NLU Delhi delays maiden recruitments after NUJS date clash, banks on 'situational' vantage

Delhi-vantage

NLU Delhi postponed its first day of recruitment activities from last Friday (18 May), which clashed with NUJS Kolkata’s “day zero” of fourth-year campus recruitment - to the first week of June.

NLU Delhi recruitment coordination committee (RCC) coordinator for the class of 2013, Devna Arora said: “The reason was that we wanted to avoid all kinds of clashes with the days zero of all other colleges. When we talked about this with the firms we were targeting, they agreed telling us that our advantage is that we are in Delhi.”

Arora told Legally India that NLU Delhi had rounded up on two possible dates for holding Day Zero initially – 12 May and 18 May, the latter looking more probable.

When NUJS also scheduled its Day Zero recruitment for 18 May, the firms NLU Delhi had approached informed the RCC that their recruiting partners will be headed to Kolkata, even though some people in recruitment will remain in Delhi and will be available for visiting campus.

Arora said that the top four to five recruiters had confirmed their intention to visit campus on Day Zero, whenever it may be held in the coming weeks. One top tier law firm is understood to have already taken written tests to shortlist candidates for the Day Zero interviews.

Based on the assurance of recruiters, and hoping to benefit from being situated in the same city as most of them, Delhi’s RCC decided to postpone the law school’s Day Zero to the first week of June.

“The idea was that being the first batch from our college to have campus recruitment, to recognize the fact that this is the first time we’re inviting firms, and we should be adjusting and accommodating. It is about building a long term relationship with these firms” explained Arora.

NUJS campus recruitment committee (CRC) for 2013 declined to comment on Friday’s Day Zero, when contacted this morning.

NLU Jodhpur has LLM rec. - mostly companies hire them. But then, NLUJ offers commercially focused LLMs (corporate, insurance etc) and MBA-LLM combo as well.

Unless the recruiment nowadays is all cloak and dagger stuff with the dates being handled in sealed envelopes in shady drop zones, surely NLU, Delhi knew that their proposed recruitment day clashed with the NUJS recruitments. Even if it were all cloak and daggerish as I imagine it to be, NLU, Delhi surely would have been clued in to the clashing dates.

Moral of the story- discretion is the better part of valour and [...]. NLU, Delhi seems to have woken up late to the fact that they have "situational" advantage (and while you are at it, can you please tell these kids to use better lingo and call it "locational advantage", [...]).

Nice save, but the cat's out of the bag.

It seems easy and fashionable to criticize a NLU these days for not being able to place their students. Guys, these are touch times and try to feel for the students who are being let down by tight job markets. They have put in a lot of time and hard work and with few jobs in sight and their careers not set for a take-off, the least we can do is to not take this opportunity to mud-sling.

Very unfortunate and very careless on NLU Delhi's part. As of now they are in a totally different league compared to nujs. Surely they should have known the impact of a date clash beforehand.

This story is generally a pitiful attempt at eyeball journalism. Just encourages bad blood. Kian, why don't you review the content better before publishing? Such shoddy writing only hurts the feelings of students.

Last year, someone was claiming NLUD to be the best college in India within 1-2 years. What has happened to that claim?

Have you ever understood why ToI re-uses its stories with the word 'sex' in it every few months. And why they still make it to the 'Most Read' stories indicator. And why the people who HATE ToI still make the effort to write a comment condemning the falling standards of ToI.

Legallyindia is the ToI of legal news. Most read, most condemned and certainly least moderated. Just as sex sells on ToI, anything to instigate the measuring-contest (evidenced by those crass kids from NUJS...how I've begun to detest that school because of their tastelessness on legallyindia!) sells at legallyindia. It gives in to the wants of the masses rather then attempting to set their own standards. Its certainly not The Hindu of legal journalism.

AND THAT'S WHY ITS NEWS. :)

This is the best comment I have read on legally India. Though I never comment on this site, I make an exception this time. I really like your analysis of Legally India. It is aimed at just getting maximum traffic by spicing up some senseless news. Sadly there seems to be no middle path in journalism, as is evident from your examples of the print media in India, which allows people to make money while delivering quality content to users..

Whether it maintains gold standards when it comes to journalism, or whether it behaves like a tabloid, at least we get news from LI. Earlier, it was all word of mouth and a lot of news and/or gossip never reached people. Love the diet of news and gossip provided by LI.

@ Team LI - keep up the good work and keep reporting even gossip. Its all fun.

@ Critics - grown ups must not be idealistic fools. No media agency is free from vested interests, political or other pressure etc etc. Take the stories you don't like with a pinch of salt. If you feel a story is incorrect or biased, post a comment. LI's articles are often greatly supplemented by comments and insider info.

You obviously haven't read Dr. Watsa column then. The advise is funny and consequently cheap. The questions are funnier though. So first read it, if nothing else.

Secondly, I never said sex education is cheap, read the statement again.

Lastly, advising me to use salt here seems misplaced. Google the idiom: 'taking with a pinch of salt'. You might then understand the context.

As usual, LI is biased against non-NLUs. Notwithstanding the absence of the NLU tag, DU, GLC, ILS continue to do pretty well. And certainly their placements deserve coverage. Maybe that would be decent criteria to compare law colleges in India.
While the best at NLUs may join Amarchand et all, the best in some of the non-NLUs join the Bar and the Bench. That's something that LI must shed some light upon.

Sometimes is not the website covering the news that's at fault. It is the University's responsibility to publish such things and send them to the media. I am sure most websites will find it newsworthy and publish it.

Thanks for your defence. In this case, though, this was not a press release or anything sent by the university by the media, but simply something only emerged through our research.

Then maybe that research should be directed towards a few of the good non-NLUs as well.
kianganz 23 May 2012, 08:21

True. We are actually reaching out to non-NLUs and lesser known colleges, but many are less accessible, faculty is not helpful, they lie heavily about their figures, or they simply don't have placement information.

Take GLC, for example on one of those counts - it is hard to get authoritative data on where exactly students go, because so few participate in the process. E.g:

http://www.legallyindia.com/201106072148/Law-schools/classical-recruitment-mix-at-glc-mumbai-with-bar-solicitors-llms-50-desk-jobs

We'll keep looking into this, and if there's a particular college you would like covered, why don't you make our life a little easier and get in touch with us, or let us know who is good to talk to there? We are actually quite friendly and not evil, despite often contrary assumptions. ;)

Best wishes,
Kian

Thanks for your comments.

I thought it was a rather interesting, unusual and relevant story.

A lot of eyes are on NLU Delhi, perhaps particularly for its location, VC and performance in mooting and elsewhere.

How the first batch to graduate fares in the recruitment stakes will obviously be interesting and indicative to most students at top-tier law schools, many aspirants, as well as recruiting law firms.

Happy to hear feedback and if you disagree.

@8.1... anon: I feel there's a compliment in there somewhere, but I'd also hope that LI often reports that which is important, rather than only that which is popular.

There is. I still visit Legallyindia. I don't think it is possible to avoid crass capitalism anywhere, so while I don't adopt it, I cannot avoid it.

To be perfectly fair Kian, you have to cater to all sorts of consumers. Newspapers/media have long since become egalitarian and don't impose the morality of the select.

This is one of the most bizzare, absurd and ridiculous comment I have come across. How did u manage this? LI is trying to stoke rivalries between the NLUs..Do you work for INDIA TV to come up with such conclusion? What will LI gain from such an act and believe me LI won't/can't do anything of this sort.

People here may disagree and rant about their college being better but in my restricted knowledge, most of the students if not all, would favour liberalisation of legal sector. Fella, you need to stop boozin' while posting comments at the same time.

Recruitments 22 May 2012, 18:03

It is really really sad that people compare universities on the basis of placements while that is not all that there is to a university. Please do not make placements the unit measure of the worth of an institution. Rather than pitting one institution against the other, please encourage and help the newer ones to come up and be as successful as the others. I'm pretty sure that students at NLUD are no lesser than those at the so-called "top-tier" law schools. And if nothing, they have amply demonstrated this at MPL, although I do not say that mooting is now a criteria to compare universities. It's the students and the faculty that make the institution and no other factor.

Kindly stop feeding your respective egos by making such negative comments against others.
