NLU Jodhpur and NLU Delhi qualified for the 18th Stetson Environmental Law Moot Court Competition’s world rounds yesterday as JGLS Sonepat, NUJS Kolkata and Amity Delhi made it to the international rounds of the Oxford Price Media Law Moot 2013-14.
Stetson North India qualifiers
Jodhpur beat Delhi in the finals of the North India regional qualifiers for the competition yesterday, and both law schools joined South India round finalists NLIU Bhopal and NLSIU Bangalore in making it to the Stetson world rounds.
NLU Jodhpur speakers Vinayak Panikkar and Rohan Tigadi and researcher Ishita Kumar clinched the win for the law school. Panikkar said: “The format of the competition is such that the memorial scores matter up to the preliminary rounds but if you are good with your memorial research – our memorial was the fourth best [in the competition] – you’ll do well.”
Amity Delhi won the best memorial citation at the qualifier while Abha Sharma from UILS Chandigarh was adjudged the best speaker.
NLU Jodhpur, NLU Delhi, NLIU and NLSIU will now compete internationally on 10 to 12 April 2014 at Stetson University, Florida.
Oxford Price South Asia qualifiers
JGLS beat NUJS in the finals of the South Asia qualifiers of the Oxford Price moot, while Amity Delhi bested NLSIU Bangalore in the international qualification round, thus emerging the third best team of the South Asia qualifiers and clinching the world rounds’ ticket.
JGLS speakers Mohan Krishnan and Bani Brar and researcher Ronak Talati made up the winning team. Krishnan said that while the quarter final rounds facing Nalsar were “the most engaging” for JGLS, the finals were particularly interesting with “three women judges factually picking holes in our arguments as opposed to generally citing authorities”. “The finals’ bench was more focussed on the consequences of passing such an order,” he added.
JGLS, NUJS and Amity will compete in the international rounds to be held at Oxford University in the UK on 2 – 4 April 2014.
NLU Delhi, the third-time host of the South Asia qualifiers for the Oxford Price moot, was asked to recuse itself before the start of the competition after allegations of having gained an unfair advantage over other teams surfaced. An internal inquiry committee is currently looking into the charges against the team that was representing the law school. Delhi won the world rounds of the moot in April. Since the team was disqualified before the competition, NLU Delhi has been awarded 2.5 organiser points for the moot.

I see NLUO with 5 points for semi-finals and 3 points for organising the India South Rounds. I am not sure about the inclusion of organiser points. Thanks in advance.

I think the only solution, which is internally consistent within the Tier system, would be to either downgrade Man Lachs world rounds to a lower tier, or to remove and downgrade the national and Asia qualifiers altogether from the process.
The problem with Lachs world is that only 4 teams take part in the world rounds. So even winning the moot, if the moot is judged on its own merits without taking account of qualifier rounds, is really only a competition between 4 teams and therefore every team has theoretically a 25% odds to win lots of points, which isn't on par with the number of teams you have to directly beat in say, Jessup or Vis... So if we don't have 25 points for semis in Lachs World, then the win of Lachs world should also be worth at least 25 points less.
Including the regional qualifiers Lachs World of course becomes of similar status, but then the regional qualifiers shouldn't attract any (or as many) MPL points in future. This would also solve the somewhat weird situation that a team gets qualifier points in Season 4, plus that same team then also wins points the following season for the World Rounds.
What say to removing the funding rounds from MPL completely, and perhaps downgrading the Asia rounds of Lachs by a Tier or Two (since the great performers there automatically also get points in the world rounds).
Or alternatively, not awarding any points to qualifying places in Asia but still allowing points for best memo and other citations?
