[[Nalsar Hyderabad]] defeated [[School of Excellence in Law (SOEL) Chennai|SOEL Chennai]] at the 27^th [[Bar Council of India International Law Moot Court Competition|Bar Council of India Moot]] hosted by Nirma University at Ahmedabad. [[CUSAT Kochi|School of Legal Studies, CUSAT Kochi]] got past [[ILS Pune]] in the final rounds of the [[Surana & Surana International Technology Law Moot]].

The BCI win helped Nalsar move up five places from the 10^th to the 5^th position in the [[MPL 3 season standings]]. In the process, Nalsar went past [[NUJS Kolkata]] and ILS Pune. [[NLU Delhi]] finished semifinalists at both the moots and ended with 104 points in the second position, two points ahead of [[NLU Jodhpur]] which finished semi-finalist at the Suarana Tech moot.

Nalsar completed a hat trick of BCI moot wins after it beat SOEL Chennai in the final rounds. NLIU Bhopal and NLU Delhi finished semifinalists at the moot. R. Diwagar from SOEL and Malavika Prasad from Nalsar bagged the best speaker awards for the male and female categories respectively. This Tier 3 moot is the first of the two BCI moots that are being organised this season as a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the BCI.

Speakers Malavika Prasad and Charitha Shashiraj along with researcher Devdeep Ghosh helped Nalsar post its second moot win this season. Best female speaker Prasad said that the team enjoyed working on four moot problems and surviving up till the end. “There were a few drafting discrepancies in the problems, but overall it was a nice experience. The judging was fantastic throughout the moot. In the final rounds, we had sitting judges on the bench. Usually such judges never hit you with a lot of questions, but this bench kept us engaging and had a lot of questions for us.”

Prasad said that out of the four problems on criminal law, corporate law, environmental law and constitutional & election law, the corporate law problem was the most difficult one to crack. “We had good competition throughout the moot. NLIU Bhopal was our toughest opponent in the semifinal round.” On Nalsar’s chances of staging a comeback in the second half of this mooting season, Prasad was quite discreet. “Luck plays a huge factor in most of the moots. The opponents you face in each round, the bench you have – all these things matter. I don’t think you can really predict the outcome of moots.” Nalsar defeated NLSIU Bangalore and ILS Pune in the final rounds of the BCI moots in the last two MPL seasons.

Prasad also appreciated the host law school’s hospitality during the moot. “Nirma University deserves credit for their wonderful organisation of the moot.” Devanshi Popat, student organiser from Nirma University confirmed that 38 teams participated in the moot.

“BCI was very supportive throughout the moot. The final bench included a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Gyansudha Mishra along with retired judges Justice BN Srikrishna and Justice MB Shah. This was the first time in the history of the BCI moot that a sitting judge of the Supreme Court judged the final rounds.” Nirma Univeristy bagged MPL organiser points as they did not participate in the moot.

Surprisingly, there was no award for the best memorandum at the moot. The second BCI moot this season will be hosted at NLU Delhi next month.

Surana Int’l Tech moot: CUSAT Kochi v ILS Pune

CUSAT Kochi got past ILS Pune in the final rounds of the Surana & Surana International Technology Law Moot. NLU Jodhpur and NLU Delhi finished semifinalists at the moot. Annie Mampilly from CUSAT Kochi won the best speaker award and [[RGNUL Patiala]] took home the best memorandum award.

The CUSAT Kochi team consisted of speakers Annie Mampilly and Indulekha Joseph and researcher Sangeeth K. Best speaker Mampilly was excited about the moot win. “This is the first time that CUSAT has gone past the quarters and won a moot court competition.” She mentioned that the team’s researcher was an engineering student who helped with the technical aspects in the problem.

Mampilly said that in the prelim rounds, the judges did not grill the students a lot. “The judges in the semis were well versed with the technical aspects of the problem. As the moot progressed, the rounds became tougher. The round against CLC Delhi in the quarterfinals was the most difficult round.”

The moot was organised by Surana & Surana International Attorneys in collaboration with Symbiosis Law School, Pune. Varun Tripathi, a student organiser from Symbiosis said that 32 teams participated in the moot. “As a team, we enjoyed organising the moot and we had a great experience interacting with participants from all over the country.” Symbiosis Law School bagged MPL organiser points as they did not participate in the moot. To augment technology related research, the participant teams were allowed to have one science / engineering student in the team.
