NLU Jodhpur 2020 campus recruitments: 36 top-pay law firm jobs led by L&L, Tri, CAM, KCo as 61% of batch goes corp via RCC

NLU Jodhpur’s batch graduating last year, in 2020, has released its job placement figures for the 60 students who directly participated in the Recruitment and Internship Coordination Committee (RICC) activities.

Five of the highest-paying law firms proved to be the heaviest recruiters, with a total of 36 offers.

A total of 35 job offers were secured on Day Zero early recruitments with eight law firms, held on 2 April 2019, which we had reported on at the time.

The numbers are in a similar and consistent range to previous years’ campus recruitments at NLU Jodhpur.

The highest-paying tally was led by L&L Partners and Trilegal each picking up eight NLU Jodhpur 2020 grads.

Around half of each of these hires had taken place via pre-placement offers (PPOs) - see the full table below.

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas made a total of seven accepted job offers while Khaitan & Co hired six.

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and AZB & Partners hired six and four students each.

15 other job offers were accepted at domestic firms.

Three graduates accepted jobs in London at Herbert Smith Freehills and Linklaters (we have double checked with the RICC whether those positions are all training contracts or also include internship-style vacation schemes and will update this article as soon as they confirm; back in 2019, they had been vacation schemes).

In-house corporate jobs were fewer in numbers, with only two each opting for ICICI Bank, Tata Power and the Universal Sompo General Insurance Co (plus one job at the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India).

Further education, including LLMs, as well as litigation jobs were not procured via the RICC and therefore not tallied.

“The class of 2020 comprises of 101 students, out of which 60 students had subscribed for recruitment through the RICC and a few other students had obtained recruitment through their own efforts,” said the RICC in a statement.

“The remaining students from the batch of 2020 decided to pursue litigation, civil examinations and higher studies,” the committee said.

The RICC also added:

The success of the recruitment process has to be attributed to the University’s Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Poonam Saxena and Dr. Manoj Kumar Singh, Director of the Recruitment and Internship Co-ordination Committee. Additionally, we also thank the participating firms and organizations for the continued support extended to us. We wish the Batch of 2020 all the best for their future endeavors.

NUJS had recently also revealed its 2019-20 recruitments, which included at least 64 jobs in the highest law firm pay-bracket.

Nuals Kochi has also shared its 2020 recruitments to date, with 32 accounted-for career options for an RCC of 65.

NLUJ's tier 1 offers are 38 only. Significantly less than NUJS which had around 60 Tier 1 offers. Even lesser than GNLU which had around 49 tier 1 offers.

What’s the batch size for each college? You’ll find your answer there. Thanks ok bye

Batch size doesn't matter. What matters is how many students opted for placements. I am sure the % is better in both these colleges as compared to NLUJ. Just for your information NUJS 2020 batch size was 120 only. They have increased later.

A moment of silence for those going to Luthra. It is not their fault. I hope the firm remains by the time their joining date arrives.

Very good placements and will help retain the position in NIRF. The long-term goal of NLUJ has to be to enter the top 3 and if not then at least stay at the # 4 NLU.

The short term goal at least has to be to ensure that its students remain physically and mentally sound in order to take the university to any level, next or otherwise. If you cannot or will not invest in your students' well-being, then you will not only ever become an institution of repute, but you would have failed your actual purpose. The students aren't there for the university's sake, it's the other way around.

More foreign offers than NUJS and NLUD?
Guest 27 Apr 2021, 06:06

For less than 2% of the batch. For the domestic offers, which account for 90% plus students who actually sit for placement, far less offers than NUJS or even GNLU.

TCs abroad are the gold medals of placements and the NLU that has the most TCs must be considered to have the best placements. IMO it's like the Olympics where 3 golds and 1 bronze medal is ranked higher than 0 gold and 10 bronze medals. Thus, NLUJ must be ranked ahead of NUJS in placements and the NIRF lead should be maintained. If NLUD had fewer TCs, then the NIRF top 3 must change to NLSIU>NALSAR>NLUJ.

Not anymore. Most lawyers prefer to come back to India after a couple of years these days. Because of the increasing expenses (London in particular) and tax liability in the UK, equally placed firm lawyers in India are actually better off financially. I myself came back after spending a couple of years in a Magic Circle firm. The brief exposure does one good though.

I know at least one person from an NLU 2022 batch (actually my friend) who has declined the offer of a TC. You might not be aware but The process of conversion of Indian law degree into UK's has been changed recently. Now, it involves 2 years of a preparation course (and 2 exams- PGDL and SQE) followed by 2 years of Training Contract before you become an associate. He was wise enough to choose an Indian law firm rather than spending 4 years after graduation.

Mind you, during the first 2 years the firm will just sponsor your course and education. Most of the living expenses will have to be borne by you. For the next 2 years of TC, you will be paid just enough to live. After you become an associate you will be paid well.

Compare this with Indian scenario, after 4 years this guy will be a Senior associate earning much more than his peers at Magic Circle law firm along with a higher position.

TCs used to be gold standard placements earlier, but not anymore. Many students still don't know this, You will see very few students applying for Vacation scehemes after 2-3 years from now.

NLSIU had very few TCs for the 2020 batch. Are you sure you don't want NLUJ to claim the first spot on NIRF?

Your opinion does not count. This is not a podium finish. Indian law firms obviously prefer to hire more from NUJS than NLUJ. Foreign law firm hires are so few in number that on their sole basis, no institutional perception can be formed anyway.

More TCs = higher average package and higher maximum package = better NIRF stats = NUJS meltdown.

Really looking forward to NIRF.

It is clear that you have lost your job during the pandemic. My condolences. You will surely get another one soon enough, so as to do something worthwhile with your life once again. Till then, hang in there, mate!

NIRF scoring formula only takes into account median salary and total number of students placed. So yeah, your logic = aloo chop.
