Can CLAT be held in August under latest lockdown orders, as univs to remain shut until at least 31 August?

Unlock, relock
Unlock, relock

According to to the latest notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs to try and get life back to a semblance of normality, which lifts the night curfew from 1 August amongst other things, also states that colleges and educational institutions would remain (physically) closed until 31 August.

What is not clear is whether the physical Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) scheduled on 22 August will be included in the restriction or not.

Section 1(i) and (v) state that all activities outside containment zones are permitted, except:

(i) schools, colleges, educational and coaching institutions will remain closed till 31st August, 2020. Online/ distance learning shall continue to be permitted and shall be encouraged…

(v) … academic … functions and other large congregations

Whether a mass exam fall under “educational” or “coaching institution” or “academic… functions” or “large congregations” is anyone’s guess at this point but it does not look good.

Update 23:17: Thanks to a commenter below for pointing out “academic functions”, specifically.

We understand that the CLAT convenor vice-chancellors (VCs) are scheduled to meet tomorrow in any case, to discuss progress and plans for the exams in the ever-evolving pandemic.

Technically, the universities are only supposed to be closed for classes. The administrative offices are mostly staying open anyway. That is all that's needed for CLAT.

1(v) clearly forbids academic congregations, so a physical exam is fully out of the question.

If Ram Mandir can be inaugurated in violation of this, so can CLAT be held I guess.

Ram Mandir is not in violation of this because the guidelines permit religious places to be open.

A. Religious congregations are not allowed.
B. Senior citizens aren't supposed to be out. That includes most invitees like the PM.

Of course. Guidelines also allow all the people who would come together for this folly to go ahead, get infected and keep spreading the infection throughout the country. The fact that the one of the main officials for the ceremony got detected with the virus is not an ill-omen at all.

Can we not wait till December and conduct the exam thereafter ? Just a delay of six months would not destroy the students...safety should be the utmost concern at the moment !

Wish people understand the value of life and be pragmatic.

Wouldn't it be better to conduct online remote proctored exams? Even if just for this batch of students.

If we remove a semester from syllabus, how do you propose we move forward? Would they just not study contract law( usually taught in 1st sem)?

I still believe that an AI-Proctored exam will be better. It will still be better to have a batch of Technologically advanced 'cheaters' (if it's possible not to spot them) rather than snapping the fingers like thanos and killing an entire batch.

For the umpteenth time, a lot of applicants do not have a functional advanced enough computer system at home, nor a sufficiently strong and stable Internet connection to appear for online competitive exams from home. If you were not wrapped in privilege handed down to you by your parents and/or ancestors, you would have realised that already and stopped making such stupid arguments. Only 5000 plus applicants sat for LSAT from home. While 10000 plus had originally applied. I myself reside in a metro city and despite having the money to spend, can't get a stable enough internet connection for me to take part in my classes regularly throughout their duration without getting disconnected every once in a while. At times, I wonder if people have taken jokes like India becoming a developed country by 2020 too seriously.

Do your realise that if the exam is conducted in December then the session is going to start in january at the earliest. The 2021 batch would be giving the exam in mid may implying that that there would be two batches of first years in a college with two different schedules. Moreover the private univs are conducting their exams and starting with online classes. So if a student doesnt make it in clat, he/she looses the first year in such private univs and if he/she pays for the classes and then clears clat his/her parents loose close 2 lakh atleast. This kind of solution doesnt benefit anyone, its only counter productive in the long run.

Holding the CLAT in any centre will be in violation of the MInistry of Home Affairs directions. There is no way, CLAT can be held and nothing is surprising. Everybody knew that any exam of this kind cannot be held in any centre. The only option any university in India had was to do a AI-Enable and Remote Proctored examination, which can be completed at home. Jindal took the right call at the right time and made a smart decision to go with the LSAT. That was a visionary and responsible decision. Unfortunately, other NLUs have an ostrich-type mindset with high degree of arrogance and obstinacy. This has now, sadly caused misery to the aspiring students of law. Every NLU has to learn institutional governance from Jindal. I have never been to Jindal, but all what I hear about it including from the students, faculty and the alumni has been simply terrific. But beyond that when I see what is happening to NLUs through the CLAT disaster only shows the institutional crisis that prevails in NLUs!
Guest 29 Jul 2020, 18:55

You mean Jindal sends your troll tax directly to your account so that you don't have to visit? Which is why you have been posting the same [...] across all the posts? Let's make one thing clear, nobody cares about who got through to Jindal. [...] They get the fees nonetheless and they have got no hope of poaching meritorious candidates from the top NLUs even now despite all their fanfare. As for [...] online proctored exam, [...] doubtless has seen its share of cheating too. But again, nobody cares! A national level undergrad exam qualifying for a professional course that sees participation from 5000 students is just not worth discussing, not even for how inequitable it is.

LSAT Cant be compared 30 Jul 2020, 05:54

All people citing 'successful' conduction of LSAT should understand that there's a difference on what LSAT evaluates and what CLAT/AILET evaluates. For the kind of test LSAT is, based on reading and comprehension for both UG and PG, it would be stupid to attempt cheating. You would have to apply your brains, and considering they claim to shuffle questions/options, it would be simply difficult to co-ordinate. You also cannot simply Google the questions and seek answers.
CLAT along with these things also tests knowledge. If you're asked who's the CJI presently, any ability to discreetly Google will allow you to search for answers.

So stop talking about how AI/proctoring worked for you, and thus it should work everywhere. If it worked for you, great, join Jindal, enjoy, and let us remaining people be in peace.

Since CLAT has already changed the pattern, why not change it again? Let's have a GMAT/ LSAT type examination which tests the Aptitude and not the bookish knowledge.

Make the life of genuine students a hell once again after the consortium changed it once already. Do you even realise how much preparation goes in to just get accustomed to a particular pattern .

States have carried out 10th/12th/CET examinations despite these directions. They'll develop an Standard Operating Procedure for movement and allow for conduction of CLAT. The only thing which will save fretters is the fact that if even a couple of states are unable to conduct it, you might be safe because unlike those examinations this has to be conducted on an all-India level at the same time.

Just accept it will happen, and study. If it doesn't, you may relax or celebrate or be angry, whatever you want to be. Good luck!

Nope. He's the Secy-Treasurer. Anyone who knows anything about how associations of persons work, the Secy controls the agenda of any governing body meetings. And the Treasurer controls the purse, ie the financial tool to implement the agenda. Funnily enough, NLU Consortium felt it a good idea to make the Law School VC both Secy and Treasurer - nobody does that because of how beholden a body can become to one power centre.

RVR was responsible for that. I wonder how and why the consortium and the Sec/Trez allowed DNLU to conduct CLAT this year though, by breaking the cycle of rotation as per date of establishment. DNLU is perhaps the youngest NLU on the block unless the J&K one has started already.

Irrespective of the guidelines issued by the centre whereas states have conducted their examinations. Even the high court of Karnataka gave the go ahead to the CET to be conducted from 30 July onwards. There are almost a lakh aspirants for karnataka CET and if this could be conducted then certainly clat can be conducted by following certain guidelines to social distancing, sanitisation and crowd management.

For those claiming Jindal and LSAT to be visionary by conducting RPT examination need to understand that barely 7000 aspirants(Mostly from privileged background) appeared for it , it is no way comparable to an All india examination with more than 60,000 aspirants from. All parts of the country. Moreover the pattern of LSAT hardly leaves a scope for cheating but with objective based questions it becomes easier to do so in papers like Clat, ailet and slat. The Slat was conducted via the RPT mode and miserably failed to ensure integrity of the examination. So it definitely wont be possible for clat or ailet to shift to an RPT mode.

Any delay in the academic calender of these institutes not only affects the 2020-2025 batch but would also adversely affect the universities with respect to the upcoming batches of the coming years in terms of resources, breaks etc.

Since ALL INDIA BAR EXAMS (AIBE) are also postponed now. It can be apprehended that CLAT will also be postponed till a date which seems feasible. My suggestion to the consortium of NLU's will be to postpone the exam and decide a date after assessing the situation some time later - the NLUD has chosen.

The accessibility nonsense cited by CLAT should also take into consideration the fact that public transport is still not banned in a lot of places. Sure, one may not have a computer at home. But many also will be unable to reach a particular centre without proper means of transport. Postpone it or find some other alternative.

I suppose CLAT should be postponed till situation improves a bit . It's absolutely unreasonable to conduct the exam now when everyday the cases are breaking new records. Not only can it harm the students if they catch Corona but also families, there is no way a exam of such magnitude can be conducted by following proper guidelines . Viruses are just too small and even masks are of no match to them , also just outside the center the gathering of people itself will be very dangerous .
Moreover the idea of a proctored test is absolutely not possible ,a lot of people cannot afford technology nor a stable internet. As of now the exam should be postponed and if situation improves can be conducted by giving a prior notice of 7 to 10 days .
