NLSIU students set fire in acad block after homophobic vandalism against faculty last year

NLS: Students, faculty, admin distressed

One or several NLSIU Bangalore students allegedly vandalised notice boards on campus allotted to four of the law school’s faculty members.

The incident came within six months of another faculty member’s notice board having been defaced with homophobic writing, allegedly by a law school student.

A source with knowledge of the incident told Legally India that on Monday night students apparently entered the academic block of the law school, wrote offensive messages and set on fire and partially burned down one faculty notice board.

Two very senior faculty members and two faculty members who are NLSIU alumni were targeted by the vandalism. The fire did not spread beyond the noticeboards.

NLSIU visiting faculty Maithreyi Mulupuru, who is also a 2002 graduate of the law school, confirmed in an email that certain faculty offices were vandalised on Sunday night, with the damage having been discovered on Monday morning. “My office was, indeed, one of those affected. Sexist insults were scrawled on the walls of the faculty corridor, outside the doors of certain faculty members.”

“The incident has distressed us at the national law school - students, faculty and administration - deeply. There is a concerted effort being made to find the culprits. I personally have received messages of solidarity and support from across the law school, its students and its alumni,” said Mulupuru.

“I think in every community you have some individuals who end up doing such things, who aren’t very mature,” commented a student who declined to be named, adding: “No one knows who is behind it. There are very few ways of finding out. There are no CCTV cameras in the academic block.”

The student told Legally India that several emails have been sent out on NLSIU students’ common emailing system condemning the incident, and “dozens of messages” on the notice board have requested that the perpetrators come forward and take responsibility instead of shifting the blame on the entire student body.

The student bar council (SBC) had released an internal statement condemning the incident and apologising to the faculty involved.

Sunday’s vandalism follows an October 2013 incident, where one or more persons at the college had scribbled homophobic comments and expletives on the notice board of another faculty member.

A student, commenting on the October incident, said: “He was our professor in first year, and very much loved. We are still trying to understand why [he was targeted]. If some teacher is hated then we can still understand, this teacher is very dear to every student. This could be [due to people’s] tendency to single out people and make them aware that they are different from others. In this law school we are very much for homosexuality.”

“I am sure he was hurt,” added the student, but noted that the faculty member “took it very well”.

NLSIU vice chancellor (VC) Prof R Venkata Rao confirmed the incident and the names of the targeted faculty members, and said: “The administration has initiated measures which clearly send a signal to all that such things will not be tolerated. There will be zero tolerance for such acts. We have an internal mechanism to deal with this. Beyond this I cannot say anything.”

On Tuesday evening the law school’s administration announced that the academic block would shut to students from 10pm, whereas until then it had been open to students as a study space until 3am.

It is understood that in 1999 at NLSIU, a faculty member’s door had also been burnt and remarks had been scribbled on it, and around 2000, mattresses were burnt on a terrace at the college.

This was beyond vandalism, this was misogyny through and through. As we do with homophobia, let's call a spade a spade.

Woah, you do have a seriously sharp mind!

Not only do you defend the indefensible, you even manage to decipher that indecipherable comment!

Pray tell me bruh, are you from NLS, or now that NLS has become another non-NLS, are you from the NLS back when it was still NLS or are you from the NLS after it became non-NLS?

Doesn't matter either way. Your sharp mind suggests you may not have missed out on the chance of studying at NLS by much.

All law schools have some problems. Lets live with it!!..its normal. Some years back, HNLU Raipur SBA took up against the administration demanding the then VC, Prof. Shrivastava to step down. NALSAR/NUJS/GNLU/RMLNLU....all have had issues with their respective admins.

One needs to realise that these are national law schools, places where young men are taught to ask questions, fight for rights, raise voice against injustice....and these outbursts are just examples of how the education is implemented practically.

They should call the police in, interrogate the students and find out who are the culprits. I am sure the police will be able to discover the truth. Then the culprits should be expelled from the law school. That is the correct way to do it. If they don't, then the management is supporting the lack of support for rule of law in this country.

I am shocked to read this. This is not the NLS I knew. The NLS I know,
1. allows different opinions, ideologies and viewpoints to co-exist;
2. recognises clearly that a view exists, only in light of A contrary view and not otherwise.

NLS gave us the space to argue, debate and disagree, but not in this manner. This kind of vandalism does not belong in a civilised culture. This should be condemned in the strongest words.

All is not lost, yet. The people involved in this should show they truly belong to an institution which is different for the crowd of universities and have have courage to come forward and own up. I request them to please come forward and own up and use the opportunity to present their views.

there has always been a lot of hatred in pockets of nls. less so about gay people, but about someone or a handful people in each class, or some idea, some behaviour of some people. and a culture where otherwise intelligent professors like [...] who form "friendships" with selective persons in each class doesn't help either - for the general mental stability all around - given people are very young when they join and it is a closed place faraway from home and even civilization where you just have to live in the whole day.

what is shocking is that the vice chancellor having won a second term (to the surprise of most) is not doing a single thing about it. He's so populist that he won't lift a finger against a student. Its no secret that under his leadership NLS has gone to the pits. Thoroughly disgusted by him.

No, that is certainly not my opinion on this matter. It would be misplaced to blame the administration for such acts of vandalism. My criticisms of the present Vice-Chancellor are centered on academic malpractices and non-consultative decision-making vis-a-vis allocation of teaching responsibilities. I have not said anything against him on matters of student discipline.

as an example of his populism is the incident by which he agreed to a petition by some students to bar [...] from teaching tax law. Which VC do you know acts on such "petitions". When a similar incident of vandalism occurred last year the VC did nothing. He did not so much as write an email to the student body. There was no attempt to bring the offenders to justice and its that attitude that has fostered this kind of behaviour indirectly. Even now after all this the VC has said not a word.

I am sorry, but how exactly do you propose for the VC to lift a finger against it when the perpetrators of the act remain anonymous. Please do not conflate issues, the VC may not be the best thing to happen academically to NLS, but it is unfair to either blame him or the entire student body for the actions of a misguided few. It seems from your comment that you are a student from nls, at least base your opinion on the context and circumstances prevalent before making sweeping declarations.

It seems you are one of those who suck up to the VC all the time. The VC is not only the worst thing to happen to NLS academically, he has also encouraged all the wrong kinds of behaviour and led to a decline in moral standards. Its a well known fact that he chose to do nothing when there were vandalism targetted against Kunal sir last year, despite some suspects who were well known to all. If he had acted sternly then none of this would have taken place. He is so busy trying to endear himself to a bunch of sycophants that discipline takes a back seat.
Current NLS Student 17 Apr 2014, 13:43

First, stop shooting your mouth off without giving thought to reason. My appeal to locate the situation in its context is hardly reeking of "sucking up". If you view a requirement for context as unreasonable, you have clearly learned nothing from your history courses. But since you have referred to "Kunal sir", I take it you are yet to complete a history course, and are too young to understand that a knee-jerk reaction is often the worst sort.
As you well know, if you are indeed an NLS student, the administration has undertaken procedure to take action.
Second, moral standards? No institution can ever lay claim to "moral" standards. Nobody can enforce "correct kinds of behaviour", that is just being autocratic.
Even the homophobic incident that occurred, you cannot take action unless you know FOR SURE the identity(s) of the perpetrator(s). It is a very serious matter to institute disciplinary proceedings against someone, both from the viewpoint of the university, and that of the student. (If you wrongly punish a student as a result of disciplinary proceedings, you open yourself up to civil liability.)
Last, pray tell what impetus the VC has to suck up to his own sycophants when he has already been granted a second term to last at least another 5 years?
As you spend more time in our "hallowed" institution, you will find things are never as clear cut as they seem.

Tragic, I must say. Quite uncool. One can only hope that the culprits are adequately penalized.

Also, we must remember that such cowardly acts of a few in a community are not indicative of the general attitude of the community as a whole. It's unfair to judge a college, or its student culture by the acts of a few rogue students.

Also, any news on recruitment? I hear NLS has done a fine job this time around, vandalism and misogyny notwithstanding. :P

I agree with you. Some students did it, but that really doesn't mean that the entire college subscribes to this attitude. I hope whoever did this act of vandalism reflecting misogyny is suitably punished.

Yes but when incidents like these are reported in other universities, the general reputation is that the university is brought down and its that it sucks! - mostly coming from NLS snobs.

This incident shows that all are at equal footing, all have good/bad teachers, all have smart/ rowdy students/fags,etc except NLS has a 20+ years of alumni!

It's high time to have a re-look at the National Law School System. With NLS, NALSAR and Jindal going for non-law programmes, Menon model of a 'solo discipline' University needs serious rethinking. How is it that JNU without even a School of Law or Department of Law has contributed much more than all the law schools combined???
Kids coming straight out of school with no understanding of what a university atnds for and fed with the impression that they are the best in the world are supposed to act this way only.

so now the admin is quoting sections from IPC and threatening students with police action and imprisonment unless they confess. How typical of Indian universities to react in this blockheaded manner that will only cause students to either stick together or take delight in repeating the act by making a us v them scenario. The VC has still not bothered to address the students and sends these "updates" through his minions, not having the courage to do it himself. Worse and worse....
