Amarchand Mangaldas maintained status quo as project finance leader for the third year running and reported a greater overall deal revenue since last year, according to data provider dealogic’s year end table for 2013.

Project finance boutique Link Legal which had reported a strong performance last year slipped from the table completely this year to give the second place to Desai & Diwanji, which was not among last year’s 10 frontrunners from India.

Amarchand acted on 27 deals worth over $10bn as compared to 2012’s 24 deals worth $7.4bn, and Desai & Diwanji acted on 20 deals worth over $6bn.

AZB & Partners was present on the project finance league table for the first time in three years, sitting at number four, after Luthra with its three deals worth over $3bn. Luthra’s eight smaller deals valued similar to AZB’s overall deal value.

Amarchand, Desai & Diwanji, Luthra & Luthra, AZB and SJ Law Advocates & Solicitors were the only law firms to make it to the Asia Pacific top ten.

D&D has always been more of a Corporate / M & A boutique having just recently ramped up its project finance practice after a bunch of smart lateral hires. Keep it up in other areas as well!

The India only rankings are prepared exclusively for us by merger markets... the standard version they send out includes only 2 or 3 Indian firms...

Where is JSA? Amit Kapur et al...what's happening there. No Khaitan either?

JSA is only doing 1 or 2 lender transactions. Most of their work is from the Borrower side. Which is just milking the client as bulk of the work is done by the Lenders' Counsels.

It is the Lenders' counsel who milk the Borrower. Though they bill the Lender(s), it's ultimately the Borrower who foots the bill. If a flat fee is not negotiated, it's a free for all at the cost of the Borrower, as the client (Lender) has little incentive in keeping tabs on the amount and authenticity of the time billed.

FYI, as promised earlier, here's an insidery view on legal league tables and why some deals and firms get reported, and others don't:
