New Law College Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Pune (BVDU) will host NLC Lex Sollemnis: a law fest including the third edition of the justice PN Bhagwati International Moot Court Competition (PBIM), a first of its kind national model directors’ meet (NMDM), and a law quiz, on its campus on 16 and 17 March 2013.

The visionary behind the fest is Prof Dr Mukund Sarda, dean & principal of BVPU, alongside faculty in-charge Prof Dev Chopra and co-ordinator Prof Aman Mishra. Legal awareness magazine Legal Era is association partner at the event.

Last year the PN Bhagwati moot, in a novel move in Indian mooting, allowed the UK’s University of Reading to participate in the competition through video conferencing.

Dignitaries at PBIM’s first and second editions include, other than former chief justice of India PN Bhagwati, former and sitting Supreme Court judges Shivraj Patil and Balbir Chauhan, former union law minister Veerappa Moily, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, former ITLOS judge Gurmundkar Eirikkson, former West Bengal human rights commission chairman NC Sil, and Bombay high court judge AM Thipsay.

The National Model Directors’ Meet (NMDM), pioneered by BVPU, will allow five law schools to register. Teams of five to seven students from those law schools will compete in two rounds – the reverse-the-judgment round, and the directors’ general meeting round.

By providing a unique format for the competition the college hopes to create new avenues to understand the pros and cons of corporate and company law directly from the horse’s mouth.

The law quiz, scheduled for 17 March, requires compulsory participation from the five NMDM teams, the 18 quarter finalist and the two losing semi-finalists at the PBIM. Finalists at the PBIM will not be allowed to participate.
