7 new Delhi senior counsel: Vaish head Ajay Vohra + 6 others

The Delhi high court yesterday designated seven lawyers to senior counsel, reported Bar & Bench.

The new designates are, according to Bar & Bench:

  • Vaish Associates managing partner Ajay Vohra,
  • Sachin Dutta (Delhi University graduate),
  • Vinay Garg (enrolled 1990)
  • C Harishankar (indirect tax and service lawyer enrolled in 1993),
  • Manoj Ohri (criminal and service lawyer since 1995),
  • Sanjeev Sabharwal (corporate commercial and income tax counsel), and
  • Ravi Sikri (practising for more than 20 years*.*

Vohra said that he would be going independent and the firm would adapt its constitution.

Wow! Does that mean Vaish is doomed with the Managing Partner deciding to leave for his own selfish motives?

Mr. Vora leaving is because of legal restrictions around a senior counsel, if you are aware of it. Further, there is nothing wrong in embracing such an honour. I wonder what kind a professional you are to term such a move as "selfish". Ain't everyone out in the market to create a name for themselves?

Plus what makes you think that the association will no longer be there? Mr. Vora is a homegrown Vaish product and would continue to represent Vaish on their matters going forward as well, unless you have something to suggest otherwise.

Exactly! I agree with Stumped! Mr. OP Vaish himself was a designated senior at SC, but this excellent tax firm went on to grow!

Actually, they are quite used to this model, having followed it for years with Late Mr. O.P. Vaish being a designated Senior. He continued to operate out of the Vaish office, was fully involved into day to day operations of the firm until Ajay and Vinay took over. It was only that his billings were separate. His 'economic' share in the equity of the firm was parked to his non practicing wife! With Ajay now being designated a Senior the firm will just replicate the model!! Being a 'family' firm, there is absolutely nothing legally or ethically wrong in this!

Having said that, Ajay fully deserves the elevation, he is a thorough professional and is a very dependable tax counsel.
