NUJS trumps Nalsar in NLU Jodhpur Antitrust moot; Nalsar bests NLSIU in the Vis pre-moot

[[NUJS Kolkata]] defeated [[Nalsar Hyderabad]] in the final rounds of the [[NLU Antitrust Moot Court Competition|NLU Antitrust moot]]. [[GNLU Gandhinagar]] and [[NLIU Bhopal]] finished semifinalists in the moot.

While Radhika from NLIU Bhopal bagged the best speaker award, Nalsar took home the best memorandum award. Abhijnan Jha from NUJS won the best researcher award.

The NUJS team consisted of speakers Nihal Joseph and Karan Talwar along with reseracher Abhijnan Jha. Joseph said that the team had a great overall experience. “It was a very good moot. The problem was extremely well-drafted. We had good judges and it was well organised.” Joseph added that the judges were extremely good throughout the moot. “We learnt a lot from the judges as the moot progressed. Their feedback was extremely helpful.”

He noted that the quarterfinal round against [[RMLNLU Lucknow]] and the finals against Nalsar were quite close, with the moot problem spanning a number of antitrust issues such as abuse of dominance, exclusive supply agreement and mergers. “We prepared for around three weeks. The problem was really tough. There were a lot of new issues.”

Joseph was also optimistic of NUJS Kolkata’s chances of making a late comeback in this mooting season. “I’m sure our teams will do well in the international moots.”

The moot was organised by [[NLU Jodhpur]] in association with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co. Pranay Bagdi, Convener of the NLU Jodhpur Moot Court Committee confirmed the results and stated that 31 teams participated in the moot.

NLU Jodhpur was awarded MPL organiser points, as it did not participate in the moot.

This was NUJS Kolkata’s second antitrust moot win in this season, as it had also emerged victorious in the SLCU – CCI – LKS Antitrust moot held in January.

Indian Vis Pre-moot – Nalsar beats NLSIU Bangalore

The Vis teams from Nalsar defeated their [[NLSIU Bangalore]] counterparts in the final rounds of the second Indian pre moot for the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration moot.

GNLU Gandhinagar and NLU Delhi finished semifinalists in the competition. Kunal Chaturvedi from GNLU was awarded the best speaker in the pre-moot.

The moot acted as a practice session for the teams participating in the [[Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, Vienna|Willem C. Vis Moot, Vienna]] and the [[Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot, Hong Kong|Willem C. Vis (East), Hong Kong]], which are premium Tier 1 moots in the MPL.

The premoot winning team consisted of speakers Jagdish Menezes and Ishita Bhardwaj along with researcher Ridhi Kabra who will represent Nalsar in the Vis Vienna moot this season. Menezes said: “The judging was great throughout the competition. We had a stud bench for the finals.”

A majority of ex-Vis mooters such as Mithun Thanks, Shraddha Deshmukh and Sneha Jain along with Rhodes scholar V Niranjan and arbitration author Anirudh Krishnan adjudged the final rounds of the pre-moot.

Menezes opined highly on the standards of the other teams which participated in the premoot. “They were very good. The judges also mentioned that the teams were good. We won by the skin of our teeth in the final rounds. It was very close.”

Menezes also stated that the Nalsar Vis team will not be doing any other pre-moot. “We will not be able to participate in other premoots mainly because of financial constraints. Vis is a very expensive moot and you have to pay for everything. It is not very cheap and that is why the Indian pre-moot is very important.”

Menezes said that the pre-moot experience gave his team a good chance to see what the other teams are doing. “I’ve done Manfred Lachs earlier where you have an India qualifying round in which you can see what other teams are doing. In Vis Vienna, you have around 287 teams participating out of which only 64 teams make the first cut. That is really scary because even if you win all your 4 prelim rounds, you may not make it. You have to be absolutely flawless. You have to win by huge margins to break at Vis.”

Menezes mentioned that the pre-moot win was quite a satisfying experience for him as this was his first arbitration moot. “We are not doing well in the MPL this season and we have to count on big international moots to make a comeback.”

The preemoot was jointly organised by Nalsar Hyderabad and NUJS Kolkata. Organiser Puneeth Nagaraj confirmed the results and said that 10 teams participated in the premoot. It was sponsored by Bharucha & Partners.

Unlike last year’s Vis pre-moot, there was no prize money awarded to the winning team this time.

Note: Amity moot results will be published shortly.

Good show NLUJ.. Given the quality of problems framed, quality of judges, repute of the law firms associated with it and an increasing number of participating teams every year, LI should consider upgrading this moot to Tier 4 from next year.

Why is there no coverage for the amity moot? Just because it is organised by a non-nlu? The scores have been added, although there's no write up about the same. The amity moot has consistently been one of the best consti moots in the country. Why the step motherly treatment?

We got the Amity Moot results just after this story went up and it's now written and done. But we'd just spacing it out a little bit so there's not too much mooting overload. Will be up shortly... :)

Kian, Esha Goel from GNLU also bagged the second best speaker in the VIS Premoot. Why hasn't that found a mention in this article ?
