A WORD OF CAUTION: NLIU, BHOPAL

Most students, parents and public at large would be happy to be associated with National Law Institute University, Bhopal, one of the premier and prominent law schools of the nation. Well, one needs to reconsider. Recent years have witnessed NLIU, Bhopal turning into a place for illicit drinking, smoking and use of prohibited drugs.

The Director boasts about the vision and mission of NLIU on the website to be the following:

“Vision:- Develop NLIU as a Center of Excellence in Legal Education, Training and Research.

Mission:- Develop and nurture the intellects for the betterment of the nation and humanity through law and justice.”

However the realty in fact, is really hopeless. Much less than centre of excellence, training and research in legal education the university has evolved in a centre of excellence, training and research in drug addiction, drinking and constant use of abusive language.

Several grave and serious evidences has been found and reported to the university authorities time and again. Latest ones are: breaking in of some boys into the girls’ hostel, throwing of tables, chairs, window glass, summer-coolers, bed-ply, liquor bottles etc. from the top floor of the boys’ hostel in the corridor of ground floor, finding a drunk girl out from the hostel throughout the night at the fountain in the centre of the university and numerous incidents of party mishaps, women harassment, drink and drive etc.

To put it very lightly and with efforts not to hurt anyone, in any manner, I would like to bring out the seriousness of the issue and the consequences, which can be judged by the fact that last year the University […].

The University authorities have failed a big time in controlling such events. In fact, to be honest they are now in a state of indifference to all this. The warden of the Boys’ hostel, with all due respect, is a man of words, but no action. On a complaint being made to him he would act as if he is so determined and furious to put an end to such events, but all in vain. I believe he is in constant influence of influential people and is bound to act accordingly (obviously, he would deny this.) The situation worsens where he has been repeatedly informed and has in fact, himself recorded the presence of charas, ganja, weed, hash etc. in the campus but has done nothing concrete to stop the same.

The attitude of our Director is on a different level altogether. Although I am not competent enough to comment on his wisdom but I am sure he can kill anyone by his logics. For example to an incident of chicken pox in the University, he told that it is because students eat chicken and non-vegetarian and live in unhygienic condition that had caused chicken pox! Recently in order to reduce liquor consumption in the University he banned the use of vehicles in the campus! Point being, no need to search students and hostels or put sanctions but ban vehicle so that even the innocent ones suffer on account of wrongdoers!

Liquor bottles and hookahs can be found at every other feet in the campus be it, in and around Boys’ hostel or that of Girls’ hostel. Several complaints have been made to the Warden and the Proctor with no action being taken against the wrongdoers. In fact, at times it so happens that the complainant is further victimised at the hands of administration and also other students. I write this information at a great risk to my career at NLIU and with the hope that my identity remains unrevealed, but at the same time I feel duty bound to bring the reality in front of the public particularly the students who are considering NLIU, Bhopal and their parents. No doubt, the University is a great place to study and make a bright career if one can manage to cope up with such incidents. A reasoned and cautious decision needs to me made. The future seems bleak.

I would like to bring to everyone’s attention that the administration has appointed the committe and the whole post is inaccurate due to the fact that when the incident took place, the proctorial board summoned the students found indulging in this act of breaking into the Girls’ Hostel, and passed an interim order of barring these students from attending classes, being in campus and have rusticated permanently from the hostel premises. The final prder will come tomorrow.

It’s just that, one should refrain from publishing any such report or comment which is fallacious to its basis of assertion. If anyone has any doubt, he/she may contact the administration.

Rules are very strict in regard and there is a legislation regarding the rules of NLIU, so anyway, such students shall be time and again punished.
