Bombay HC makes 7 new senior counsel (but only 1 woman): HRLN’s Gayatri Singh & Mihir Desai; Rajiv Chavan, Sanjeev Gorwadkar

The Bombay high court has designated the seven advocates as senior lawyers, according to a notification on its website dated 8 May.

New senior advocates are:

  • Avinash V Gupta (Nagpur)
  • Surendra Kumar Mishra (Nagpur)
  • Mihir Akshaykumar Desai (Mumbai)
  • Sudin MS Usgaonkar (Goa)
  • Rajiv Balasaheb Chavan (Mumbai)
  • Gayatri Singh (Mumbai)
  • Sanjeev Mukund Gorwadkar (Mumbai)

Desai is a human rights lawyer, who co-founded the Indian People’s Tribunal and the Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) with senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, as well as having been behind other initiatives and written books.

Gayatri Singh is also part of HRLN.

Chavan is the presidetn of the Advocates Association of Western India.

In 2014, the Bombay high court had designated 11, of whom one was a woman, after having not designated a single woman in the two preceding years, at which point only six out of 203 new senior counsel designated in 20 years in Delhi and Mumbai were female.

Mihir Desai seems to be the only worthy candidate from the Bombay Bar. Anyone who has heard Gorwadkar argue would be surprised that he has been designated. Gayatri Singh seems worthy, but not impressive in Court. Chavan seems to have gotten it only because he is the President of the Appellate Side Bar Association.

Hahaha I'm sure he did not apply. There is no way Andhyarujina's son will miss out being designated if he so wished.

There are some lawyers who never became Senior Counsel because they thought that it was too demeaning to apply. For example, from the Appelate side, neither C.R. Dalvi nor M.A.Rane were designated as senior counsel even though they were richly deserving. They refused to apply. If memory serves me correct, K.J Abhayankar was also not a senior consel.

Even Tushad Cooper for that matter.

Even deserving candidates like Anturkar and Kumbhakoni became Seniors much later than they deserved to be. It's the moral pride of the Appellate Side Bar which keeps them away from applying.

True that!!
Anturkar probably is the most under-rated Senior Counsel in Bombay High Court!

Shocked and surprised at all the four names from the Bombay Bench. Is the move of designating these good or bad, i dont know. But soon this will lead to the end of the difference between designated and non-designated lawyers. i
