The Government is planning to set-up a super-regulator to wield control over all quasi-judicial authorities functioning in India.

The decision follows the Supreme Court’s directives to bring about uniformity, accountability and transparency in the working and administration of various tribunals and regulatory authorities, the Economic Times reported today.

Following the justice department’s proposal approximately 62 such quasi-judicial bodies are exercising subordinate delegated jurisdiction in fields such as telecoms, taxes and insurance and would be monitored by a Central Tribunal Division.

The aim behind the creation of such a division is to ensure that the regulators and tribunals established by the Central Government are better organised and more efficient.

“The objective behind the central tribunal division was to ensure that if a chairperson or a member of any tribunal or regulatory body is not able to take sufficient interest in the working of the tribunal, the entire system will not languish and ultimate consumer of justice will not suffer”, the ET quoted the justice department.
