2G case pressure builds: Uday Lalit, Venugopal turn up heat

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) through counsel K K Venugopal filed the first chargesheet in the second-generation (2G) spectrum case last week after the Supreme Court appointed senior advocate Uday U Lalit as special public prosecutor.

Former telecom minister A Raja, former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja’s aide RK Chandolia, D B Realty’s former chief Shahid Balwa and its managing director Vinod Goenka, Unitech’s managing director Sanjay Chandra and three company officials of Reliance Telecom are those named in the chargesheet.

Senior SC advocate Prashant Bhushan had on behalf of Centre for Public Interest Litigation filed a special leave petition (SLP) against a Delhi High Court order challenging dismissal of a PIL against the 2G spectrum allocation in 2010.

The First information report (FIR) in the case was registered by the CBI in 2009 under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Corruption Act.

A special CBI court under justice O P Saini has been constituted to preside over the trial.

The CBI stated that it would also file a supplementary charge sheet on 25 April before completing investigations by 31 May.

Prashant Bhushan had filed a Writ Petition and not a "Special Leave Petition against a Delhi High Court (judgment)(sic)". The Delhi HC judgment had struck down the notification on account of which the licenses were doled out. There is therefore no question of Mr. Bhushan challenging the said Delhi HC judgment.
