Delhi HC gets new seniors: Chander Lall, Akhil Sibal, ex-law firmite Darpan Wadhwa + 9 [UPDATE-1]

The Delhi high court has designated new senior counsel, including, as long expected, Chander Lall and Akhil Sibal.

The list is:

  • Arvind Nayar
  • IS Alagh
  • Prashanto Chandra Sen
  • Rajiv Bansal
  • Sandeep Prakash Agarwal
  • Puneet Mittal
  • Sonia Mathur
  • Akhil Sibal
  • Darpan Wadhwa
  • Jayant Sud

Akhil Sibal is (at least) the third in the Sibal family of lawyers to make senior, following his father and senior Congress politician Kapil Sibal and his brother Amit Sibal in 2014.Chander Lall’s expected designation, meanwhile, was the cause for the break up of Singh & Singh Lall & Sethi, as we had first reported last week.

Update: Darpan Wadhwa, who is a 1995 Delhi University graduate and a 1996 New York University LLM holder, had worked at P&A Law Offices from 1997 to 2002 before going independent as an advocate.

Any reason why only Mr. Lall and Mr. Sibal are in the headline? are the other 10 not well known or not deserving?

Was out for dinner once we got the full list, so didn't have time to do a proper story.

Akhil Sibal was mentioned because he's definitely quite well known (and we'd also heard his name mentioned for the last week as being a shoo-in for this round).

I'm sure all the others are equally deserving too, but I'm not hugely familiar to be honest. Would anyone mind sharing some background details on anyone they know and believe should be highlighted or perhaps interviewed?

I woke up today, still trying to digest the news. We know that the state of things are not good in the judiciary. We know the top level of the bar is compromised. But for the full court to designate Mr. Sibal at just 35 is most alarming. It is one of the most blatant cases of son stroke in our times. It is a message to all of us young lawyers if you are a son of a Sibal you are on the fast track. The full court will endorse you will a seal of approval. If you are not, you are a nobody, an outsider, an interloper.

The institutions are failing and the lawyers and judges are both equally responsible.

Are you saying Amit doesnt deserve it? Having seen him argue in the court, I believe he definitely deserves the elevation. Also, I think he is older than 35. There are others on this list whose elevation are way more shocking.

Kian, please do a piece on Akhil Sibal. We would love to hear about his journey towards this momentous achievement at the bar. Remember the one on Amit (by B&B) was downright hilarious.

While there is not doubt that Akhil's lineage is no handicap in the profession, I don't think anyone who has seen him perform in court can deny that he is an excellent lawyer who deserves this honour. Also, he is an upright man who keeps to himself and focuses single mindedly on his practice. If he qualifies on the age criteria, he deserves it on merit. Let's not say s*** about him merely because he is from a political family. Let's give him some credit for all the work that he has put in over the years.

The fact remains that the exception in respect of Mr. Sibal was because of his lineage. No doubt on that!

Kian, What about Mr. Rahul Mehra? He is not a senior yet but is a senior standing Counsel and doing pretty well I heard. Isn't he 40+ or probably the same age as Mr. Akhil Sibal?
