Amity Moot

[[Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Government Law College Chennai | Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai]] entered the MPL Season 2 with a win against [[NLU Jodhpur]] in the finals of the [[Amity Moot Court Competition]]. It now stands at the joint 20th position.

[[Nalsar Hyderabad]] and [[Army Institute of Law, Mohali]] were the semi-finalists. Nalsar also won the best memorandum award, grabbing a total of 12 points from the competition.

With 148 points, Nalsar continues to lead the [[MPL Standings]] while [[NUJS Kolkata]] is at second position with 119 points.

NLU-J’s Aparna Gaur earned her college 8 more points (taking the tally to 16) by winning the best researcher award. The best speaker award was won by Urvashi Mishra of [[ILS Law College Pune]].

Gunjan Arora and Surabhi Iyer, student organizers of the moot, confirmed the results and said that 24 teams participated in the moot. The problem was based on public international law, they added.

ELSA-WTO

Although no Indian team advanced to the later rounds of the [[ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law, Asian rounds | ELSA Moot Asia]], which is a Tier 5 international moot, NLU-J earned 10 big points at the competition with two prestigious awards: the Shing-yi Peng award for Best Overall Written Submissions and the award for Best Written Submissions for the Complainant.

[[GNLU Gandhinagar]] was the other college to earn MPL points at the competition, receiving 3 points with an honourable mention in the Best Overall Written Submissions.

Earning a total of 26 points during the last week, NLU-J has jumped from 9th to 4th position in the [[MPL Standings]] with 86.5 points, only half a point ahead of [[NLSIU Bangalore]] with 86 points.

The ELSA-WTO organisers were not available for comment.

Allen & Overy is the sponsor of the MPL 2 and is hosting an international finance and corporate course at Nalsar Hyderabad between 4 and 8 July.

just an observation, NALSAR has 6 MOOT WINS, whereas the next best is NUJS with 3 Wins. Also, Nalsar has got maximum points frm tier 3 moots this year...which is an improvement as opposed to last year where they scored maximum in tier 4. Way To GO NALSAR. :D

Just an observation again, as opposed to last year performance of NUJS a lot lot better. Last year, at this point of time it was somewhere at 14-15th spot with 45 points(approx.).

@3 It doesn't matter if your law school has won more moots or is on the verge of winning MPL 2. It is NUJS that has improved or has been proactive. You do not question them. Their improvement is the issue not your being the best. If you are ranked ahead of them then it's India Today's fault, next it shall be LI's fault wrt to MPL 2.However, their performance is 'proactiveness'. What worries me is the performance of NLS. What's happening guys?

Mr. Kian,

Why the results of international rounds of Air Law moot is not being updated. NLU Delhi won best speaker and was ranked third and this moot is to be included in best of the rest.

I guess, when everybody is talking abt their growth, NLU Delhi from last MPL, has grown 10 times for now, with Lachs, Jessup, and NLS moot pending. Furthermore, NLU Delhi won Law Asia which was not counted by MPL.

A great performance to be witnessed in coming time....

12: Yes, we have been informed that NLU-D has won the best speaker award. However, we are awaiting an official confirmation from the organisers. Generally, in the case of international moots the organisers take more time in replying as compared to the national ones. Hence the delay. We'll put up the story as soon as the confirmation comes in.

15: Nalsar had 134 points prior to the Amity Moot. At Amity, it was semi-finalist and won the best memorandum award. Thus, earned 4 and 12 points respectively (12 in total). Consequently, it now stands at 146 points. Do let us know if you have spotted anything contrary to the above-stated!

Thanks!

Um, if it earned 4 and 12 RESPECTIVELY, that would add up to a total of 16 points.
NOT a total of 12 points.

Congrats to LI on such extensive coverage of Indian mooting scene, the reporting could be broader if the entire result rolls of the moots are declared (for example name all participant schools and their ranks or elimination stage). It would add to the transparency and give an idea as to which law schools participated in which moot competitions and how they fared even if they did not make to the finals/semis.
sanjay.khan.nagra 16 Mar 2011, 16:31

Thanks!

Thats correct. Such a list for each moot would be very helpful in determining the overall mooting performance of a particular college.

We do ask for all the details pertaining to the moot. In fact, during the initial stages of MPL2 we did want to put up those lists with each moot story. However, problem arises when the results are confirmed on phone/orally/by text or when the organizers confirm the results while they are caught up with the post moot work (which is the case most of the times!).

Thus, as a substitute, we are trying to incorporate as much details of a moot as possible in the wiki page of that moot (Each moot in MPL has a separate wiki page!). Although it might take some time, but once everything is in place one can find these details there. And being a separate page dedicated to one particular moot, it will contain details on yearly basis. Thus, one can also observe the relative progress of the moot there.

Let us know if you have any thoughts on this.

Sanjay Khan

By now I'd thought, I would see just the NLU-J people going ga ga over the win. But damn, they are mature people indeed. Letting it go just like another moot.
But astonished to see, NUJS and NLU Delhi still trying to show their supremacy.
NLSIU, Nalsar and NLU-J are definitely in a different league altogether when it comes to maturity and being subtle about their respective accomplishments. Its better than blowing your own trumpet!
But congrats Ambedkar and NLU-J for the moot!

First thanks for replying back to my post.
well you have made a valid point that organisers are quite 'busy' in post moot days to provide detailed results, and that as most of the MPL news is 'live' LI has to do with whatever imp news (usually the winners, runners up and some other bits) comes to it by the organisers.
While having more extensive info database at the wiki is highly commendable but it would be also great if a tabular chart could be given with every MPL live moot page/ MPL individual moot page which would contain the names of the participant law schools and their progress or other achievements in that moot. if the moot organisers contact LI beforehand then getting the names of participating colleges shouldnt be a big problem and once the results are declared the 'activist/vociferous' readership of LI moot columns would provide enough info on the positions of teams until 'official' results are declared.
Further with something like MPL, which like me most of law school alum with agree is quite unique in India, LI can persuade the moot organisers to be more cooperative on issues of media releases and providing quick uptodate info. MPL has gained quite high popularity among at least some section of law school students and I am sure if the moot organisers are provided subtle hints that MPL would not cover their moots unless timely information are provided on the progress or elimination of teams then, the organisers would be happy to comply. I am not trying to say that one party is in an advantageous position what I am trying to get through is that there is a symbiotic relationship, no moot organiser wants to have a competition where only few local colleges arrive and the competition is over in few hours with prizes distributed in an empty classroom.
Thus while i welcome extensive info on wiki pages I am in favor of tabular elimination or progress sheet on MPL moot news pages.

what makes you think NLS Never turned up for moots this year? Thats purely baseless. They turned up for RLC MOOT(Which they won), thats a relatively less prestigious moot. The MPL Points table tells us that NLS Participated in lotta moots and even got points for being the semifinalists, best memo, best speaker etc. so dont belittle the achievements of nalsar and nujs by saying they got it coz nls didnt participate. thats sheer shit. moreover, you are talking abt this year, whats ur excuse abt last year? Last year also, NALSAR won MPL with a huuuuge margin. Now please dont be audacious enough to say that last year also nalsar won coz nls "didnt participate" :P

Thats right! A tabular representation of all the eliminations at a moot would indeed be quite useful. Like I said, we do share the same concern. We'll surely give it a shot for the main stories.

Thanks!

Most of these people masquerading as Nalsarites are in all probablity not from Nalsar. It is a growing trend on LI to pretend you are from one law school and prove your own petty point. Nalsar has its own achievements so does NLS. Bashing each other on LI is seriously not a great activity for both the student frats. And I believe people from these two law schools seldom do that. More often than not it is people from other law school who trigger a slug fest and then enjoy the fighting.

I pity your lack of knowledge. NALSAR AND ILS HAVE QUALIFIED THIS YEAR AS WELL FOR DC ROUNDS. Needless to mention, NLS didnt. And stop bragging abt sth which happened 12 years back! Nalsar was only a few months old then. Live in the present. And just for record, NALSAR was the third best team in the DC rounds last year. I would consider that a more recent achievement. And just in case you dont know, in a span of 8 years since its first batch passed out, nalsar has reached the SEMIFINALS TWICE in the international rounds. Sth which NLS couldnt accomplish. And also, it may be interesting to note that the competition in 2010 was much much stiff than in 1999.

NLS and NALSAR both are IIMs of Law. People if you are truly from law schools, stop fighting like kids. We all know how much excahnge of information is there between students, sometimes informally. We all do have fun when we visit each other campus, and hospitality is at high. I dont know why on LI, people go mad. Just keep going, if you want to prove your worth, if any law school wants to prove its worth, students should prove worth of doing law, not winning moots, and staying ahead. Law is still a cheap profession in common minds. Its a dry profession in beginning as per people. MBAs and Engg is much better option, all this common mind perception need to be proved incorrect by the students of leadings law school, and such a stupid debate is resulting in ego clash. Look beyond NLS, Nalsarites, and Look beyond staying on top, NLS students. Move ahead. Both of these colleges are only well known colleges of law to non-law students, and such a behaviour doesnot deserve respect.

One point to be noted. NLS has been able to get a name in the legal world, because for a long period of time it has remained the only national law university in the country and that is one of the main reason why it has name till today. But as the time has passed, other national law colleges like NALSAR, NUJS, NLUJ have also emerged and have been performing well, and there are many things which have been achieved by these colleges but not by NLS. Coming to the recruitment scenario, earlier NLS was the only option for law firms, Companies or anyone who want law graduated, but as the time has passed scenario had changed. Now good law firms do not recruit as much students as it used to recruit earlier. From the statistics, it is clear that NLS, NALSAR and NUJS were equally able to place their students. It is quite obvious that one would prefer an experienced in any area, when you search for a doctor you would prefer an experienced one than a young one

http://barandbench.com/brief/9/809/377-choose-law-firms-209-choose-in-house-and-98-choose-lit-career-paths-of-nlsiu-nalsar-and-nujs-graduates

Talking about admission in foreign universities, students all of these three NLUs were able to get admission in various foreign universities. NLS - 3 , NALSAR - 5, NUJS - 15 ( for last session. refer above link )

Point is that, as the time would pass other National Law Universities would also emerge as one of the best places to study law in India like NLU Delhi, GNLU and some others. And competition would get tougher. There are many things which have been achieved by some national law universities but not by others. All in all, Good students are everywhere and I am quite sure that these good students who get a name to their college do not jump into these useless fights. These are those students, who do not have anything else do so think that "Why not insult other clg".

@63 - Please dont use the name of IIMs and IITs here. The kind of unity which these students have among themselves ins wonderful. Whether it is an IIT Madaras student, or IIT Bombay Student, or IIT kanpur Students. They consider each other as a family.

And opposite to this ( I am talking about useless persons who are present in every clg) whether it is an NLS Student, or a NALSARite, or a Noojiee, or NLUJ Student, or NLU Delhi Student, they just know one thing " My College is better than you".

So please avoid using the name of IIts and IIMs.....

PS: I am also a student of one of these colleges.

Listen Nalsar ki bacche!
My Boys, Let me tell you I have ordered for more Sherman tanks( since they are lighter than Pattons).Get Off this forum and study for your mid sems otherwise I shall ground you. Also next time I shall talk about the middle east crisis since Nalsar Proximate is going global. We have proved our worth and shall do so under my leadership and reach the pinnacle of success like the Indian Army. I am brave. You need to know how to die. Die for a cause. Already my best paratroopers and Spl. Ops kids are doing a good job at the MPL 2. My senior officers from HQ (read 5th year) are being sent to Ivy Leagues as part of the Military Intelligence. And Bangalore? Where is that? It's all Madras.

I don't understand why every post on LI has to be turned into a NALSAR v. NLS v. NUJS slugfest. The pertinent matter of discussion in the relevant article is NLU-J doing so well and I think for once we should focus on them and give them due credit for their achievements. They have been doing as well as any other Law School on in the country and their stoic composed attitude of letting their actions speak for them should indeed be lauded!!! Well done guys hope you continue the good work!! :-)

@72 - Relax dude. Dnt get offended if someone has made a comparison of NUJS with NALSAR ( and that is your point here ), but generally it is NALSAR v. NUJS , instead of NLS v. NALSAR. Chill out! I have seen that at many places. And as truly said by @ 69 NLU Jodhpur always rocks!

How feudal are we in our mindset?? We just want to typecast excellence and achievement and limit it to a certain section of the legal fraternity. It's time we grow up and acknowledge the fact that ours is a dynamic fraternity and no single law school can claim to be the suzerain of excellence whenever "other" law schools do well we should be humble enough to appreciate their efforts instead of trying to assuage our inflated egos by indulging in a pompous monologue about the achievements of our college!!!

@72 - Dude, He said correctly, he is not talking about this particular post. But several post on LI. And in that context @ 69 is absolutely correct. I wish LI could serve as some constructive platform for Law Students, instead of become a Law School Fight Ring

I do not want to be a spoiler in this 'my college better than yours' match, but pray how does getting into oxford or columbia signify great achievement. If one is in top 10% of the class (any law school) with decent extracurricular achievements and some good references and of course bag full of money (total cost around 15-18 lakhs INR pa at oxford) then oxford or columbia is no big deal. Having said this however I would like to reiterate that scholarships are different ball game, so if you want to fight it out give stats on scholarships not admissions !!!

NLS v. NALSAR had been an old debate now. NLS is class apart, and mooting is just one parameter to judge a college. To be very honest, majority(around 95%) of persons who are blaming NLS to be something or something wanted to go to NLSIU. So please Chill Out! And Refer to above links for more details.

And Man I personally feel NUJS is good in many things which no other clg is. Not in all, as every clg has its own importance.

@80 - Chill Out Buddy! This is the only time when they get chance to come out from their hole. When it would come to placements, academics or any other activity than moots and all that stuff they would take excuse of being interested in PSUs or something else.

We all know that NLS is still the best! comments from few people couldnot take its credibility

LOL! You guys are funny yaar! We are the best- we are the best! Self proclaimed best law school? eh? let ur achievements do the talking. stop banking upon the perceptual greatness you enjoy, start achieving or u'll lost that perceptual greatness as well. and someone talked abt rhodes scholars, right? just for record, nalsar has rhodes scholars frm both 2010 and 2011 batch, just like NLS. (Noojies, you dont even talk abt rhodes scholarships please, coz u have none). Placements, nalsar had BETTER placements than NLS last year and this year as well. and MOOTS? that everyone knows who is the best. So talk about reality. Talk abt present. Dont tell us how many rhodes scholars you had in the past and what moot you won in 1999. Okay? Your alumni were awesome. They did bring good name to ur institution. Its high time you stopped basking in their glory and do sth on your own.

Btw, The "still" in the last line of your comment says it all.
Anonymous guest 20 Mar 2011, 02:17

@83 - But facts doesn't support you buddy in placements. Last years

Law Firms -

NLS - 31
NALSAR - 22
NUJS - 38

Companies/PSUs As pointed out by @ 82

NLS - 16
NALSAR - 21
NUJS - 13

Foreign Firms -

NLS - 9 (Huge difference here man, have a look)
NALSAR - 4
NUJS -3

Foreign Universities -

NLS - 3
NALSAR - 5
NUJS - 15

Others -
NLS - 0
NALSAR - 0
NUJS - 3

Your argument here fails buddy. Accepted NALSAR is the best in mooting, but not in other things. that is why start basking only at this time. Please show your in those threads please.

Facts support that placement of NALSAR was neither better than NLS( that is a far fetched) nor than NUJS.

Please, if anyone want to add further, substantiate your arguments with facts. But I know that wont help you, so some vague arguments would be presented. never Mind

@82 -

Yes Man, It indeed shows it all.

with the "still" point, you got it all wrong. and that was not i wanted to say. the fact that you had to use the word "still" clearly shows that you urself have doubts abt the reputation of ur college now.

about placements, first point. the analysis consider 53 nalsar students, 58 nls students and 79 Nujs students..so this shud be kept in mind before considering comment #85. next point. its not about the top foreign contracts, its about the average salary. NALSAR's average salary was higher than that of nls and guess that matters. this was also considered by outlook when in their rankings they gave a higher placement score to nalsar than nls. in fact it was the highest. mr #85, you talked only abt placements. what "other things" are you talking about? please elaborate.

@86 - I am not an NLS Student, but I adore it and for a fact I know it is the best. And dnt lie me that you didn't want to go there. You are at NALSAR just because you couldnt make into NLS. Isnt it?

Just for record, let me tell you. My rank was within 25. And I CHOSE NALSAR. You Can check the 2009 clat results if you want to. There were 14 Students who chose NALSAR over NLS in my batch. and dude, dnt lie, you are frm NLS.

nujs and nalsar collaborated this year to hold the first indian pre-moot. nlu delhi and nujs collaborated in holding the national round of the oxford media law moot. a student of nlu j is the coach to nujs jessup team.

i think it would be far more productive if we stop the bitchfest and moved on to useful collaborations like this.. remember the prisoners' dilemma

@88 - But this year there were just two people who opted NALSAR over NLS. Isnt it? AIR 14 and another somewhere 54. And two opted for NUJS AIR 8 and AIR 31.
And there are only a few people, majority goes to NLS. And Had I been from NLS, then I must have accepted it.

@92. I talked abt perceptual greatness. people PERCEIVE NLS to be the best, coz it has been in existence for 24 years now. but facts speak otherwise. a law aspirant obviously goes with the general perception and prefers nls over nalsar. but what difference does it make? a difference of one mark in an exam like clat doesnt make anyone less smarter. and in arguendo, even if we agree that nalsar students are NLS-REJECTS and less smart, then i think its the awesomeness of nalsar that it still outshines nls in terms of achievements.

and you dont worry abt the top rankers choosing nls over nalsar. perception doesnt take much time to change. :-)
