So are these the acche din that were promised? Now go make the official languages of all courts hindi and laws as per old religious texts!!

By renaming Bombay to Mumbai in 1995, the 'powers that be" destroyed a strong, global brand, and since then the city has truly become a universal slum. I have lived here all my life and I have seen the soul of this city gradually being plucked out, mainly by the builder lobby, so to me it matters not a whit any more what they call its High Court.

Yes, I believe that not only will Hindi be imposed (or co-opted) in our courts, it will be followed by all regional languages also, in courts as well as in official government communications, to a make us the modern "Tower of Babel". And what a fantastic superpower we will be; 2% of Indians (including NRIs) owning 90% of India at one end and 60% of us shitting (sorry, what do they call it?, 'defecating') at the other extreme.

Does the government have nothing else to do for the welfare of the citizens. Whatever stupid bills the government may pass but It's always Bombay, Madras and Calcutta for the cherished ones.

Is it possible to file a petition against the renaming of the courts and also to restore the glory and original names of the classic cities?

How can law minister suggest renaming of Bombay and Madras High court to Mumbai and Chennai High Court? These two high courts are not district courts to be named after their state capital. It should simply be called Maharastra and TamilNadu High Court with due respect to all the districts in the state.

This is absolutely ridiculous. The names of the erstwhile cities are an intrinsic part of the names of these institutions. These institutions have achieved such a degree of prominence under these names that it almost seems counterproductive to change them. Similar proposals to tamper with the names of IIT-Madras and IIT-Bombay have been met with disapproval. The heritage associated with their names is absolutely unparalleled. It would be an absolute shame if this goes through.

Its unfortunate that the Central Government fails to appreciate that the institutions are not named after the cities, but rather, after the provinces (more particularly the presidencies). The Bombay High Court exercised jurisdiction over the erstwhile Bombay Presidency which subsequently was divided in the Maharashtra, Gujarat, Daman & Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Even today, it exercises territorial jurisdiction over the States of Maharashtra and Goa, and the Union Territories of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. Much like Bombay, Madras exercised jurisdiction over the Madras Presidency.
Whether the High Courts should be renamed or not is a separate issue. But if the Central Government does decide the rename them, then the least that is expected is that they apply their mind to the scope of the territorial jurisdiction of these Courts before renaming them. It would be absurd to have a High Court of Judicature of Mumbai at Panaji. If it be renamed, it should atleast be called the High Court of Maharashtra & Goa.

why not the paschimbanga high court? or the bengali form ie paschimbanga uchya nyalayay? or maybe we'll just leave that to the bengal government to do once they've batted out their chit fund evils. justsaying.
