The Supreme Court today said that the provisions of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act could not be invoked by the alleged sex workers to resist their eviction from the places being used as brothel that have been directed to be closed by the courts.

Senior advocate Kamini Jaiswal has filed a fresh writ petition in the Supreme Court through advocate Prashant Bhushan, seeking to institute a Special Investigation Team to probe the incidents of attacks on 15 and 17 February at Patiala House court and also issue suo motu contempt proceeding against three advocates, accused of interfering in the administration of justice and for willfully violating the orders of the Supreme Court dated 17 February.

Court No 7 of Supreme Court was witness to a suspenseful hearing on 20 January as counsel after counsel told the Bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi and Prafulla C Pant that it had been misled by the Uttar Pradesh Government that Justice Virendra Singh, a former judge of the Allahabad high court, whom it appointed as the Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh under Article 142 of the Constitution, which gives the Court extraordinary powers to do complete justice in a case, was in the list of names being considered by the selection panel.
