Prof Ranbir Singh: from Hyderabad to Delhi

*Exclusive: Current NLU Delhi vice chancellor Professor (Dr) Ranbir Singh will be honoured with this year’s Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) Madhava Menon law teacher of the year award, while the Goa-based Salgaocar College of Law has been chosen for the institutional excellence award.

SILF president Lalit Bhasin told Legally India that former Nalsar Hyderabad vice chancellor Singh was chosen for the award, which is named after its first recipient Professor NR Madhava Menon, because he had introduced advocacy into legal education and took quality legal education to new heights.

The new “most innovative law teacher” award would go to Dr Shashikala Gurpur, who is the director of Symbiosis Law School and the Dean of the college’s Faculty of Law.

VM Salgaocar College of Law in Goa will be honoured with the “institutional excellence award”.

The “posthumous distinguished law teacher” award would be awarded to Professor AT Markose, who was the first director of Indian Law Institute (ILI).

The awards ceremony will be held in New Delhi on 10 September following India’s national teachers’ day on 5 September.

In 2010 the law teacher of the year prize went to Professor Mizanur Rahman, faculty of law Dhaka University and chairman of the National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh, and to Menon in its 2009 inaugural year.

ranbir singh is several things but i wouldn't have thought a 'teacher' was one of them.

He is the best ever administrator, he put an obscure village known as 'Shameerpet' on the world map and had been extremely aggressive to build what is known today as NALSAR. As a former NALSARite, I say, "Hail Ranbir Singh!"

I have come across some great law professors across Indian when I was in Law school. Its such a let down to have Mr. Singh get this award. No doubts he lead the making of two finest NLUs but even his students will agree with me when I say that "HE DONT DESREVE IT". But then Again, who cares!

Ranbir Singh Sir has given me the power to believe in my dreams. He has ensured me a bright future. He's like a father to all students at NLU,Delhi. In my opinion, he deserves every bit of the laurels that he is receiving.

What are these awards about? Does SILF know all, or even half (okay 10%???), of the law faculties in different law colleges? I have known some great law professors (and not just in my lawschool) whom their students admire for their approach and selflessness. Would SILF know about them? SILF members sitting in Delhi depend on what data - their associates comments? Random awards these, I must say.

P.S. - I did not attend NALSAR but definitely agree that RS is a great administrator and has done NALSAR and NLS Delhi well. In the lawschool community, Bakshi, Menon, Mitra and RS are like legends.
