NUJS committee to look into staff sexual harassment allegation tomorrow

NUJS Kolkata will hold an inquiry on Thursday (18 July) into a sexual harassment complaint made by a member of staff in the vice chancellor’s office against another staffer, who is understood to be on leave but has not resigned.

The victim alleged in June that she was receiving lewd emails and objectionable proposals from a senior staffer in the registrar’s department for over a year.

After she filed a written complaint to the VC, an “internal counseling committee” was constituted by the EC which has fixed Thursday as its first date of hearing, confirmed NUJS registrar Dr Surojit Mukhhopadhyay.

No one trusts the VC, Surojit Mukhhopadhyay or anyone else in the NUJS admin. The lovely dasgupta slapgate tells us that they will not respect basic administrative law principles.

No use blaming the administration alone. It sucks from time to time at every university. What matters is whether the students care. Why isn't the student body taking up the slapgate and the sexual harassment matters and not reporting the incidents to the police? Your university's future is in your own hands.

After the new VC took over, NUjS has been in news for all wrong reasons : exodus of faculty members, slap gate and now this. The Mysore dude and his cronies should stop insulting the chair on which luminaries like MP Singh and Madhava Menon sat once.

NUJS, with Surjit and P. Ishwara Bhatt at the helm of affairs, is going to dogs. Being a former faculty member there, I can confirm that a formal complaint is being drafted by the students in Lovely Dasgupta scam..ready to be sent to the next CJI. It's time that VC should call it quits. And Registrar should learn to control his ego now. High time.

Like Hell [...] is going to get justice here! She's been harassed by this guy for several months now and even complained to the VC earlier but no action. The accused is very close to the VC and together they have manipulated NUJS for their personal ends. The VC Is doing all he can to derail this investigation. And in the meantime a poor woman suffers endlessly.

Dear Flunkey Justice,
It's a basic courtesy and part of media ethics (If you care about the legal system, part of our law) not to disclose the name of the victim in a sexual harassment case. Please apologise. Legally India, please remove the comment which contains the name of the victim.
(Do you have the courage to disclose the name of the "guy" close to the VC???)

The same rule should also apply for the concerned Faculty. Why is the name of faculty being disclosed here. Shouldn't you delete the name of the Faculty as well?

I don't think the name of the other faculty member is mentioned. Though protections should arguably be stronger in such cases for the alleged harassee than the alleged harasser.

It is unfortunate that this complaint is also facing the same predicament as many other similar petitions elsewhere. Complainant's rights and due process fast forgotten and complaint turned into an arena of politics, in this case, petty power struggle.

Such complaints have a default pattern. First attempt will be to malign the complainant, the easy target. The resilient ones will have to undergo more torments. Lobbying and manipulation follows next. Committee members are the targets at this stage and the promises and threats used to sway the decision. It could be argued that this happens in all complaints and process. True, it is, but then sexual harassment complaint process gives ample space to play around the ingrained socio cultural biases . It takes a lot of integrity and strength to fight these dispositions. However progressive one may, it is always ..."two hands are needed for a clap, right?" attitude is not easy to brush aside. It is not suggested that there will never be persons beyond such cultural biases, but its difficult to find the person/s.

Some observations on the life of the present process at NUJS which stands witness to the earlier position taken

1. The delay in constituting committee and the unexplainable delay in convening the first meeting - clearly gives ample time for clouts to lobby and manipulate the situation
2. Resignation of one of the committee member even before the first meeting - an indication of pressurizing
3. One member of faculty actively maligning the complainant and people who offer moral support to the complainant. It is interesting to note that it is the same faculty who understandably is authorized to receive communication on behalf of the accused. The accused has gone incommunicado for all purposes to complete the process in the complaint
4. Visible lobbying done. The VC and some of the Committee Members actively trying to dissuade the complainant and broker compromise
5. And the same committee is now going to deliberate on the complaint and find fact!

As it was suggested earlier, the complaint process has shifted its focus from the violation of right to a means to regain power balance. The accused is seen to be the best around who enjoys the trust of the VC to ward off the Registrar. In this power play, justice is the casualty. More disheartening it is when this is happening in an institution of legal education which is expected to develop sensitivity among its members and society. It dampens the spirit all the more, when members of faculty who has to impart education is openly falling prey to power games.

Why the hell is the harasser not behind bars? And shame on the students for not standing up for the harassee, only indulging in arm chair talk about rape and sexual crimes. The students are a big bunch of useless dumbos. Screw them.

Vice Chancellor and Registrar should take moral responsibility for all the recent events at NUJS and forthwith resign immediately failing which they should be sacked as per demands of the students & alumni.

Is this national law school or neighbourhood laughing club ? Does the VC think he is running joker united or national university ? Immediately he should take responsiblity and issue strong statement And commit strict action. When water of flood will come to door.. Everyone will be washed away ... Then adminstration will not get plank to stand on... And save themselves
People are laughing at the state of affiars in this college .. Immediately cleaning of stables required to salvage reputation
Where is the General Body ? Come to your senses and see the rot around you . Act as it is in your best interest

Dear VC, time to go. Take that registrar with you too. And for god's sake, do not make another national law school your destination. May be, Mysore university will take you back. If not, do everyone a favour and retire
