Karnataka wants a Supreme Court bench in Bangalore

The Karnataka state government has sent a formal request to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to set up a permanent bench of the Supreme Court in Bangalore.

The Times of India and Business Standard reported that the minister for law and parliamentary affairs, Suresh Kumar, said on Saturday that the state government had asked the CJI to consider the request on priority.

He said: “The then Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily had advocated that this bench should come up in Bangalore. Now, once again, a new memorandum would be submitted to the Chief Justice of India repeating the request.”

I Agree! A bench each of high court and supreme court should be within 200 kms reach of everybody in this country. This will ensure justice in real terms, especially when we all know the status of lower judiciary (except in few places like Delhi). Why should one be forced to not only travel thounsands of kms (take the example if a person in NOIDA and wants to file a case in Allahabad High Court OR a person based in Kerala wants to move supreme court) but also incur huge costs in engaging expensive outstation lawyers and AORs etc besides wastage of precious time? Also, the high courts and supreme court should also slowly inculcate a habit of 'listening' to other lawyers in addition to those 12-15 senior counsels!

The the Union Law Minister is an alumnus of ULC Bangalore, and hence, he would want it to be there. Rather, Mumbai would be a more conducive place.

I agree with the proposition. The country's most prestigious law school in India is located in Bangalore. It's high time a supreme court bench is located in Bangalore. This will give the smartest lawyers in the country to practice close to their college!
