MPL: Symbi Pune continues onslaught, climbs to 2nd after RK Tankha • Christ now top 4 post-Chagla • 3 new moots

Symbi Pune climbs the MPL ranks, now in second place behind Nalsar
Symbi Pune climbs the MPL ranks, now in second place behind Nalsar

The second edition of the Justice R K Tankha Memorial International Moot Court Competition 2017 (after the moot went international in 2015) saw Symbiosis Pune and Amity Law School Delhi battle it out in the finals.

Symbi reinforced its continuing MPL dominance there as it not only won the moot, but also dethroned NUJS Kolkata from second position.

Nalsar Hyderabad and NLU Orissa were both semi-finalists in the moot, with Orissa also picking up five points for a best memo citation.

Amity also won the best speaker citation for 5 points.

The moot was hosted by NLIU Bhopal from 17 to 19 February and has ended with SLS Pune consolidating its total Mooting Premier League (MPL) points at 60, five points ahead of NUJS, and only a win-and-a-hop behind Nalsar Hyderabad, which expanded its lead slightly to 84 points.

Updates from Previous Moots

1. CLEA Indian National Rounds:

GNLU Gandhinagar had won the Indian National Rounds of the Commonwealth Moot hosted by VELS Chennai and has been awarded 10 points (Tier V), while UPES Dehradun was the runner-up (5), having defeated semi-finalists ULC Bangalore (3) on its way to the finals.

Modi University, Rajasthan bagged the best speaker citation (5).

We request other citation holders to please get back to us with the results as the organisers have not gotten back to us in spite of repeated requested to share the results.

2. MC Chagla Moot:

SLCU Bengaluru was a semi-finalist and Adheesh Agarwal from SLCU also won the best researcher at the MC Chagla Memorial Moot Court Competition 2016, leading to an addition of 8 MPL points to the University’s MPL kitty.

Post this, SLCU is tied in 4th position with NLU Jodhpur, as NLIU Bhopal is a point away in 6th position.

We still await results for the other semi-finalist at the moot and request the citation holding team to inform us about the same asap.

The MPL table has been updated accordingly with these additions.

Addition of 3 new MPL moots in tier 5

In light of not having received any substantial criticism against their inclusion, we have included the following moots in Tier 5 of the MPL 7:

 • NLU Odisha’s flagship Maritime Law Moot,
 • RMLNLU’s International Media Law Moot, and
 • JGLS’ Technology and Policy Law Moot.

The NUSRL’s Trial Advocacy Moot, has not been included as of now, as we await an official release of the moot brochure and in light of a current lack of information regarding its organisation.

How can you arbitrarily add JGLS Moot? The technology and policy law moot is having its first edition. Atleast let 2 editions happen before inducting a moot.

Hello 'Veteran Mooter', This will be the second edition of the JGLS moot. It has better judges than most national moots. I don't see any reason why it should not be included. Rather moots like KLA & Nani Palkhivala and several others which are old but have very poor level of judging should be excluded

Come what may, the moot is at its nascent stage. Shady teams from tier 2 and tier 3 level colleges are winning this moot court.
There is no rationale in making it a tiered moot.

These days, most moots are judged by associates of law firms in the prelim rounds and judges in advanced rounds. One can't make them JlT.

KIIT moot sees better participation, quality wise and is judged by a panel of sitting supreme court justices. Makes more sense to include that moot rather than Jgls tech or nluo maritime.

I am not aware of the RML scc media moot. However, please reconsider the decision of including so many moots into the tiered category as it would make MpL a joke.

Shady teams? GNLU and ILS were finalists. NLU-D won best memo, how are any of these colleges shady? JGLS finals was judged by ex-CCI members, Justice B.N Srikirshna , Shamnad Basheer among others.

Please let at least 5 editions happen to see the sustainability of the moot. NUALS securities had senior corp partners as judges. Good judges is no criteria to have a moot as tiered. There should be a number of factors which need to be taken into consideration. I hope you find sense in these arguments and reconsider your decision. MPL will not be MPL otherwise.

DMH Best Researcher points = Jessup Nationals Win points? Doesn't sound legit.

NUJS reached the quarter-finals of DMH. Shouldn't they get points for that?

Dear Kian,

This is to bring to your notice that GWU's speaker Kyle won the best speaker (prelims) and not the best speaker (finals)in GIMC. The former is not considered in the MPL. However, the latter award was won by NALSAR's first speaker in the Moot.

I would strongly recommend you to look into this and make your corrections.

Best regards,
GIMC Participant

I find it a little surprising that ELSA's results have not been reflected yet, given that the Asia-Pac Round ended ten days back. For as long as I can remember, MPL did allocate points for achievements at ELSA. Moreover, your previous article concluded with this paragraph:

"The 15th Surana and Surana National Corporate Law Moot 2017 and the Asia Pacific Rounds of the 15th ELSA WTO International Trade Law Moot 2017 are on our coverage radar next weekend."

For that matter, even the Surana Corp results haven't been updated. Kindly do the needful, admin.
