Pangea3 hires 18 from campus, will pump Rs 48 crore into Delhi to outgrow Mumbai

Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) company Pangea3 has hired 18 students through campus placements this year with a majority 12 coming from non-national law schools, as the company has moved into larger Delhi office and plans to grow the location with significant investment.

The LPO has budgeted to spend Rs 48 crores over the next two years towards the development of its new office, which is located in Noida’s sector 58 and with staff having transferred from its old Delhi satellite office in January.

Pangea3 co-CEO Sanjay Kamlani said: “Frankly I expect our Delhi office ultimately to be bigger than our Mumbai office. There’s probably more legal talent in Delhi than in Mumbai and it is certainly far more cost effective to run a business out of Delhi than central Mumbai, even in the suburbs.”

Pangea3’s main office is located in Mumbai’s Andheri area (pictured), where it employs around 500 staff, while its Delhi office has grown from 30 to 70 staff in the past four months since moving into its 14,000 square foot office there.

According to the Kamlani the site includes expansion capability of more than 28,000 square feet and 300 additional seats, while the company would invest at least Rs 16 crores ($3.5m) in 2010 into Delhi and double that amount in 2011.

Pangea3 Campus Recruitment 2009-10 Army Institute of Law Chandigarh: 4 Faculty of Law Campus Law Centre Delhi: 3 Amity Law School Symbiosis: 2 GNLU Gandhinagar: 2 NLU Jodhpur: 2 Symbiosis Pune: 2 GLC Mumbai: 1 NLIU Bhopal: 1 NUJS Kolkata: 1

Falling in line with facility building is Pangea3’s aim to increase manpower base in Delhi to 150 lawyers in 2010. Kamlani explained: “In just the past month, we have recruited more than 50 lawyers, and within the next 3 to 6 months, we expect to recruit more than 100 additional lawyers for our Delhi facility.”

The LPO has also recruited 18 law students from law school campuses in the past year, with five coming from national law schools (see table, right).

The new centre will discharge full services including corporate and risk management compliance while earlier it had only been delivering patent analytics, patent prosecution services, litigation and electronic discovery services from Delhi.

Pangea3 is backed by private equity firms GlenRock Capital and Sequoia Capital, which invested $4.4m in 2004 and $7m in 2007 respectively. Within the last year Pangea3 grew headcounts by 50 per cent in Mumbai.

@1- buddy you need to understand that
all the news published out here is publicity stunt rather than 'pure news'
so neither Kian nor Pangea3 really care about the details..
so i dont think it really makes any big difference.

Hi,

We published the numbers we requested from Pangea3, I will check about IFCAI and include.

@2 - we do care about the details. Generally we try to publish news that will be interesting to readers or those in the industry. Some news may be more interesting or relevant to some than to others by necessity. In this case, we found that these recruitment figures were an interesting illustration of where LPOs recruit from.

We will double check on ICFAI in any case.

Best regards
Kian

Such a pity that LPOs are the only "foreign" firms that the greedy monopolists in India allow. Lalit Bhasin is on record opposing even these humble LPOs, and and Balaji the Great has named them in his plaint! If the BCI had its way, the gold medallists from NLSIU/NUJS/NALSAR would be working as unpaid servants for High Court advocates, and their duties would include washing dishes and buying vegetables (I actually know of a awyer who made his junior perform the latter task---no joke!)

@5: Haha! Dude seriously wake-up! There are various law schools apart from NLSs from where students do get placed! (decent placements). As a matter of fact, placements of ICFAI this year has been pretty satisfactory.

I guess Kian should get in touch with Placement Committee members of these colleges, the likes of Amity, ICFAI, Symbiosis, Army, Christ and also publish their placement info in a consolidated news article.

Making a junior lawyer purchase vegetables is not a reflection on the employee's caliber. It is a reflection on employer's own insecurity and the need to dominate. Both are to be blamed. The senior for delegating such a task and the junior for performing it.

We have been in touch with some of these colleges so far but some of these such as Symbi had not yet finished their recruitment season as of last week.

Some colleges we have not been able to contact yet - if you are from one of these colleges or have contacts there, please do email us and we will get in touch.

@ 12: Dude, seriously c'mon! LPO placements are in no way any reflection of the placements of any college. This year students from ICFAI are placed with top law firms, corporates, LPO's etc. The placement per cent has been good too.

As a matter of fact: we are a comparatively young law school and we really know where we stand. We do not aspire for what we are not capable of.

We are a very simple law school aspiring to make a mark in the legal fraternity. We respect all law schools and deserve to be respected for what we are. So, speak sense and with maturity. Simply put: grow up!

I really Don't understand what makes one from NLU's more mature than the rest law students of India. You guys get the best exposure, do one denies that. A few from the NLU's do make the best of the opportunities which the NLU's have to offer. Others simply keep on boasting and boasting. I hate that you guys look down upon the other law school, even when they accept that they are far below you guys. Through this forum it becomes more and more evident that the nature of the students of the NLU's is not something on which one can speak highly of.

@ #9:

"Making a junior lawyer purchase vegetables is not a reflection on the employee's caliber. It is a reflection on employer's own insecurity and the need to dominate."

Exactly. Indian employers are feudal lords who derive pleasure from treating bright people like servants. If foreign law firms are allowed in these undeserving zamindars be crushed. There will be job opportunities for far more people and we will not see this stupid NLU vs the rest debate.

"Both are to be blamed. The senior for delegating such a task and the junior for performing it."

Sorry, but don't blame the junior. Jobs in the legal sector are hard to come by as the legal sector is still stuck in the 1960s Nehruvian era. I know many people in the top Indian firms who always complain against the families that own these firms, but can't leave because they do not have any choice and need to support their families. Perhaps the only thing young advocates in India shoud be blamed for is fighting among themselves and not having the b****s to unite and demand foreign law firms.

To 17, 18 and their ilk. I happen to be
from NLS and I know several phenomenally
talented lawyers who are from non NLUs.
I have also interacted with several NLU
grads who have bloated egos, exaggerated
opinions about themselves and are an
embarrassment to the profession because of
the negligible legal aptitude. Learn to
live and let live. You are basking in reflected
glory if you are from an NLU and use that
to condemn a non NLU institution. It
only reflects poorly on yourself. Remember,
those who cannot make it big - belittle.

@ 19: The NLU big boss stuff is not very different from the AMSS story. It takes the entry of foreign elements to tame both: law firms for the later and the Ivy league for the former.

What is going on with all these comments. Why is it everytime that NLU's fight with private law schools (vice-versa) in this forum? This is pathetic.

The lack of sensibility in all these comments tarnishes the object of the news post.

amused by all these comments on a sunny Friday afternoon (you may guess where i am located!) BTW what is the meaning of the word DUDE? this has appeared so many times on the comments that it is begining to sound like "doodh" (Milk in Hindi)....

this word is surely not of English origin, then where has it come from? gutters of Harlem perhaps?

What is not sensible? The news post directly touches upon how the market views different law schools. Why is there a "fight" on NLU v. other colleges?: because they are different. And who is being disrespective? About whom?

I am wondering whether Kian and Neha have any idea about LPO and it's processes. The requirements (in terms of man power and skill level) of an LPO and what they look for in a law graduate to hire. Please do not make it a news when you do not know the structure and function of an LPO.....
kianganz 5 Jun 2010, 03:07

Please do share more details about what you disagree with - it is quite hard to figure that part out from your comment apart from general disagreement.

I don't remember that we wrote much about processes or skill levels - all we reported was from which colleges students were recruited from and about their expansion plans in terms of capital investment and headcount. If that is not news, I do not know what is, although I apologise if it was not an interesting article for you.

Kian and others as far as I know, Pangea3 didnt come to ICFAI Law School's campus for any recruitment. However, one or two students were offered placements through off campus which took place very recently.

I don understand y do people fail to understand and realise that there are others beyond them?No not that I am from Amity or ICFAI.I am from a decent National law college But guys common think in a bigger prospective. If these Private college are getting placed , y is it upsetting you.Are you being insecured?N if that is not the case then was is the reason.why cant we just appreciate them and think positive?
u say discrimination is in the process of extinction.Guys this discrimination of being a Nationalite and Non-Nationalite is even worse.

@ 5 The statement u gave is a sarcastic one.Why cant u just query about it rather being sarcastic.

@11 You need to hone up your research skills!Improve it if u r a student.U will need it when you work.

@12 You have serious comprehending problems. No where in the post it has been written that LPO Placements are decent.n lemme tell you Pangea3 is not any other LPO.Its the best right now.

@16,17 & 18:Pride is okay but this is foolishness i will say!U surely need to mature!Grow up!Too much arrogance lead to self-destruction.The sooner u realise the better it is.

Kian why dont you conduct a survey from Senior Associates or Associates of Tier I and Tier II law firms and ask them how non-NLU students perform during their internships. My friend did his internship at AMSS twice and performed really well but he couldnt managed to get a PPO because AMSS do not visit non-NLU campuses. A Principal Associate have asked him to try for lateral after two-three years.

Great idea. We will try to get the first part of the salary associate survey out this week and could follow up with a poll/survey of sorts.

The only risk is that you might get lots of non-NLU students and others voting in such a poll, skewing the results. I will see whether we can feasibly do something more bespoke perhaps...

Kian

one observation: It might be a good start for non N school students to get their english right. Some of their comments are slightly difficult to comprehend.

Second: I love the term N school. Its got a dangerous ring to it.

And thirdly:@ 21 - I love your idea of a face off. Maybe it should be televised.
Anonymous guest 8 Jun 2010, 00:07

@40 Good first point. Actually, it might be good for everyone, including N School students, to get their English right. It's a misconception that law is all about oral skills. It is not. Ultimately, law is more about writing. Have you seen lawyers and law students who show off their skills by trying to argue at the drop of a hat and out speak everyone? Haven't you had the urge to give them one tight slap? That's because their verbosity is full of hot air. On the contrary, one always respects a lawyer who rights well. Moreover, arguably no other professional - not even a journalist - writes as much as a lawyer. The better you writing skills you have - the better lawyer can you be. Platforms like these are excellent for developing your writing skills.

@21 - Knowledge is proud that it knows so much. Wisdom is humble that it knows no more. There are a 1000 things that a N School student may know, but there are a 100 billion things that he still does not. When I joined the bar after graduating from India's finest law school, during the first six months I learnt more about practice, civil procedure and court craft from a standard 10 failed clerk than from my senior.

In the past four months, 6 new recruits have been from the Faculty of Law, AMU. I request Kian to be very particular about collecting data from the employers. Most times, the employers will flaunt one recruit from NLS, but won't tell much about ten recruits from a non-NLS law school.

I have had the chance of knowing a lot of students from the NLS and NLU circuit , personally theses people have worked hard to crack the CLAT exams which is not an easy task to do, most of those I've met have a high legal calibur and that should be appreciated instead of bickering because of their skills . Now for those who don't crack the exam like me choose other law colleges which also provide quality education and there are a lot of students who are just as good as those from national Law schools, personally I believe that just because you get a high score in the CLAT exam doesn't make you all that great , what determines a good lawyer is one who skilled and witty now not all skilled people come from NlUs , but most of them get better placements than us,Luthra, Amar Chand and not mere LPO's ...therefore I am going to do the exam again because the family bond there is strong .
