Rohinton Nariman to start as solicitor general Monday: law ministry

Supreme Court senior advocate Rohinton Nariman will be the new solicitor general after Gopal Subramnium unexpectedly resigned from the post two weeks ago.

The IANS news agency reports:

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Rohinton Nariman was Saturday appointed the Solicitor General of India, the second topmost government lawyer.

According to an official notification issued by the law ministry, Nariman will assume charge on Monday and represent the government in all important cases that were to be attended as Solicitor General.

Nariman, 55, the son of eminent jurist Fali S. Nariman, succeeds Gopal Subramanium who resigned in the wake of a controversy over Communications Minister Kapil Sibal opting for Nariman to represent him in the apex court in a case seeking probe against him for allegedly favouring a telecom operator.

There is no doubting rohinton's abilities but it will be interesting to see how the government officials handle his temper!

Didn't the Government say that Rohinton was appointed by Sibal in his personal capacity? Looks like the Government wasn't being totally honest about its intentions.

Rohinton will resign in a month. He has no idea about how the government counsels brief. When he loses his temper during briefings by law firms etc., I pity him adhering to the stupid government briefings.

With this appointment, all 3 juniors of Soli Sorabjee who had been together in his chamber--Harish Salve, Gopal Subramanium and Rohington Nariman--would have become SG. I think its a great achievment of a chamber to have nurtured and produced 3 SGs.

UPA government under Manmohan Singh , advised by Kapil Sibal, would want the Supreme Court to legalize Corruption and punish those who oppose it. Not that it is not happening, but they would want the Supreme Court's approval.

Separation of power is very fundamental for a successful and vibrant democracy.

I ever prayed that Mr. Subramaniam must leave, whosoever might be his alternative. I am glad to see that he is replaced by Mr. Nariman Jr. a man of rare distinction and ability. (Mr.Sibal may now sleep without the dreams of 2G)

(Mr. Gopal may now appear in Ram Gopal's new star cast.)

I hope the political setup of Bar Council of India has got a good lesson and never ever in near future, they shall dare to elect SG {the Power f(oo)l ex-officio's} as Chairman of BCI again.

Very petty indeed. Mr Subramanium in fact is the rare senior advocate who had the guts, drive and vision to usher in much-needed reforms.

Sorry brother. You're attitude will not get you far. You rely on ego for justification when you could have just written why you thought he had any vested interests; if at all.

Anyway, still I am giving you a chance to substantiate your allegations for your own reputation. I know you will not because you don't have any. If you did, you would have gone public with the proof and even filed a suit.
