NLSIU, BU impose 7pm curfew to 'tighten security'

NLSIU Bangalore students will now have a 7 pm curfew on leaving campus, agreed Bangalore University (BU) authorities and the NLSIU management yesterday.[TOI]

The measure comes in the wake of Saturday’s alleged rape of a second-year NLSIU student by seven to eight unidentified persons in the forest adjoining the law school campus, where she was out with her friend after 10 PM.

NLSIU students have demanded deployment of the police or Central Industrial Security Forces in place of the current private security guards manning the college gates. The bigger IIM and IISc campuses in Bangalore do not enjoy such cover, although those are not next to forest land like NLSIU is. [India Today]

Yesterday Legally India reported on the victim-blaming tone adopted by the police, the media and BU throughout investigations into the incident, after BU threatened to evict NLSIU from its campus.

Typical and very disappointing result. The answer should be to prevent rape and take swift action against rapists, not say that the problem is allowing women out in the big bad world after 7pm. By that logic, why allow students out of campus at all? That would ensure their safety!

Also rather (sadly) amused that the authorities seem to think that rape is a problem after 7pm only.

This is all just a hogwash to deviate from the plot. Because you can't protect your student you have decided to lock them up behind your walls. University should have taken more progressive step instead this draconian move, for instance they should have first banned chowmein in their campus and eventually sought the ban on sale and consumption of such satan-food.

How is it an hogwash on NLSIU's part?Let us stop thinking from a student's perspective and look at it objectively. NLSIU has come under a serious threat of eviction from its tenants BU, who say that its because of the indisciplined students that such an incident has occurred. Bangalore police on the other hand,is taking several steps in improving the security, but making 1200 acres of land totally secure can't happen overnight. Lighting in the area also has to improve. State Government should become more sensitive.
NLSIU campus has good security and this hasn't happened within the University. However as I ve already said, a student's security is dependant on several extraneous happenings. If these are not done, I don't know what PROGRESSIVE step you are expecting from an University which is pushed to the corner for no fault of it's.

what is the big idea behind publishing the victim's details here (academic year in this case)? is it not enough that it was already splashed around everywhere?

This is dumb. There is no such thing happening on campus. It's TOI. Expect TOI quality articles. There is ABSOLUTELY no student movement against the admin right now. No calls for CISF.

This is sickening. Times of India and a few other news agencies have exhibited heights of unethical reporting. Hardly any of their reports represent the true picture. Making it to the top of readership ratings cannot happen by spinning stories like these which bring down top institutions. Hope the Management or the Student body would bring this to the notice of the Press Council.
