“)Update 14:15: As effigies burn, lawyers rail against Bedi, with ex-BJP and RSS members also complaining about not having been given BJP tickets in this election because of Bedi’s bias.

According to Indian Express legal correspondent Aneesha Mathur on Twitter, lawyers are currently protesting and burning effigies of Bedi.

Mathur tweeted:

No lawyer has been given a ticket this time by the BJP because of #KiranBedi say lawyers at TisHazar

I was an RSS pracharak but standing here for lawyers today, says #lawyer at protest in #tishazari

Lawyers say will not support “Dictatorial” #KiranBedi say lawyers

Former RSS, BJP legal cell members oppose #KiranBedi at #LawyersProtest in Tis Hazari

The All Delhi Bar Association coordination committee, upset over a lathi-charge ordered 27 years ago against lawyers protesting the arrest of one of their colleagues by now-BJP chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi, have vowed that “the legal fraternity in no circumstances shall ever accept Bedi as chief minister of Delhi and therefore has decided to burn her effigy”, reported the Firstpost and others.

According to the statement, when Bedi was chief commissioner of police in North Delhi, she did “everything to take avenge from lawyers of Tis Hazari court who were demanding commission of enquiry against brutal ‘lathi’ charge on innocent lawyers”.

In 1988, Bedi ordered a lathi-charge against a group of lawyers protesting outside her office against the handcuffing of a lawyer who had been arrested for theft. A commission headed by then-Delhi high court judge Justice DP Wadwha later held that the arrest was justified but that the handcuffing was illegal and the lathi charge was “indiscriminate and unjustified”.

Bedi later successfully appealed in the Supreme Court against the committee’s direction that a complaint against her and other cops should be filed under Section 178 of the IPC for them not giving witness statements to the commtitee (Read judgment).

This same lot of goons will be protesting the entry of foreign law firms. Most of them don't even have proper degrees and can't speak a word of English.

These guys have nothing better to do. It is because of people like these that the legal profession is tainted in this country. It have two decades ago... GET OVER IT... move on... do some work and earn a living for your families rather than engage in such immature, anarchist and obtrusive acts of vandalism.

Quoting an article from the New York Times, April 24, 1988:

"Defenders of Mrs. Bedi say that they expect her to remain in the public eye no matter what job she holds, and that she might eventually go into politics. But a senior police official who supports her said she needed to learn how to be less confrontational and self-righteous in her approach."

The article can be accessed at http://www.nytimes.com/1988/04/24/world/delhi-lawyers-end-strike-over-police-official.html

As for whats happening now, all I can say is that Bedi's finally living it up!
