tier 2 colleges but they are at a dis-advantage only because they have been started later. However, they are growing faster than any other Tier ! law colleges and would be competing with the Tier 1 colleges very soon. But now its not the case...

Hey...tier does matter. Unfortunately, your parents are completely wrong. While, I am sure all NLUs strive to be excellent in all ways, not all are in the same league.

NLU-D in my experience is excellent. The others in UP or Bihar are best avoided at this moment. You'll be better off going to ILS or Symbiosis.

Try to reason it out with your parents. Ultimately, do what's best for you.

All the best.

CNLU and RMLNLU are no match to NLUD or the rest of these top Law Schools that you've been reading about the Placements of. Of course, I'm saying this only in the sense of Placements, without commenting on the quality of education rendered at the two.
If these Placement figures are your driving force primarily, don't make the blunder of choosing RMLNLU/ CNLU over NLUD or over any other top NLU like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Jodhpur, Bhopal and even Gujarat.
Lord Denning 4 May 2015, 11:38
+1 -0
Go to NLS, NALSAR, NLU-J, NLU-D or NUJS. If you must stretch, stretch to NLIU-Bhopal. If it doesn't happen, take a year off, write the exam again, and go to one of these colleges. That's 6 schools. Not a bad range at all. I'm not aware of Tier I and Tier II. There are only 10 or 20 national law schools - how in god's name are they arriving at tiers ?
That being said, distance is not that big a deal man, (or woman). UP is a train ride from Calcutta, a flight from Hyderabad or Bangalore. Distance is an awful metric to base your decision on - unless it's hometown. It's truly a disastrous metric. Choose on any basis, but please don't choose on the basis of distance from your hometown. My 0.02$.
