Law firm 'Associate' or 'Intern'.

Hi everyone,

I have completed my B.A.LL.B. in 2012 and has cleared All India Bar Examination (AIBE) held in December 2012. I am not practicing in court as I do not want to litigate and aspire to be a corporate lawyer. But I could not undergo any internship experiences till date due to personal ignorance and lack of adequate exposure of my University.

So, should I apply for an Associate position in a law firm or rather intern to get hands-on skill sets to be a competent corporate lawyer in the days ahead? If I should intern, please recommend some organizations or legal start-ups which would provide me ample opportunity to hone excellent research and drafting skills to start with?

Hi there.

I think if you haven’t done any internships, you really need to get some work experience under your belt in any way possible. 90% of law firms won’t hire you without jugaad unless you have some good work exp on your CV. It’s generally a safer bet for them to take someone who’s done this kind of thing before, and who looks serious about the career.

You could also try beginning in the court, which is better than sitting around at home doing nothing, and from there try to shift into corporate law, once you have some experience and your CV looks a bit more rounded.

Hello Sir,

Thank you for your concern. Well, I want to intern in Mumbai (being the corporate hub) as I aspire to be a corporate lawyer. So, could you recommend some eminent corporate lawyers based in Mumbai who are open to take freshers as interns (as I do not have any acquaintances there)?

In this context, I would like to let you know that corporate law practice including law firm culture is yet to get prominence in Assam (my native state). Therefore, I want to shift to Mumbai at the earliest to start interning initially to learn and thereafter make myself employable to work at a corporate law firm in the forthcoming days.

You need above 70% marks in law firms facality.
