20 BigLaw jobs & 4 foreign internships in the bag for NLU Delhi 4th years after early Day Zero

NLU Delhi: Flying start to 2016 job scene
NLU Delhi: Flying start to 2016 job scene

NLU Delhi’s 2016 graduating batch has bagged 20 jobs from nearly all of India’s top firms after holding one of the first recruitment interview days out of all national law schools.

A total of eight firms’ offices made offers (see table below), with Khaitan & Co hiring the most with a total of six graduates accepting, including one pre-placement offer (PPO) to a student following an earlier internship. Luthra & Luthra and Trilegal respectively received four and three acceptances.

Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi and Mumbai regions each recruiting one student on Day Zero, and Delhi having made made one additional PPO.

AZB & Partners and Talwar Thakore and Associates also participated in Day Zero, while S&R Associates had already made one PPO.

A total of 45 students out of a batch of 72 batch are participating in the recruitment committee activities for 2016; 26 offers were made on Day Zero, with 16 acceptances.

Students have also bagged four coveted foreign law firm vacation scheme internships abroad, which often convert into jobs after graduation.

Linklaters has offered two vacation schemes, while Allen & Overy and Herbert Smith Freehills have each offered one internship.

One RCC member commented: “Obviously the relationship that our seniors have developed with firms have helped, but we have also been reaching out to new firms and corporations.

“Some firms have come for the first time to our college, like AZB & Partners, Talwar Thakore and Amarchand Mumbai.”

This batch’s Day Zero performance managed to double the performance of the college’s previous and third batch, which saw 10 accepted jobs in its 2014 Day Zero on 4 April.

The RCC members, consisting of Parul Sharma, Anuradha Godrey, Aroon Menon, Utkarsh Srivastava, Vaishali Singh, Kanwar Vivswan and Bharat Gupta, said in a joint statement:

We would like to thank our Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Faculty members and all our seniors, whose support and guidance have helped make the process a phenomenal success. That in a short span of time, the University has achieved such great success, is a result of the quality of education and diverse opportunities that the University provides. We are excited for the future placements as many recruiters have shown interest in participating in our recruitment process and we hope to secure placements for each of our members.

Stop shitting your pants about JSA not confirming for NLUD. They have refused to go to NLS Bangalore as well. For the past 2 consecutive years. Does that make NLS a loser law school? No. They are still top of their game.

JSA goes wherever it wants to and makes limited number of campus placements. As a policy, they hire more people via their interns. They went last year to NLUD and didn't go this year. Big deal!

Stop trying to sensationalize stuff unnecessarily.

Punching holes in your 'great achievement' of recruiting a 'record breaking 20 students' is NOT sensationalization of stuff. JSA has recruited from NLSIU in the past and will do even this year. If you are not interested, then don't comment. The moment you comment here, it shows that you are definitely interested in the rivalry. 'A little surprise' doesn't really warrant a comment.

Secondly, Anon didn't say that JSA recruits from NLUD via interns, he/she just said that they recruit through their interns. So whether they come for day zero or not, is not a reason to diss whatever NLUD has achieved. It may not be as good as some others, it may not be as good as YOU would expect, but it's good enough for them.

So just let them be.

We believe Legally India stories, right?

JSA recruits through interns, you said? NO. A BIG NO. Read this, where LI reports how JSA rejigged its policy to put more emphasis on campus placements than PPOs

And what if I say I don't believe Kian and LI blindly and take every news with a pinch of salt? And that I have information about JSA policy from the partners themselves? Then can I continue arguing?

JSA recruits through day zero. Agreed. But its majority recruitment still happens through interns. You can go count the number of 2014 graduates working at JSA - and ask them for yourself how many of them got recruited through day zero and how many through interns.

And if you can't or don't wish to verify that, then please stop arguing yourself.
kianganz 3 Apr 2015, 14:04
+1 -7
That's exactly what the linked to article says. JSA did campus interviews for the first time in 2009, and only in small number.

I believe they've been ramping up a bit, to stay competitive, but if you compare to other big six firms, JSA recruits a lot fewer from campus directly than others, and still puts significant weight into internship / articles recruitments.

This spreadsheet doesn't tunnel down into PPO / non-PPO, but JSA only hired 9 from NLSes last year ( http://www.legallyindia.com/images/2013-14%20law%20school%20rankings%20raw%20data.xls from here: http://www.legallyindia.com/201410315253/Law-schools/law-schools-recruitment-power-rankings-2013-14 ) - by contrast the other big firms did a lot more.

Stands to reason JSA recruits a lot of its intake still from GLC, and maybe also DU and the like, as well as ILS, Symbi, etc...

If interested, do look through our previous year's recruitment coverage, and where it's broken down by PPO / direct recruitment, JSA will be leaning more strongly towards PPO.

JSA has recruited no one from Symbi and ILS since last 3 years. The point being, that JSA has the lowest attrition rate. We don't hire crazily like AMSS, Trilegal or Khaitan. People are happy, and really don't want to leave us.

Yes, we hired 9 from NLSs last year through Day 0, and about a total of 12 recruits will be joining us this year. So, just 3 final years have been hired from non NLSs.

Request you, Kian, not to make wild guesses, such as above. Get your facts right, please.

This current batch who is passing out? 4 AZB jobs with 2 more in the pipeline - final interview stage, 2 AMSS jobs, 4 Khaitan jobs, 3 Luthra jobs, 1 SNR job, 1 JSA job, 2 Trilegal jobs. - That's at least 18 jobs in the big law firms, along with 3 foreign law firm TCs.

And as you can see, 2016 batch has 20 jobs and 4 Vacschemes by April 1, when they graduate June 2016.

We have to be happy! We never have more than 45 people who want jobs, out of 75 students cause people prefer LLMs or policy work, or chamber lit. We have such an active campus culture and not a hardcore corpenvironment.

Pliss to acknowledge half the batch gets fancy placements at big-law firms and it has been steadily improving.

Guest 3 Apr 2015, 08:08

We're 2 graduates old. Let us give this college some slack and our seniors graduated in the worst market ever. They're second year associates.

We do have good students, great faculty, a campus culture the last 1 year where we engage in discussions and deliberations and we're doing well as a college. Our performances in debates (winning NLS-D thrice), moots - winning redcross world, ICC, manlachs worlds etc, involvement in research projects like Death Penalty, admissions into Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Cambridge for our students all are inspiring. We are happy to be challenging the big guns in a small way. When our college is around 12 years old, we see ourselves challenging the big guns in all aspects. Or being a big gun. =)

Can we not do the "publicity stunt" thing. With some of the best faculty, best campus culture and great students we're happy. And we have the right to be!

Also when 24 out of the 45 people have jobs or foreign vac schemes, we thing it is a pretty good thing. More people have been offered assemsment internships at Big Law firms and further, Day 1 is always successful.

The current final year batch? We had 10 confirmed big law firm offers by day 0 including PPOs. In this one year we have had 3 accepted Luthra jobs, 4 accepted AZB jobs, 1 accepted Khaitan job, 1 accepted SNR job, 3 foreign accepted TCs and AZB is still processing 2 more jobs - along with placements in many other law firms and in-house areas like Wipro, TATA, ICICI, Star, Sahara among others.

Likewise the 2016 batch has time till June 2016 to place the rest. People who want jobs will get jobs. We think that's very successful for a college this young.

We don't need to "grow up". We'll celebrate like Ireland does at its wins, because we're fledging and we can only improve. :*

PS. 2016 batch - 16 accepted jobs on Day Zero in NLUD. NLS - 20 accepted day zero jobs. Of course we're happy! :D

the NLUJ Batches of 2015 and 2014 can be counted among the shittiest to have ever graduated from the University. I understand your sentiment when you state that NLUJ has had bad placements. This can largely be attributed to the nepotism of one professor who handled the placement cell. Now that he is gone and students handle placements, we have seen a phenomenal increase in job prospects. This is evidenced by Batch of 2016 getting 13 PPOs from Tier I firms in the country.

NLUD is the best law school overall. If you look at the main criteria like infrastructure, quality of faculty , placements, campus location and student quality, it is the only law school that will get high scores in all these categories. Other law schools will get lop sided marks, e.g. NLSIU, NALSAR and NUJS will score high on placements (maybe even more than NLUD) and in student quality, but not in other categories; some of the new NLUs have great infrastructure but terribly faculty; Jindal may possibly have the best faculty but bad students.

Kian Sir and Prachi Ma'am, I would request you to please do a ranking of all law schools so that a neutral voice can verify this. This is especially important as CLAT is coming up.

NLUD, 3rd day zero ever - 16 people placed on day zero.

NLS - around since 1987 - 20 people placed on day zero.

Sweetie, we're the underdogs. Getting 16 people placed on day zero when NLS got 20 people placed is a huge thing. Also, um, why does total number of offers matter? People with jobs matter. Does it matter if NLS's top 5 ranks get some 7 offers each? =D Unlike NLUD who tries to maximise jobs, minimise clashes by ensuring a cap on the number of firms people can apply to.

Our alumni are 2nd year associates. In fact we don't have any alumni in JSA, Khaitan Bombay, Trilegal Bombay and AZB Mumbai. Think about all these disabilities. Please not CNLU, NLUO and other new law schools opened around the same time as us, or earlier as in the case of RML etc struggling for placements. For batch of 2016 to get 20 biglawjobs and 4 foreign firms for a "we want jobs" size of 45 students and overall batch strength of 75 students is insane.

We are not saying we are NLSIU. We're just saying, maybe we don't need to be around since 1987 with partners in every major firm to notch up um, 20 accepted offers on day zero. We can do 16 without that only. =)

But yay, congratulations! I am sure you're happy and all. Good job! Most of us are in NLUD cause we could not get into NLS. Seeing crappy, competitive comments like this makes us regret it less. :D

Being around from 1987 we still have only 80 students at the time of intake. So age of the institution has nothing to do about it. Not having alumni is not a great disability especially with the faculty you now have, you should really be gaining your jobs on merit.

Peace out sab log, we're bhai-behen in this NLU game and may we all get the employment we deserve. ^_^

Which is exactly why NLUD is doing decently right? If Ireland does well in the WCs no one is going to go "BUT THEY CAN NEVER BEAT AUS". We're 2 graduates old. Let us give this college some slack. We have the same batch intake as well, and our seniors graduated in the worst market ever.

We do have good students, great faculty, a campus culture the last 1 year where we engage in discussions and deliberations and we're doing well as a college. Our performances in debates (winning NLS-D thrice), moots, involvement in research projects like Death Penalty, admissions into Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Cambridge for our students all are inspiring. We are happy to be challenging the big guns in a small way. Much like Ireland cricket team. When our college is around 12 years old, we see ourselves challenging the big guns in all aspects. Or being a big gun. =)

Can we not do the "publicity stunt" thing. With some of the best faculty, best campus culture and great students we're happy. And we have the right to be!

Not really, Kian. Any recruitment analysis has to be comparative. With so much publicity that NLUD swears by, just take a look at other law schools' figures. We have had 13-16 PPOs already. I repeat, just PPOs. You can even confirm by your sources at top tier law schools.

And just like you said it, we still gotta have our Day Zero in the coming days. Simple maths suggests: 13-16 PPOs+Day Zero jobs >>>NLU-D Final Day Zero figures.

This is publicity, generated by NLUD. Period. They really need to look at other biggies with whom they claim to compete.
kianganz 5 Apr 2015, 07:17

Excuse me - which college are you at that's had 13-16 PPOs already?

When NLU Delhi:

1. shares the facts of its Day Zero,
2. has better Day Zero than it had in any batch ever,
3. had the first Day Zero out of all the NLSes,
4. performed pretty well on Day Zero, even when compared to the 'best' and 'oldest' NLS of them all,

then that's good news for NLU Delhi, there's no other way to look at it.

No one is claiming that NLU Delhi is the best law school in the country - neither LI, nor NLU Delhi's RCC - but the fact of the matter is that they're making strong headway into the top 3. and performing very well on issues such as recruitment, faculty and general student performance in such areas as mooting.

Period?

Kian, we are from the Batch of 2016, NUJS. 16 PPOs. I repeat, 16 PPOs.The same number as NLU Delhi's FINAL day zero figures.

And you say, NLU Delhi is making a strong headway into the top 3. Not really. Don't be biased, Kian.

NUJS. Naam toh suna hi hoga, Kian?
kianganz 5 Apr 2015, 08:40
+3 -3
Well done NUJS in that case! :)

What's your batch size though? 120 or so at the moment? Bigger numbers will obviously help a bit with absolute PPO figures... And NLS, for example, had 'only' 13 PPOs, if that's your sole metric.

Point is that when looking at trends, NLU Delhi will soon perform (or is arguably already performing) at-par in recruitments with the top 3 or top 5, give or take some.

The point is that as an individual student, if you're good, etc, the differences in job opportunity at each of these colleges are pretty equivalent. If you want an Amarchand job, for instance, you're likely to be able to get that at either of these colleges.

Have a look at our 'recruitment power ranking', for instance, for an indication of how well the average student in a law schools' batch can get a BigLaw job:
http://www.legallyindia.com/201410315253/Law-schools/law-schools-recruitment-power-rankings-2013-14

NLU D is ranked on-par with NUJS there. But again, these numbers aren't gospel, but they give a decent indication of what's actually going on, and the reality seems to be, the differences are already marginal...
Reply to Kian 5 Apr 2015, 09:18

Kian, it is really unfortunate that you were arguing all through, without the right knowledge there about NUJS' PPOs. We thought you would had the numbers already, but your research this time disappointed us.

Which is why, we say, that NLU Delhi has still a lot of spade work to do. It's still a baby in front of the Top 3.

We do hope that you 'report' news. Not biased news in favor of NLU-Delhi. We can understand that you are apparently 'awed' by NLU-Delhi, but that does not mean that you start 'manufacturing' bias in favor of NLU-Delhi.

Request you to keep yourself more updated and then argue. Please do justice to your job by not manufacturing news. Arnab Goswami isn't really liked by many, if he's your hero in that case.

How can you blame someone else for their lack of research when you are not ready to disclose facts about your own college? A couple of comments before this is the first time that it was mentioned 13-16 PPOs at NUJS - before that you just kept saying 13-16 PPOs without mentioning which college.

You can't call it biased journalism when one of the parties is ready to disclose their figures and the other party isn't.

If there is any bias being 'manufactured' by anyone here, it's you. It's the lack of disclosure from NUJS that has led to this apparent manufactured bias. Don't blame LI or NLU Delhi for that.
Relax, Kian! 5 Apr 2015, 09:30

Kian, don't even mention that 'recruitment power ranking', which was lambasted by almost everyone here.

C'mon Kian, don't be THAT biased. If I remember correctly, you even had the temerity to equate AMSS associates with TSG ones, LLMs with LPOs, and what not! For more, it would be wise enough to visit your own story's comments, www.legallyindia.com/201410315253/Law-schools/law-schools-recruitment-power-rankings-2013-14. Do favor to yourself, Kian.

Finally, after bungling figures, you discovered that NLU-D is catching up with Top 3.

Eureka, Kian? No.
kianganz 5 Apr 2015, 09:49
+2 -4
People cribbed, but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the recruitment power rankings, if we are having a 'contest' of who can bag the most Big Six and other high-paying job offers, which disadvantages every one of these law schools similarly.

I accept that the main problem with that power ranking is that it doesn't place enough 'value' in LLMs and non-BigLaw related careers, but NLU D suffered as much from that metric as NLS or anyone else.

No ranking is perfect but I don't think that majority of other 'criticisms' in the comments to that story are valid or have been supported by enough evidence.

The LPOs that are ranked highly, pay well or better than litigation and many law firm jobs, and getting a high-paying LPO job is not that easy.

As for AMSS and their TSG (transactional support group) - do you know the figures? I believe there's no transparency on that at present, so we have to work with the data that's available. Is there any difference in pay or how they recruit from campus for that group? Did everyone from NLU Delhi get 'shunted' into TSG?

Anyway, it's a bit of a pointless discussion. Rather than going on the attack, give some simple examples, why NLU Delhi is performing as poorly as you claim it is. Top law firms seem to be happily and repeatedly recruiting from NLU Delhi without complaints, they're consistently bagging good LLMs and foreign law firm jobs (arguably the toughest to get), have pretty good faculty (often with top NLU undergrad degrees and foreign LLMs), perform pretty fantastically at moots, have the locational advantage of being based in Delhi, and a very pragmatic VC.

The biggest criticism of NLU Delhi is that they still insist on being outside the CLAT, which has given them an unfair advantage over other new law schools though it's a shrewd (if potentially, legally dubious) move by its VC.

At the end of the day, I have no horse in this race and don't give a rat's arse which national law school is best.

But from where I stand, admittedly as an outsider but also as an impartial one, much of the evidence and figures point to NLU Delhi being a strong contender for at least the top 5 NLSes already.

Prove me wrong on each of the above facts with convincing data or arguments, if you can, and I'll be happy to revise my opinion.
Reply to Kian 5 Apr 2015, 10:04

Don't lie, Kian, that you don't have horse in the race or that you don't give a rat's arse.

You have a major horse in the race, the one which produces or rather 'manufactures' more hits on your website!

By coming up with a potentially wrong scandalous rankings and opinions, you ensure that students get enraged. Even more, what about those CLAT aspirants, who believe every word of this website? You really need to revise your lessons about the concept of 'public interest'.

Misguiding people serves against public interest. No matter how much freedom you have to commercialize this website, you really do not have the liberty to manufacture wrong news, misguide Indian law students and serve against public interest. Don't do this for some extra hits or a pack of extra bucks. This is appalling reporting, Kian.
kianganz 5 Apr 2015, 10:11
+2 -5
I lol'd again.

Truth of the matter is, whatever we publish on law school performance would get hits. If we published data that NLU Delhi was doing poorly, NLU Delhi would outrage and others would gloat; if we publish data that NLU Delhi is doing great, others would similarly outrage. Fact is, we don't have to manufacture any outrage, because people like you will simply outrage regardless of facts. :)

Also, not that it should matter, but none of our advertisers pay us on the basis of our hits (and our rates have remained the same in past years despite hits increasing), so whatever horse I have in this race must be a very lame one...

That said, my dear friend, answer my question please or I'm done with this frankly ridiculous discussion:
Prove me wrong on each of the above facts with convincing data or arguments, if you can, and I'll be happy to revise my opinion.
Or, if that is beyond you (as it clearly seems to be), please find a single word in the article above that is inaccurate or giving a wrong impression to aspirants or anyone else.

Kindly answer the following questions:

1. What is your total batch size and what is your recruitment batch size? (NLUD's is 73 and 45 respectively)
2. How many batches have graduated from your university? (NLUD has had only two batches that has graduated)

Are you honestly so thick that you don't see the advantage of having alumni crawling across most offices and courts? You say NLUD isn't really making a strong headway into the top three - based on what???
What is more pathetic is that NUJS has been around for over a decade and it still isn't ever, even in passing, considered the best. Nor does anyone ever predict that NUJS will be the best. Really, what NLUD does or doesn't do shouldn't be your concern. If you think we're babies then don't spend your time abusing them dadu, it is very unbecoming. Like your acad block, your reputation continues to crumble and here you are squabbling with Kian. It's about time you did some damage control. You should conduct a survey as to how many in NLUD have rejected NUJS. In fact you should grateful towards the students sitting there cuz its more than likely you're in NUJS because they didn't want to be.

Why dont you look at it the other way around... How many kids got into both NLUD and NUJS and decided to stick with NUJS. Plus, you also have to take into account the fact that people at times pick colleges based on their preferences for or against a particular city. So it doesn't mean much as far the quality of students/ colleges go if a few freshers decided to pick NLUD over NUJS. I am sure they have their own reasons, quite apart from speculation that a fledgling law school would be better than what is commonly accepted as a Tier I law school in the industry. I say that because NUJS alumni practically staffs half of big law firms in Bombay (KCo & AMSS) and Delhi to an extent. Also, please don't patronize kids from my college by saying that they are sitting in NUJS right now because a couple of kids in NLU D claim to have rejected NUJS over NLU D. Most of them are very bright in their own right and are brimming with potential.

Having said this, congratulations guys for a great day zero! But please refrain from heralding your college as the next best thing to happen to legal education since the Socratic method! For placing 20 freshers does not really make an institution. Given the attrition rate, why don't you wait for your alumni to aggregate to a sizable number in the industry and prove their worth, before saying that your college is indisputably better than any other XYZ college.

Also, please, avoid NUJS in your glorious mud fest for supremacy. It is unpleasant to have such presumptuous judgments of quality from kids sitting in their hostel rooms.

NLS had a better Day Zero - Accepted. How does that take anything away from NLUD's Day Zero? It is really good performance, and people have a right to celebrate it. As for this being a publicity stunt, I find you even considering the idea really stupid. Day Zero figures are posted for every major Law School, not just NLUD. NLUD's was posted first only because they had their Day Zero first. Giving it to LI, as rightly stated, it just Transparency. And maybe if people at NLS stopped worrying about NLUD making a name for itself, and being compared (by ANYONE, not just people at NLUD) with them, and started focusing on the changes needed even in their University (nobody can be perfect), it'd be good for all. NLUD should do the same. NLUD has its flaws, and so does NLS. Let's all try and make ourselves better for the betterment of the legal system of the country. And not waste time pointing at each other's flaws. In the end, people getting jobs is a good thing for everyone. Everyone has worked hard for these jobs, and we should celebrate them. Thank you.

I acknowledge that faculty quality plays an important role and NLUD has got many alumni of NLUs in the faculty. I will even concede that NLUD faculty is better than NLSIU and NALSAR. But ultimately a university's success is shaped by quality of students. This is where NLUD lags. There are also rumours of students getting in through influence. Also if you only look at faculty then a college like Jindal (with CLAT rejects) will score highest, LOL.

Has it ever happened that the AILET topper has decided to study at NLUD instead of going to NLS ? :p

Really, three people got in to NLS and picked NLU Delhi? (I hope you're excluding anyone who topped AILET and did not get into NLS from your analysis)

Can you name these people, or refer me to the batches in which this happened?

I cannot believe the sheer amount of venom being spewed at NLUD. Seriously, these kids need to go and talk to their own university's third or fourth graduating batch and attempt to understand how big an achievement this is. If i'm not wrong NLS's fourth batch graduated in 1996. 1996! That's a difference of two decades and they have what? 10 jobs more? I mean their alumni are designated Seniors and partners at firms across the world and they're honestly jumping about having 10 jobs more than a uni that is 20 years younger?!

If these kids are indeed so hateful towards NLUD then they shouldn't be wasting their time belittling them but rather be spending time ensuring that they retain their position because if one had to go by NLUD's track record then I just can't wait to see how things stand in 20 years.

Mr. Observation, do you realize how the market has expanded since 1996? Then, how the hell can we compare as to what happened in 1996 at NLS' day 0 and NLUD's day zero in 2015?

Your observations are really devoid of logic.

[...] 33 jobs at NLS. Remember that. Always. Before you write a word here.

The point that was being made is that NLS has had 20 years to make its presence felt at various places. So yes while the market is wider now, the problem NLUD faces is that it doesn't get to tap into that market because nobody really knows about it as such while colleges like NLS benefit from their alumni. NLUD is forced to compete with established universities and is doing a fantastic job. Point was that NLS (and others) should have a wider margin that it does. The fact that it doesn't should definitely worry the current and future lot of students.

Kya samjhe?

Suno NLS walo. I respected your university. However, now I am quite disgusted with the behaviour of some of you, which makes me question your whole institution. I promise you, I will work tirelessly to ensure that NLUD rises above NLS. One day. One step at a time. That is my promise.

Kudos to NLS and NLUD for the amazing placement scenes! NLUO trying real hard despite all odds (frequent VC changes, location problems, 5 year old law school etc). Showed some mettle in the MPL this year. Hoping to achieve atleast a decent placement for the 2016 batch.

I am writing CLAT and AILET and NLS will be always my first choice even if I get through NLU D. Try to retain AILET topper first and then challenge the legacy of NLSIU.

JSA not visiting NALSAR and NUJS for day Zero? Are you serious?

Though, I personally know a co-intern from NUJS who has been given out a PPO at JSA, Bangalore.

PPOs might have been given out. I'm not denying or discounting that. And that's a good thing for those who have got the PPOs. Just something I got to know today, so I thought I'd share it with everyone. Apparently it's a last minute decision to not visit these campuses (because I think JSA had earlier confirmed visiting them).

Ok, have checked with JSA and this seems to be utter rubbish.

According to an authoritative JSA source, the firm was still intending to go for Nalsar and NUJS day zero.

Nicely trolled guys...

Why are there so many NLU Delhi haters on this page?
The following line from the movie Guru gives the answer -
"Jab log tumhare khilaf bolne lage toh samajh lo tarakki kar rahe ho."

Keep up the good work NLU Delhi!
