10 things that might help you get through law school

-Radhika Agarwal (NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad)

From being a high school graduate to a final year student in law school, I have come a long way… and while I am yet to figure out the road ahead, I do have a fairly good idea of what not to do while in law school.

  1. Do not live life in a CV-building manner.
  2. Do not network with people merely in the hope of “making contacts” you might need 20 years later.
  3. Do not do things you are not comfortable doing merely in the hope of fitting into law school.
  4. Do not let everybody else’s opinions drown your own inner voice.
  5. Do not follow the herd. Carving out your own way will be much more rewarding in the end.
  6. Do not compare yourself with your peers.
  7. There is neither any yardstick for measuring success nor any secret formula for making it to the top.
  8. You do not have to moot in law school if you do not wish to.
  9. Landing oneself a high paying job in a law firm isn’t the be all and end all of life.
  10. Lastly, do not panic if you are clueless about your future. It is perfectly fine to be uncertain about life after law school!

Thanks. This needs to be said more often these days. Its all becoming a rat race, and these words should help. But i little cynical as to whether these points will remain with anyone, or will guide anyone since all (or at least most) learning is experiential (this is something i have started believing lately). Giving gyan doesn't help. :) It is not internalized (learnt in the truest/purest sense) unless it is is based on some experience. That, however, doesn't mean that we should convey what we have learnt.

Cheers!

Hi, first of all congratulations for writting such a nice thing.. It is to the point and very practical too. It made me remind me of my days in UPES law school. Though I enjoyed a lot and I have very keen interest in laws and its implications. I want to add to this article that there are some new branches of Law that are very interesting and people are unaware of. Some of which are as follows:
Under Graduate

B.Com LLB (Hons.) with emphasis in Taxation Law
B.Tech Computer Science & Engineering + LLB (Hons.) with Specialization in Cyber Laws
B.Tech Energy Technology + LLB (Hons.) with Specialization in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
BA LLB (Hons.) with emphasis in Energy Laws
BBA LLB (Hons.) with emphasis in Corporate Laws

Post Graduate

LLM with specialization in Energy Laws
LLM with specialization in International Law

I did my BBA LLB (Hons.) with emphasis in Corporate Laws from UPES,Dehradun. It is the best university I came across. If you want to know more about these programs visit http://www.upes.ac.in/college-of-lega-studies_(cols)
