NUJS secured 119 mostly pre-Covid placements for 2019-20 batch: 64+ in highest-pay bracket, 17 lit, 17 future CSE/judges

NUJS 2020 recruitment committee
NUJS 2020 recruitment committee

The NUJS Kolkata Campus Recruitment Committee (CRC) 2020 has released its final placement statistics for the 2019-20 academic year, with more than 60 accepted job offers from the highest paying law firms, according to a release by its Student Juridical Association (SJA).

In total there were 119 opportunities accounted for, including 75 law firm jobs, 2 in-house positions and 17 opting for litigation chambers.

Civil services and judicial services exam preparation remained popular, with 8 and 9 respectively going for each of those.

Four would do policy and research work, while two would join startups, according to the CRC.

Purely numerically, these numbers are comparable and arguably (and of course very subjectively) an improvement on 2019’s results (which were the last full recruitment figures published from NUJS),

We have asked for confirmation of the precise size, but understand that the total undergraduate batch strength at NUJS is just over 120 students normally.

Breakdown

The largest recruiter by far was Trilegal, with a massive 15 students hired, followed by Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas with 11, and L&L Partners with 9 jobs.

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas and AZB & Partners both made 8 offers, while Khaitan & Co made 6 offers.

In addition, students bagged one vacation scheme (a prestigious paid summer internship) with foreign law firm Allen & Overy, as well as one training contract.

Unusually, in-house only contributed 2 to the total tally with jobs at ICICI Bank.

All those firms pay amongst the highest possible salaries amongst organisations recruiting from Indian law schools (in addition to firms such as S&R Partners and Talwar Thakore & Associates).

Across firms, that accounts to at least 64 jobs at such traditionally high-paying workplaces.

Litigation saw 17 total offers.

Further education, like in-house, was also not terrifically popular this year with only one LLM and one MS in Commerce abroad at Cambridge and the University of Virginia abroad.

Caution remains reserved for current batches

Despite the strong result, these come with a massive asterisk for current batches considering the continuing uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic and associated recruitments.

One NUJS source confirmed that almost all the above offers had been confirmed before the full emergence of Covid-19 in early 2020. Covid-time figures and impacts on recruitments, if any, would more likely be reflected in the batch of 2021’s results, said the student.

The 2020 CRC consisted of Aditya Kumar, Aditya Rajagopal, Agreema Sanghai, Anirudh Goyal, Lakshya Thukral, Prakhar Mittal (coordinator), Shreshth Tomar, Tejas Popat (coordinator) and Vidushi Garg.

The committee said in its statement:

Despite the pandemic, the record of the Batch of 2020 continues along the path of excellence that has been a hallmark of NUJS and its graduating students over the years. This could not have been possible without the immense support and trust that members of the CRC 2020 got from the Batch of 2020 as also, from the CRCs and RPCs of the previous and current batches. Equally, we remain grateful to our faculty advisor Prof. Mr. Anirban Mazumdar who has been a pillar of support. The entire process of recruitment would never have the success it remains without the guidance and support of the Vice Chancellor, the faculty and all administrative and non-administrative staff at NUJS. Our gratitude also goes out to the alumni in continuing to support the University through all these years.

Appearing for Civil Services Examination Judicial Services Examination is not really an 'Alternative career options', Kian. If one is to go purely by numbers, I would say joining a law firm is an alternative career option.

Also, the two folks joining startups, are they joining in a non-legal role? If not why is it an alternative career option? A few days back you had reported a law firm partner joining as GC of a food-tech startup?

No man, these details are important. Have you seen the threads here where law students for real think there is no alternative other than a law firm. These things are a matter of perception and getting a firm job has almost become the barometer for measuring success in law school. It is about time that the perception you haven't made it unless you get into a law firm is dismantled.

To be fair, Legally India has played a part in hyping up law firm careers and downplaying alternative careers. Random partners in random firms get coverage here, but not those in alternative careers. It sends a wrong message to law aspirants.

Most unimpressive compared to previous batches from the very same college. Only 1 admit to an Oxbridge/Ivy League institution and then 1 admit to Virginia. Only 2 in-house. Only 1 TC. Compare with previous years, when stats were much better. NUJS needed an excellent recruitment to rebound in the NIRF rankings, because it scores low on the parameters. This is not it.

I don't know where you get your stats from, but these numbers are historical. No college comes even near the recruitment. As far as admissions to Ivy Leagues/Oxbridge goes, why are you discounting the fact that some people don't want to spend 40 Lacs when they can earn much more right out of college, gain valuable experience and fund their own LLM.

Several people have actually deferred their LLM offers in light of COVID and have chosen to work for a year from home instead. At least 4-5 have got such offers.

The VC gave an interview to TOI which gave a very different picture. He never once mentioned so many law firm offers. He instead mentioned students are opting for academics when only 2 are going for higher studies. He also mentioned Tata, ITC etc, which are missing this list. What's going on?

NLUD has done that earlier in one year about median salary received. Quite a controversy. But as it is, NIRF doesn't actually do any fact check, so all the data that they get from all institutions are suspect anyway.
LegallyIndia 13 Apr 2021, 05:32
+16 -0
This thread has been reported for fact-checking. NLU Delhi may have massaged their NIRF salary submissions a little one year, though it could also have been attributable to a misreading / vagueness of the NIRF wording: https://www.legallyindia.com/lawschools/nirf-law-school-ranking-median-salary-fact-check-nalsar-definitely-screwed-up-nlu-delhi-was-a-bit-cheeky-nujs-was-most-honest-20180411-9275

Nalsar was more egregious in supplying incorrect median salary figures that year.
Guest 12 Apr 2021, 19:05
+3 -3
It's not that they straight-out LIE about figures, but they definitely tweak them. They calculate their average salaries on the basis of the number of people taking law firm jobs and not the overall number of students in the batch. For example, if even only 10 people out of a batch of 100 get placed with a 12 lakh salary package, the university would claim that the average salary of the entire batch is 12 lakh. NLUD has definitely done this in the past, alongside a few other top universities

The low LLM numbers is because of a demographic change. Earlier, NLU students were westernised elite kids from big cities who wanted to go abroad. The present students are very rooted to India and want to stay in India. Many are appearing for UPSC and judicial service compared to previous years. In fact, the elite kids are nowadays going to Jindal, so Jindal has a lot of people going abroad.

There is also the money factor. Paying Rs 50 lakhs for an LLM (or even Rs 20 lakhs with a partial scholarship) is a big deal for those who are not elite.
Guest 12 Apr 2021, 14:10
+7 -0
You are completely wrong. The low LLM acceptances for this year is because of COVID. Several offers have been deferred. Those students have taken up jobs and would go for their LLM a year later. In every year, most of the top foreign universities in the world have got NLU students in their LLM batch including those from NUJS.

As someone actually from JGLS- Kudos to NUJS, it was a difficult time and you have done great!! Party hard guys!! Really happy for you as fellow law students

And people purporting to be JGLS in comments above are not from JGLS, we are a private university with a different fee structure and student demographic and tier 1 NLUs are government universities with a different student demographic. Not adding a negative connotation to it but both have their own pros and cons and can’t be compared. JGLS students would never draw comparison with tier 1 NLUs and people doing that above are not JGLS students. These are outsiders who enjoy some trolling.

I am not the spokesperson but in JGLS students don’t think of things that way. And a lot of claims that they make are not even remotely related to JGU which makes it clear that these are not JGU students, if they were, they would not ignore some basic facts that every jgls students knows. 5) JGLS
6) GNLU

With these numbers, I think NUJS be placed ahead of NLUJ. Further, I think even GNLU should be placed ahead of NLUJ. For the same 2020 batch, GNLU placed more than 50 in top tier firms, whereas NLUJ could hardly place around 35 in Tier 1 firms by the end of day zero.

Even for 2021 batch CAM took more than 8 students from GNLU on day zero and 0 from NLUJ.

I think NLUJ is hyped in the official rankings. It is no way better than NUJS. Personally, I think its not anymore better than GNLU.

I compared the two and no ways NLUJ stats are better than NUJS'. If you count only Tier 1 offers, the total number of offers of NLUJ are 33 only plus 3 vacation schemes (I don't know how many of these converted to TCs). NUJS tier 1 offers are 57 and 44 of GNLU.

How do you say NLUj stats are better than any of these?

Hi, Does anyone have any idea how many students on average per batch are selected from NLS, NALSAR, NUJS, NLUJ, GNLU and NLUD for Oxbridge/Harvard/Yale LLM?

I could see that only 1 student from NUJS got an offer from the 2020 batch. I wonder how many from other colleges got selected for the 2020 and 2021 batch
Guest 13 Apr 2021, 05:02

At least 6 students got such offer. Only one accepted in this year, while the others deferred because of COVID. If you actually bothered to read the other comments, you would have already got that info. For example, the Harvard LLM batch couple of years back had many as 6 NUJS alum in it.

Please reply only of freshers. After, 5 years of work experience if you are going to LLM that depends more on your work ex rather than law school.

Simply, on the basis of article we coulf find only 1 Cambridge offer for 2020 Nujs batch. If you know other offers for 2020 or 2021 batch, do let us know

All your LLM offers depend on you as an individual and your ability and achievements. Foreign law schools don't have any quota reserved for Indian law schools or law firms or any other recruiter.

Whoever you are, your so called "prediction" is so grossly misleading. NLUD better than NUJS is a dream that is not going to be achieved in the foreseeable future. As regards NLUJ, It's not even worth talking about it.

If we're talking of 2020 placements, rather than 2021 placements, I believe other colleges can take note and release them as well. I understand that disclosing the 2021 batch figures could be complicated because it may trigger a chain of uncertainty, but I'm not seeing much wrong with the 2020 batch. The main distinction will be less LLM candidates around the board.

1) NLS, or THE LAW SCHOOL, I mean, if NUJS had a respectable placement season, NLS has to have the most impressive season. Even in a recession, they'd hire from NLS, and NLS has to disclose its statistics to justify its claim of dominance.

2) I am a candidate of NALSAR, and I assume that our recruitment season was greater than this one. I don't recall anybody from the 2020 batch being forced to study for the judiciary or civil service. I'm not sure about NLS; I'm just pressing NALSAR right now, because if NALSAR launches and NLS doesn't, NALSAR would be at the top of the rankings. NALSAR has always had stronger placements than NLS (in my opinion), as well as superior campus infrastructure and other variables. NLS has become more oriented towards academia owing to its setting; NGL holds some strong positions in academia, but NALSAR has performed well in terms of employment in a strict commercial context. Professor F should have the statistics released.

3) I interned at a tier 1 company in Mumbai and saw a bunch of A0s from Jindal in my online video orientation. Also during the pandemic, candidates have been bragging that they had a perfect placement season in every moot, moon, and earth. They had a decent placement year in 2019, but it wasn't enough to break through the trio of NLS, NALSAR, and NLUD. If you have placements, then post them; otherwise, the arguments are meaningless.

4) Prior to the pandemic, NLUD was performing very well, but I've learnt that they could just underperform in 2020 and 2021. They must publish the placements if they wish to stay in the top three.

It is in the best interests of each of these universities if they release their statistics; NUJS has taken a bold step in this direction.

I don't care how good these placements may be. The hard reality is that the reputation of a law school is determined by the NIRF ranking and CLAT preference, which is based on a number of parameters in addition to placements. NUJS was regarded as a close rival to NLSIU during Madhav Menon and MP Singh's time, but it has fallen due to bad administration and political interference by the TMC government since then, leading to an exodus of faculty and decline in infrastructure. This has been reflected in the NIRF ranking and CLAT preference.

I have reported your comment for being misleading and malicious. Neither has LI confirmed what you claim it has said nor does LI have the means to do so (i.e. actually verify claims in full measure).

Contrary to what you salty Noojies think, NIRF does have a verification of a college's claims. Please see: https://news.careers360.com/nirf-2021-delayed-unlikely-be-released-in-early-april-official where it clearly says and I quote “Coming up with NIRF 2021 in the first week of April would mean whatever data universities have submitted, we just put that in the computer and release it. That is not possible, we need to validate it, analyse the data then only come up with the rankings which will take some time.”

Assuming that the first NIRF was somewhat unclear on the verification process, the next two certainly haven't been. So the top 3 of NIRF truly belong there and no matter how much NUJS does this placements PR, it won't be displacing them in the near future. Overtake NLUJ first.

There have been multiple controversies about NIRF having published false data provided by universities like BHU that have been covered by mainstream media. But I guess you need to have research skills or regular reading habits to be aware of such things. And your argument is that NIRF verifies the data independently because they mentioned in a press release that they do? Wow, talk about being gullible of the year!

VERY IMPORTANT AND URGENT: The person who is charge of NIRF is a person called Dr Anil Kumar Nassa. Since so much controversy is happening around NIRF, it is critical that LI contacts him for an interview and asks him about how NIRF gathers data, as well as the mysterious "perception score". His contact details are public (see below). LI must contact him instead of allowing comment fights. He has also written a long journal article on rankings, published a few months ago. He writes in the article:

- "Reputation or perception is a highly subjective criteria of assessment and evaluation since academicians are likely to get influenced with established reputation of institutions, called ‘‘halo’’ effect"

- "Reputation or perception is considered as the most subjective indicator that can attract biased and manipulated opinions."

- "QS source its data from web sites of universities for ranking if a university itself does not provide data to the QS. Such data could be misleading."

I like how NUJS students are out here in armies to justify these placements

1) As clearly stated, this is no great achievement as these are pre pandemic placements and the timing has been beautifully managed to make it seem like they achieved this success during the pandemic. Why are they releasing figures of 2020 so late?

2) We already had 0 day figures of 2020 of competitors like NLUJ and GNLU, these figures seem much better as mentioned in an aforementioned comment. And these are not even the final placements and they have more foreign tcs and better LLMs one year prior to the conclusion of 2020 placements

3) NIRF and other rankings further add to the argument. While NLS and JGLS have been considered by QS and the former by NIRF too. NLUD has also done great in NIRF. NALSAR has always proved itself. NUJS has yet to prove a lot even to claim fourth of fifth spot competing with the likes of NLS, NALSAR, NLUD, NLUJ, and JGLS. Even GNLU.

4) NUJS was no doubt #3 some years ago when there was a lack of better law schools. But with the emergence of new and arguably better located law schools like NLUD and the rise of NLUJ, only bad has happened to NUJS as their best VC left and most influential professors were poached by the likes of JGLS. The onus remains on NUJS to prove that they are #3, merely publishing stats of 2020 and patting one’s own back on LI doesn’t prove anything

5) NUJS has always suffered due to lack of a an infra and their miniscule campus space and even worse hostels. Newer NLUs like NLUD with great prospects have better infrastructure and placement. Even NLUJ has a better infrastructure. NLUD has the best faculty in all of NLUs.

6) For students it’s always been NLS or NLUD. NLUD has mostly been chosen above NALSAR in clat prefs. And NALSAR is an entire league above NUJS undisputedly.

NUJS has not proved or disproved any of the above and published 2020 placement figures to mislead CLAT aspirants. TIER 1 universities have always remained 3 and NLS, NALSAR and NLUD comfortably rest over there. NUJS as a tier 2 university still has to compete with the likes of NLUJ, JGLS, GNLU and NLIUB. Although I believe NUJS’ doom is identical to NLIUB which was one of the best. NUJS being ex number 3 suffered the most from emergence of newer universities like NLUD and JGLS. The number of jobs has mostly remained the same and better universities have only emerged and so someone had to lose on the jobs. NUJS took the L on this one.

7) Ganging up in comments section and downvoting facts and criticism would not prove a point. Prove your point by actually doing good NUJS.

Reality check: I am reproducing the NIRF table below. NUJS is behind NLSIU, NLUD and NALSAR by a humungous 15, 11 and 9 points respectively. Even overtaking NLUJ will require improvements on at least one of the parameters and I don't see where that will come from. Faculty hiring is suspended because of state elections, infrastructure is weak because of lack of funding by the state government, no visible research achievements, and introduction of domicile quota (for which NUJS will lose points, since NIRF has a regional diversity parameter).

Instead of fighting on LI you people should meet with your Chief Minister, state Chief Justice and alumni and seek their help. In fact, you may very well have both a new Chief Minister and state Chief Justice soon who could be sympathetic to the college.

These Rankings were from the time when NUJS had an interim administration, who shrugged away responsibility. As we speak, NUJS has made progress in all aspects by leaps and bounds. Keeping recruitment aside (which is the best undisputedly), there is an increased emphasis on excellent research output. The number of research centres doing phenomenal work has shot up! The improvements will be reflected in the next NIRF Ranking. I hope we can have a conversation then.

NLUD has a Rhodes scholar from 2021 batch, admits from Cambridge already as well. Even during the pandemic 90% of the placement pool have gotten jobs
3 vac schemes already from the 2022 batch at HSF, Links and A&O.
University has won Manfred Lachs, OXIPR and was semi-finalists at Vis Vienna and Stetson this year.
UPSC wise ranks 8, 9, 35 over last three years.

JGLS can't compete with NLUO, let alone NLUD.

Most folks can't digest the fact that a university established in 2008 has been dominating the old NLU guard.

But in all honesty, it's about time it's understood that tier 1 is pretty broad and includes NLS/NLUD/NUJS/NALSAR/NLUJ/NLIU. All come with their own sets of perks and agar job hi chaiye, then all these university's can ensure a placement for you in a corp firm if you're decent enough.

It's so senseless, all these debates about which law school is better etc etc. It sounds like CLAT coaching teacgers who have never even seen inside of an NLU, guiding students to take JGLS after the Top 5 🤦‍♂️. Regardless of what you choose among the top 5 (Tier 1) you will get a good corporate placement as these institutes are held in a very high regard as compared to the rest of the colleges.
The sheer number of placements fluctuate based on student interests and batch sizes. So please stop this banter over which NLU is better. You will get an equal headstart from them all!

JGLS kids won’t even say anything and these NLU kids would get insecure for no reason and start comparing with NLUO n sheez. Bro if JGLS is not a threat to you, why are you so obsessed with it? Leave it let it be. If there are no placements there, LI does occasionally publish placements reports of tier 1 NLUs and JGLS and any student who has cracked CLAT and has offers from tier 1 NLUs and JGLS would be sane enough to analyse those placements stats and choose the university he wishes to proceed with based on his free will. If JGLS is not securing any placements for its kids and not threatening any tier 1 NLU just let them. Y’all pounce on posts related and unrelated to JGU and crib about it for no reason.

I mean same goes for tier 1 NLUs as well, y’all are fighting for #1, #2 and #3 spots but in actuality multiple factors come into account. All tier 1 are nearly equal, even if NLS is better than NLUD, a student might choose NLUD over NLS because the difference is slight and they are a resident of Delhi and wish to stay close to home and vice versa.

LI has been publishing placement stats and other achievements of universities. Any student who has any offer from any tier 1 university would be sane enough to assess them based on his preferences. If all of you are from tier 1 universities as you claim, you must be having your mid sem assessments rn, maybe you should all focus on that or you’ll go unplaced and bring down the placement stats you’re boasting about in the comments section. Establishing superiority in LI comments section is so stupid and here it is just my word against yours. I could be a kid from amity and i could say that amity is better than nujs and kian will still publish that because free speech. So just let it be, let aspirants decide themselves.

And there might just not be a #1, #2 or #3 but just excellent universities, good universities, decent universities and pathetic universities.
