AZB & Partners came out on top of a 2014 first-half-year league table released by corporate analytics company Venture Intelligence, recording 22 deals worth more than $2bn. AZB had also topped the company’s half yearly rankings in 2013.

Induslaw recorded 15 deals in the rankings, jumping from last half-year’s eight. It was one of the law firms on Snapdeal’s $100m equity infusion, which made up a chunk of its $300m of included private equity (PE) deals that put it just inside the top six firms by value of transactions reported. Other smaller firms, such as K Law, also ranked highly by deal count and values.

ALMT Legal came out in second place by volume with 17 deals totalling ($99m). Tatva Legal and Samvad Partners, which were tied with Indus last year, were respectively at ninth and tenth place in the rankings having recorded four and three deals.

The rankings pegged Amarchand in fifth position, with 10 qualifying private equity deals worth $386m. Amarchand acted this year on Bertelsmann’s infusion into Pepperfry, Warburg Pincus into Fidelity Capital, Snapdeal, and the Groupe Lactalis FDI from Carlyle among others.

S&R Associates which acted on the $12m India Property Online funding with ELP and Fox Mandal slotted in at 15th place.

Khaitan & Co recorded only two deals of $33m putting it into ninth position.

AZB had also led the M&A rankings in Q1 2014 but dropped off to seventh spot by the end of the half year, according to data from Mergermarket.

So when ppl keep posting that KCO has no work they are not just been nasty its true!!.. feel bad for the ppl who fall for their marketing tactics and join the firm... corporates obviously don't see KCO as a go to firm..

Hey Kian, S&R has been on the forefront of the news for quite some time. Seeing it lagging behind in this table doesn't seem right to me. Lemme illustrate- the Bertelsmann deal, to my recollection, had employed both AMSS & S&R, with S&R representing Bertelsmann India's interests. This report does not give S&R any credit for it. I'm relying purely on my average-intelligence and imperfect memory! Not an S&R-lawyer...please correct me if I'm wrong..

Haha, good memory, you're right of course.

However, at 15m that deal seems to have been recorded in the table. They are likely to have done another PE deal this year too, but the league tables are imperfect and generally tally up whatever information has been recorded in public, so they, and firms' performances need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Where is Desai & Diwanji in the table? They are the usual toppers of all ranking lists (even beating Amarchand and AZB at times). Clearly, AZB is doing the big deals along with Luthra and Trilegal as their average deal values are fairly high (70 - 100 million). Most other law firms seem to have deal values which are 50 mil or lesser.

The surprises for me have been JSA and KCO not getting enough number of deals. I also wonder how NDA and ALMT manage to get any fees if their average deal size is 5 to 7 mil. Even the K Laws of the world have better average deal size.

Azb is a market leader when it comes to private equity and mergers and acquisitions - they have brilliant lawyers like Shuva Mandal, Essaji and Anil kusturi.

There should be another story for the M&A league tables for law firms - need to click on the M&A tab - legal:

We're already covering M&A league tables from mergermarket, which if I recall correctly, seem much more comprehensive than the VI ones. However, in PE, no one else is doing league tables, so we've stuck with those.
Something amiss 21 Aug 2014, 08:43

Seems something amiss here - on the VI link KCO is second on M&A ranking. On PE, reporting looks incorrect. They have closed around 15 PE deals this year. Insider speaks.
