BCI scraps 1 of 3 Jubilee moots at NLU-J; Christ-LKS-CCI start India’s 2nd anti-trust moot

The Bar Council of India (BCI) Trust has changed its golden jubilee mooting festival plans, clarifying this week that out of the three planned moots in collaboration with [[Institute of Law, Nirma University]], [[NLU Delhi]] and [[NLU Jodhpur]], the latter has been cancelled by the host university.

This would reduce the number of moot to celebrate the BCI’s 50th birthday to two moots this season, which is still one more than last year, as reported by Legally India earlier this month.

BCI Trust secretary in-charge CS Kandpal said that they had received a letter from NLU Jodhpur this week. “The university had mentioned in the letter that it will not be able to organise the moot due to some uncertainties.”

Kandpal confirmed that the BCI Trust would not seek any other colleges to collaborate with this season. “There are already two moots for now. Further, we are also working on other seminars and workshops.”

Anti-Trust moots - one too many?

[[Christ Law College Bangalore|School of Law, Christ University]] announced that it is collaborating with national law firm Lakshmi Kumaran & Sridharan (LKS) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to organise an anti-trust moot dealing with anti-trust and competition laws. The moot is scheduled for January 2012.

Prashanth Shivadass from Christ said that the University students were excited to organise the moot in January. “We had our flagship moot last September and now we working on the anti-trust moot in January.”

Both LKS and CCI were collaborating with [[NLU Jodhpur]] for the anti-trust moot during the previous seasons.

NLU Jodhpur moot convener Pranay Bagdi said that the University was also going to hold its own anti-trust moot this season. “We have been organising anti-trust moots right from the beginning. Even though LKS is not collaborating with us this season, we will be organising the anti-trust moot in March.”

Team MPL is considering including both anti-trust moots in this season’s MPL. Reader input requested.

MPL included Anti trust as a Recognized moot becuz it was the CCI-LKS Anti Trust Moot and not merely becuz NLU-J was hosting it.

On this note, both Christ's Anti Trust and the NLU-J Anti trust must be included in the MPL.

yes! i think the christ university moot shuold be included in tier 5 list of moots!

The reason is that nlujodhpur was inlcuded in this years mpl because it was done in collaboration with LKS-CCI and two such successful collaborations have been previously carried out! the moot in christ would be third such collaboration of LKS-CCi

There was never any LKS-CCI collaboration. It was an NLUJ-CCI collaboration and an NLUJ-LKS collaboration. So the Christ one is a different moot may be the first LKS-CCI collaboration (if that is true), if you will!

I agree with 7 - the LKS moot is already technically there

the NLU-J moot should be treated cautiously. Whilst LKS and CCI were organising, judges from Delhi, etc., would come down for the moot. Dunno how will NLU-J organise competition law judges in Jodhpur.

NLU-J MCC should have not let go of this opportunity . It is among one of the most premier law school in the country and should take up intiatives to live up to its reputation and maintain its rankings and also
And BCI Moot was a wonderful opportunity which they have let go , apparently because of the "laziness if the students " ( Especially MCC )

Why is it disappointing? We don't want to conduct these moots this year, we have other things planned. Why the sensationalism over this? It's a policy decision, get over it.

There are various administrative decisions which have to be taken before a moot is organized. We must give NLUJ the benefit of the doubt there must be some internal constraint or over riding need due to which they refused.
Secondly If LKS doesnt collaborate some other major firm would its NLUJ we are talking about. We mustnt count the chickens before the eggs hatch.

I totally agree with #15 and #16 NLUJ MCC is competent enough to decide what they want to do and how they want to do it as evidenced by the MPL standings. We don't want points for organizing moots when we can win them. So I think we retain the autonomy to act in accordance to the best interests of the University after considering various aspects which might not be visible on the face of it :-)

No need to throw the NLU-J brandwagon around! Internal constraint or not, it is still disappointing that NLU-J lost the moot! And by the looks of it, to a Non-National Law School.

I don't think it's a matter of Jodhpur v Christ. Everyone in their own right has valid grounds for holding a moot of their choice!

I don't know why people are indulging in such debates. Firstly, as for BCI moot people who have a problem should contact BCI themselves and I am sure if you convince them they will agree. Use your time in something productive that ways instead of sitting like a lame duck and commenting
Also CCI n LKS along with Christ will ensure that the level of moot is excellent. My only question is in case NLU doesn't conduct a moot how does it harm anyone?

Point a) There is no question of losing the anti-trust moot as we very evidently are holding a moot of our own. And it only mentions LKS is not partnering, be rest assured some other organization would and having organized it successfully twice before it in no way will affect the standard.
Point b)Organizing a moot or not is absolutely the prerogative of an University no body including can dictate terms regarding that.

Winning a moot has far more points than organizing one. And the clause is no host institution can participate in their own moot. So hypothetically we gave given ourselves a chance at far more MPL points apart from the whole internal plans coinciding with the BCI moot. Definitely not bad. And well our Anti-trust moot is still on details to be out soon.

Most people commenting are non NLUites I guess coz they have not read the article properly. NLU has not lost out to Christ Law School, they just do not want to organise it. Why? Its their wish... They are not losing out in any way coz they dont participate in their own competitions... Cant compare a private university to an NLU, although Christ has improved leaps and bounds. Congrats to them for securing the moot.

Are you sure CCI is co-partnering Christ in hosting the Anti Trust moot? Or did you just assume? I ask this because for the last two years, CCI has been associated with the Anti trust moot hosted by NLUJ which evidently LKS was sponsoring... CCI has had nothing to do with LKS for the last two editions of the moot. Do clarify.

You need to understand firstly that parterning with a University for hosting a moot is a matter of long term prospects that would affect the way the associating firm is looked at in the market as well. LKS would not associate merely on certain relations which you seem to be aware of. I am unaware of what these relations are but that by itself cannot be a determining factor for LKS and CCI to partner with Christ.

I went through the criteria which was taken for NLUJ anti trust moot, and i believe that the Christ 3rd Anti-trust should be put in the same category as the NLUJ antitrust moot in the MPL list. I went to the christ college website and it is confirmed by them that CCI is a partner. Even if you look at the problem it mentions CCI, LKS and Christ as organisers.In the light of these criterions it should be placed along with the NLUJ anti-trust moot for the time being. And regarding the NLUJ anti-trust moot, we can change the position in the MPL list after they come out with the names of their sponsors, organisers etc. It will act as a boost for non-NLU colleges.
