Confirmed: Mukul Rohatgi, not Salve, gets Attorney General of India post

Senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, the “King of Miscellaneous Days” according to this profile by Court Witness, has formally been confirmed to be the recently elected BJP government’s Attorney General of India, reported the PTI.

Rohatgi told NDTV: “My priority would be to streamline the litigation process, to cut down litigation between government departments and PSUs… New government will co-operate in this aspect as this government wants to change a lot.”

His appointment, replacing senior counsel Goolam Vahanvati, follows weeks of speculation about whether fellow senior counsel Harish Salve would get the top government legal job; Salve was considered the front-runner for the job by the Mail Today and DNA only two weeks ago according to its sources. However, the Economic Times hinted five days ago that Salve’s heavy existing commitments, including in international arbitration and as a barrister at London’s Blackstone Chambers, could be an issue.

The new government’s law minister is Ravi Shankar Prasad.

I wonder where Goolam will go ! He didn't have a Supreme Court practice before being brought to Delhi, as our country's Solicitor General. The way I see it, that's just the beginning of his worries. If Goolam stays back, he will even have to bow down to Rohinton and Gopal (incidentally, they both have long tenures as judges in the Supreme Court). They have served as his subordinates, during their short lived tenures as SG's and know him, now only, just too well...

It seems that nobody knows or probably even cares...I was wondering if his sacrifices and efforts were rewarded by the earlier dispensation with a fancy recco/ assignment. They sent Justice Pathak to The Hague. That set the ball rolling for generations !

The truth is that non of the SG / ASG under the UPA had the desired standard . One of the ASG is a pure " Jogad jantra" businessman .Their personal moral standard is also extremely poor . Many talented quit in between their tenure purely due to presence of unprofessional characters in the team . Trust , there will be a good team this time .

Just wanted to know:

Knew that Mr. Rohatgi has a terrific practice in SC.
How much he roughly earns in a day?
How did he make up his mind to forego this income?
Can he still continue his private practice (not agianst Govt.)?

The position is "Attorney General". for or of is for your liking. Just because 76(1) say 'for india' doesn't make it the designation.

LI should do a story on the FDI and economic policy of the new government plus the foreign law firms issue. I think LI is pro-Congress so they are reluctant to publicise this government.

I really NEED foreign firms to come in atleast by the end of the decade. I will petition the BJP government everyday if I have to. Who is in?

Cannot take the unprofessionalism of domestic firms anymore. I will have to quit practice and start teaching or something otherwise man.

Though the Advocates Act uses the term Attorney General of India not For India. Confusing I say.

As AG4India points out, I think both AG for and of India are in common use and therefore neither is incorrect.
