NUJS Kolkata just behind third-ranked Jodhpur in the Mooting Premier League (MPL) 4.

NUJS Kolkata snatched back its third rank is only 3 points away from NLU Jodhpur’s third place in the Mooting Premier League (MPL) 4 after breaking into the semi-finals of the Tier 4 ELSA World rounds in Geneva, as NLSIU Bangalore yesterday bested NLU Jodhpur in the finals of the Manfred Lachs funding rounds.

Correction: The original story had erroneously reported that ELSA was a Tier 2 moot, wrongly putting NUJS into third place in the rankings. We regret the error.

NUJS had qualified for the ELSA worlds in March alongside Amity Delhi.

But while the latter didn’t make it out of the prelims in Geneva, NUJS’ Satchit Bhogle, Anviti Chaturvedi, Aanchal Dalal and Shruthi Anand were only knocked out in the semi finals and Chaturvedi bagged a best speaker in the prelims citation for the team.

Because the ELSA Tier 2 World Class Tier 4 Moot does not have an overall best speaker citation, the best speaker in the preliminary rounds prize attracts 20 8 points in the Mooting Premier League (MPL) 4 sponsored by Herbert Smith Freehills.

In addition, NUJS won 15 4 points for its semi final place, but keeping Kolkata just behind ICC Trial- and Commonwealth-scorer Jodhpur in the MPL rankings after Jodhpur picked up finalist points in the Manfred Lachs Indian funding rounds.

NLS triumphs at Manfred Lachs funding rounds again, Jodhpur holds on to third place

NLSIU Bangalore yesterday won the Manfred Lachs funding rounds against NLU Jodhpur at the qualification moot jointly organised by NLSIU and International Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

NLSIU is now in the offing to repeat its 2009 and 2012 wins at the Lachs World Rounds, if they can advance past the Asia Pacific rounds that will be held in June.

At Lachs’ funding rounds yesterday NUJS’ Joachim Saldanha won the best speaker citation. RMLNLU Lucknow was the other semi finalist.

NLSIU Bangalore’s Aniruddha Basu, Radhika Kapoor and Ashrutha Rai’s win and citation yesterday made the law school 15 points more comfortable in their MPL 4 lead, widening the gap to persistent follower NLU Delhi to almost 50 points. Speakers Basu and Kapoor also won the best speakers in the finals citation, Basu told Legally India.

Basu said: “What happens [At NLS] is that we have a really great support structure in place, also because we have been recent champions in this moot. So there is a great deal of guidance from seniors.”

He said that focusing on the “larger parameters in international law” and the “larger framework” was a perspective that has helped the law school perform well at Lachs. After NLSIU won both Lachs and Jessup world trophies this year, its moot court society convenor told Legally India that administrative and alumni support, coupled with rigorous internal rounds had contributed to the law school’s mooting success.

The best memorial citation was not declared at the competition yesterday, because the moot’s organisers select other Indian teams for the Asia Pacific rounds of Manfred Lachs based on their written submissions. The Asia pacific rounds are scheduled to be held on 1 and 2 June 2013.
