Delhi rape accused pick ML Sharma as lawyer; Sharma publicly blames victim

Public interest litigation (PIL) activist lawyer ML Sharma, who is defending three of the six Delhi rape-accused in Delhi’s Saket district court, said in an interview that he had never heard of a “respected lady” being raped, and that the rape victim’s male companion was “wholly responsible” for the incident as the unmarried couple should not have been on the streets at night.

In an interview at a café outside the Supreme Court he said:

Until today I have not seen a single incident or example of rape with a respected lady.

Even an underworld don would not like to touch a girl with respect. [Bloomberg]

Sharma most recently filed a PIL against the government’s September notification allowing FDI in multi-brand retail. His other PILs this year include a dismissed petition for CBI probe into senior advocate Shanti Bhushan’s evasion of stamp duty, a PIL seeking cancellation of 194 coal-block allotments, and a challenge to the setting up of the Lokpal bill drafting committee, among others.

Last week the Saket Bar Association resolved that its 2500 members must not represent six Delhi men accused of the rape and murder of a 23-year old on 16 December, on the grounds of immorality. The fast track court for the trial was inaugurated 10 days ago.

Seems like an incompetent lawyer who will ensure that his clients see the gallows. Good for them a she is unlikely to come up with any thing useful other than blaming the victim or the media (for media trial and violation of article 21 of the constitution). Just pity his family if has any females in his household.

Delusional and looking for some publicity.

This was bound to happen when all "competent" lawyers refused to do their job. In the end, it is the system of Justice that suffers; the victim will not get justice.

I guess everyone in this country with a law degree is going crazy....the lawyers..... as well as the ones who give such morons the certificate to practice.

Recently some CM from some godforsaken state (excuse the adjective but the state deserves the adjective by virtue of such decision) put an astrologer on the board of an executive committee of a law school of distinguished fame. nobody of distinguished eminence nor the judiciary objected btw.

BCI wanted a quota system for nominees of BCI members in law colleges and law schools and nobody objected (although some said they would object.)

and now this.....

Incidentally all these statements and decisions were made by individuals who have a law degree.... fail to understand who gives these people a degree and why...how difficult is it for a person (unless you urself are senile) to understand that such law aspirants are unworthy of such degree.

Wait...lemme predict the future....... Soon some judges monkey's newborn chimp will be offered a law degree, on his birth, simply because he belongs to a generation of lawyers.......

ridiculous state of affairs....god save the land.

Can't anybody realize that by actually representing the accused this guy is trying to help the process of justice? He is just trying his level best to do what it is - a challenge no one is willing to take. Was Ram Jethmalani bad when he defended Manu Sharma? It's all what you think of it. Beauty, or in other words, opinion, lies in the eye of the beholder.

Can't hold anything against the man for representing the accused. But questioning the character of a dead woman, who is incapable of defending herself, is disgusting.

Shame on you ML Sharma.

Representing the accused doesnt mean questioning the victims character and referreing her as a lady with 'no respect'!
Its too disgusting a remark and one can only pity his daughters or any female member in his own family..

Adv. Sharma needs to get his head checked....Agreed that the accused have a right to legal representation...nobody is questioning that but the fact that he accuses the victim..is sick and disgraceful....and the statement about a decent lady being raped..what the hell does he mean by that???? Even a woman who sells her flesh for money (prostitute) has the right to decide who she wants to sell herself to.
And who the hell is Adv. Sharma to decide which lady is decent and which one is not. As far as going out in the evenings is concerned i would like to ask Adv. Sharma has he or his wife stop going out of their house or stop eating out, or watching movies cos they are supposedly decent people???

Adv. Sharma if you are reading this and since i dont know whether or not you have a daughter, next time she or your wife decide to step out of the house at anytime in the day or night just think again.

It is very easy to comment on issues. Have you even once thought about the trauma that poor child faced and the state of her family today. You are no better than those rapist cos they violated her whist she was alive and you continue to do so even after she is dead.

I just hope and wish nothing like this happens to your wife or your daughter but god forbid if it does i will definately repeat the statements made by you verbatim to you and lets see what your reaction will be???

Get your head checked!!! you need medical help!!!

When ferocious animals can be taught to obey law, the wayward and ruffians or even don of dons could be stilled by fear of law. If I or you could come out in Night day or any time why not my sisters and mother?
Women cannot be subject to any kind of suffocation in the civilized society.
The society cannot be left at the mercy of these ruffians or dons, such will be our laws and manners much ahead of barbarian uncivilized stone age of the past. The norms will be it is my life and I know how best I could make it effective to the society.
