The 12^th Commonwealth Moot was held as a part of the 17^th Commonwealth Law Conference which took place at Hyderabad from 5^th to 9^th February. After initial selections in various regions, twelve commonwealth teams vied in the international rounds with the team from Sri Lanka emerging victorious after beating Nigeria in the finals. India and Canada were the semifinalists in the moot. Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, Trinidad and Tobago and Uganda were among the other teams that participated in the moot. The moot problem was based on public international law.

The young team of NUJS consisted of first year Payoshi Roy, who won the best orator award along with Nayantara Ranganathan and Puneeth Ganapathy of the second year. Roy told Legally India that her first moot was a lot of fun. “The judges were looking for some understanding and jurisprudence behind the law you knew and not how much law you knew”, she said. She added that the teams from Nigeria, South Africa and Sri Lanka were really good.

Santhaan Krishnan, an organizer of the Moot confirmed the results and said that they had roped in personalities who attended the conference to judge the moot. He also said that the next Commonwealth Moot will be held at Cape Town.

Paris ICC Mediation

Meanwhile, [[GNLU Gandhinagar|Gujarat National Law University]] picked up the ‘Special Award for the Team Which Best Acknowledged Cultural Differences’ at the 6^th [[ICC International Commercial Mediation Moot Court Competition, Paris|ICC Mediation Moot]] in Paris.

[[NLU Jodhpur]] reached the quarterfinals of the competition. GNLU gains three points for the honourable mention in this Tier 5 international moot, where no points are available under the rules for making it to the last eight.

Five Indian teams including [[NLSIU Bangalore]], [[NLIU Bhopal]] and [[School of Excellence in Law (SOEL) Chennai|SOEL Chennai]] contested with a record-breaking 53 other teams from 26 different countries. Organisers Mathilde Vital Durand and Hannah Tümpel confirmed the results and said that India has always been a country well-represented in the cmpetition since its creation. The GNLU team consisted of Tuhin Sharma, Mansi Tewari, Prateeti Gaur and Tarang Shashishekhar and the NLU Jodhpur team consisted of Aditya Gupte, Varsha Nair, Saumya Sharma and coach Srinivas Vishven.

GNLU’s Gaur said that they faced teams from Serbia, Lebanon, Israel and Switzerland in the preliminary rounds. “The art of listening carefully before speaking paid off. We listened to what the other party had to say and then answered. It requires some patience and you have to be cordial and polite. Even in tough situations we were polite”. She hopes that mediation would really find its launching pad in India because of the world becoming smaller and the many international commercial prospects in India.

With the [[Bar Council of India International Law Moot Court Competition|BCI Moot]], [[DM Harish Memorial Government Law College International Moot Court Competition|DM Harish Moot]] and four other moots lined up this weekend, the MPL Standings are set to get ruffled.
