NLIU students film first of six-part talk show season with profs

NLIU Bhopal students have shot the first of six episodes in a “season” of a “web series” talk show, which will see a student in a one-on-one interview with a professor “during which students can ask any question from their teacher”, reported The Times of India.

The first episode of the “Professor’s Dialogue” series, which features Prof (Dr) Ghayur Alam, who is dean of undergraduate studies, IPR chair and teaches business laws, will be published on YouTube in November, with future episodes slated to be released until April.

The idea is partly to “promote ‘Brand NLIU’ through social media” and allow aspirants a view at what life at NLIU is like.

FYI such things count in NIRF rankings under perception and community parameters, and also reassure CLAT aspirants that NLIU has a nice campus culture. And NLIU is not tier 2. It is tier 1. If you look at placements, faculty and infra collectively, the score is worthy of tier 1.

Although I would not make a value judgment on the ranking, tone down your voice. Your sentence stinks of butthurt emotions.

None of the NLUs will probably be in any actual believable ranking (THE, QS etc.) for the next fifty years at the very least, even with courses from other disciplines like the MBA (hence not uni-disciplinary) as they are doing now.

Stop with this ranking nonsense and claiming superiority over others. That gives you nothing except the internal satisfaction of bullying the newer ones. Showing each other down is the worst thing for an educational culture.

What makes you think QS or THE are trustworthy rankings? It is all brand and perception which self-perpetuates. Everyone “manages” the rankings. It’s as specious as India’s tom-tommed rise in the “ease of business” rankings.

Well, apart from the fact that THE, QS and Shanghai rankings are now literally in the UGC teaching qualification regulations, it is actually a very good indicator of English-language research. The criticism levelled on THE and QS are because they perpetuate domination of Anglo-Saxon universities and people are compelled to publish in English, not because the rankings are "arbitrary" or "managed".

Take any random university in the rankings, and their research output will inevitably be better than that of any NLU. There is a reason JGLS went in fast into the rankings: they produce excellent research that you can actually see on Google Scholar.

Yeah, they just don't teach. Any NLU teacher has much more teaching and administrative workload than any JGLS teacher on a given day. JGLS has the resources for that, NLUs don't. An undergrad student would rather prefer a faculty member to spend an additional hour explaining to him the fundamental aspects of MFN over the faculty writing a 10000 word paper in a SCOPUS ranked journal.

No, I didn't make that comment. It's possible to have institutional policies geared towards a rise up the ranking ladder, that's true. But overall if a university does that, it should benefit from that in my opinion at least. I'm not referring to the Indian rankings including NIRF. Those are full of holes.

Err...NLIU isn't ranked four among the NLUs. The first four NLUs as per the latest NIRF are NLSIU, NLUD, NALSAR and NUJS respectively. IIT KGP's law school is between NALSAR and NUJS. I do not believe that it's a tier 2 NLU though.

Only a tier 2 college would say that. All of NLS NLIU NALSAR NUJS NLUJ (numbered by age) respect each other a great deal and know the value of each other. Only Tier 2 colleges are jealous of NLIU and NLUJ.

NLIU is a tier 2 law school after Tier 1 like NLS, NALSAR, NUJS, NLUJ and NLUD.

NLIU students are always proactive and trying to improve the college, be it through protests or measures like this. CLAT aspirants are well advised to place NLIU high in the preference list.

Kian, once again, kindly ban all comments which try to give rankings other than NIRF, which is the only official ranking and cannot be questioned. There is an orchestrated campaign to influence CLAT test takers and parents. Any person not recognising NIRF rankings and giving his own must be banned from the site.

These are NIRF scores, not invented scores. NLIU is #4 among NLUs on perception score.

With a huge gap between NLIU and NUJS. They are nowhere even close. The second issue is perception score doesn't actually deal with the merit of the university at all. Considerable part of NLIU's preference to CLAT aspirants come from it having been listed 3rd in order of age. Huge number of people every year mistake that for actual ranking.

Without getting into the debate about NLIU itself, the message you're effectively sending across is that NLIU is perceived to better than it is and that NLUJ is perceived to be not as good but is actually better. Not saying that's true. BUT you do need to think a bit more about the spin you want to give. Will surely help you deal with your clients and judges, if you choose to litigate. Just saying
