Law Firm Working Hours

AnonymousLLB 5 Feb 2010, 20:58

I am a law student trying to make up my mind as to whether I want to pursue a career in a tier I law firm. I understand that an internship is perhaps the best way to discern that for sure, but given a very limited span of vacations i need to take a call now and intern accordingly, either at a law firm or otherwise.

So i’d like to inquire of what the work hours at an average tier I firm in Mumbai is like? is it true that such firms necessarily require you to work till the wee hours of the morning, till say 1:30 -2 in the night? I’d really appreciate if someone could please throw some light on it, because otherwise one hears so much that its difficult to say facts from fiction!

in my view law firm working hours actually depends upon the following factors:

(a) Profile you are into;

(b) Deadlines you have to meet; and

(c) most importantly the kinds of senior you work with.

In addition to the three factors mentioned below, the culture of the firm makes a lot of difference and it need not be linked to the tier of the firm. I don’t think firms usually make interns stay that long.. But if you are looking to impress them and want a PPO then definitely find out in advance.

Best of luck!

Terrible work hours for almost all tier 1 firms

Work hours?

There is work only. Don’t dare to talk about the hours. Put your head down. And work.

Clock, contracts, calendar or clients don’t dictate the work ‘hours’. The boss does.

The working hours at tier 1 law firms is 9 to 9. Nine in the morning to nine next morning.
