NUJS RTI response fudges Skype interview rejection ahead of hotly anticipated EC meet tomorrow

“)As NUJS Kolkata’s executive council will convene tomorrow (8 February) to examine allegations of slipping academic standards at the law school, a Right to Information (RTI) response confirmed that the vice chancellor (VC) Prof Ishwara Bhatt claimed that he rejected interviewing an academic candidate via Skype because candidates would have to give a demonstration class, which has been contradicted by the former VC Prof MP Singh and college sources.

In the RTI response, NUJS claimed that Navin Thayyil, a PhD scholar from the Netherlands who applied to NUJS in December 2012, was denied a Skype interview, because “interview by Skype cannot be held for the post of Assistant Professor (Law) since demonstration lecture is to be given by the candidate”.

However, former VC MP Singh told Legally India that he had granted Skype interviews during his tenure to applicants Anup Surendranath and Yashumati Ghosh, adding that he may have also interviewed others via Skype, which “the records of the time may disclose”.

According to several NUJS sources, an English professor was also recently appointed at the college after a Skype interview without having required to take any demonstration classes.

A senior member of NUJS staff told Legally India that the information in the RTI was supplied directly by the vice chancellor’s office and added that at the time of Thayyil’s application there was no requirement for applicants to do demonstration classes.

Former NUJS professor Shamnad Basheer raised the issue of Thayyil’s interview in his resignation letter in December 2013, noting that “I took issue with your refusal to grant a Skype interview to a very promising Indian scholar from the Netherlands, owing to which we effectively lost him to IIT Delhi. You will recollect that the Executive Council also took strong note of this and recommended that Skype interviews be granted to scholars who are unable to fly at short notice to Kolkata.”

A petition by NUJS alumni, which has ostensibly been signed by nearly 500 students and alumni, claimed that “a former student of the VC was appointed as Assistant Professor” instead of Thayyil, and that “we are also given to believe that the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor sat in on the selection committee which appointed two of his former students (to whom he served as PhD guide) to the position of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. We are given to believe that he failed to disclose this conflict of interest to the Executive Council which ratified the appointments.”

In an NUJS executive council meeting around 2012, Vivek Kumar, the West Bengal education secretary, had asked if Bhat had any personal relations with any persons who were appointed or promoted at NUJS’ faculty.

Bhat confirmed to Legally India that he had responded to Kumar, stating “I have no personal relation with any of them”, but added that he was merely a “guide” to two faculty members who were respectively hired and promoted, and who were studying a PhD and an LLM at Mysore University, where he was vice chancellor at the time.

Tomorrow the executive council will also most likely consider allegations raised by students about whether there have been irregularities in certain contracts at the college.

APPEAL TO ALL THE MEMEBERS OF NUJS EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

Through this website of LI , I make an open appeal to Hon'ble Members of NUJS of EC :

We assure the Members that once the notice for looking into the documents on the scams in NUJS are published in the website of NUJS , we will on the same day appear in NUJS with all documents as evidence.

We also appeal for the presence of M.P.Singh and Ishwar Bhatt and former and present Registrar of NUJS in the above hearing so that all their scams are exposed in front of them giving them an opportunity to defend themselves on the contents of the documents in accordance to the principles of natural justice .

All the papers and the contents of the scam to be then uploaded in the public domain after the above.

The members who will be looking in to the documents will not be any person associated with NUJS so that there is no opportunity for biasness.

What is this ?

The RTI application date was 21.12.2013 seeking for information under RTI.

PIO NUJS letter was dated 20.12.2013 supplying the information under RTI.

It is shocking to note that the PIO of NUJS who is the Registrar of NUJS supplied the information under RTI one (1) day before of receiving the application seeking information under RTI ACT. ?

What is this ?
Please don't get surprised this NUJS a National Law School of India who are quite busy in making scams in NUJS ..........

We all feel sorry for the students. EC should remind themselves that they are the members of. EC of NUJS where the students pay their fees & others enjoy their remuneration from the students fees. Why the students wont be heard ? Is it that they fear the pandora boc will be opened ?. If EC is serious why did not they take a resolution for a CBI enquiry when students has exposed financial scam in NUJS ? If EC do not allow student representative to speak then let them return their temunetation to the students. Let the CBI step in all will be exposed........

Also AKP and Sulu. For those criticizing the VC I would like to know if it's fine if faculty takes long leave and does not take classes.

Nobody is an angel here. Maybe one of the reasons why LI has been largely silent on this whole issue is because they know that there is more than meets the eye. After the EC meeting LI will hopefully bring out the real facts instead of giving in to hysteria.

[...] didn't support the Registrar. He believes that if there are allegations against the VC and the Registrar, then both should be investigated side by side and one shouldn't be allowed to overshadow the other. VC and the faculty members lobbying for him have been trying to make the Registrar a scapegoat to cover for VC's incompetence since long.

Agreed. We all know that Indian media is dishonest and driven by narrow commercial interests, but this also extends to online media. Bar & Bench, LI, Lawctopus, Livelaw, Mylaw none of them will want to antagonize the establishment of NUJS and will prefer soft targets like the NUJS clerical staff accused of sexual harassment (just like CNN IBN will rather target Kalmadi than Sonia Gandhi). Websites like LI may have been started by idealistic young journalists, but in the end they eventually make compromises. It is left to us to use social media like blogs, twitter and reddit to discuss the NUJS issue. I would advise everyone to use social media and bypass LI to discuss the issue.

While not interviewing someone, over the skype or otherwise, might indicate a prejudice against a "promising candidate". If we keep on cornering/pinning down academics because they wan't/let their preotégés in their own institution/department we will have to investigate every single interview ever taken for professorship in this country.Besides more than half the posts in professorship are filled like this. However, what should be important is who this Mr. Thayyil is , do we really see Netherlands as country where " very promising" legal are mentored. Also what ticks off Mr.Basheer so much that he had to resign cause one man didn't get an opportunity to be interviewed. I smell a lot of personal vendetta and irregularities going at NUJS.Also the last few paragraphs read to have been spiced up against VC.

P.S.: I don't give VC any clean chit.Irregularities should be probed. If necessary heads should roll.

There has been clear match-fixing between NUJS admin and EC (some of whom are political appointees too). Only hope is for students to go to TOI, CNN IBN etc. Don't waste you time on legal news websites. Firstly they have a nexus with the corrupt elements. Secondly only a few hundred people visit these sites. Real impact will happen if TOI publishes it. Students should not fear because Mamata Banerjee hates the current NUJS authorities as she sees them as pro-CPIM.

As a noojie, let me speak and speak out loud! We are being led like blind idiots by vested interests. 2 of our representatives are like puppets in the hands of a faculty member and the VC. What is wrong with the EC decision? It simply asked the VC to investigate our student complaint, since our wise representatives had stupidly addressed their petition the the VC (Chairman of the EC). After all, the VC is the head of the institution. And if there are allegations against the registrar who is sub-ordinate to him, should not the VC first investigate and take action? What is stopping this? And why cry foul over a logical and reasonable EC decision? I think we need better leadership!

you need to question the VC and the faculty member in question. why did they promise the students when they clearly could not deliver? i can't really understand this: if the student petition is addressed to the VC, why didn't he investigate it himself? no wonder the EC chucked it out without hearing the students. this bloody idiot of a VC needs to go!
