DISCLAIMER

a)The India Today law school rankings have been a topic of constant debate over the years and for the most part, can be a redundant topic. However, do read on to see what is the best way in which a law school ranking system can be undertaken and who should undertake the same.

b)The views espoused in this post are completely unbiased.

c)Expecting that students from colleges whose names appear in the top 10 list would be dead against criticizing the rankings, I would request objectivity on their part while reading the post so that a better ranking system by the BCI or any like governing body can be suggested.

The famous India Today ‘India’s best colleges’ rankings are back. And yet again, they have delivered according to their expectations. While more NLU’s have made it to the top 10 list this time around, which evidences the fact that a preliminary research to understand the system of the CLAT has been undertaken, the rankings have still been poorly researched and have been compiled according to convenience. Merely interviewing NLSIU and NALSAR Vice Chancellors while mentioning NLU Jodhpur as NLIU, Jodhpur on Rank 8 and bringing GNLU into Rank 9 while making its entrance exam as a separate one, distinct from the CLAT, again raises questions as to why India Today even makes the effort to rank law schools.

The India Today rankings have always been the most awaited college ranking system and on a closer look, it can be observed that apart from Law, other avenues of education are more deeply researched and are better compiled. It is based on a perceptual and factual scoring system which grades colleges on a pre determined scale.

Law has seen a recent surge in terms of awareness, exposure and development and therefore, college rankings have never been more important for a college student in India. But, dependability upon a ranking system has always been questionable.

In the US, the American Bar has almost by custom, made it a point to not participate in law school rankings, at times even stating that ‘these rankings are a misleading and deceptive, profit-generating commercial enterprise that compromises U.S. News and World Report’s journalistic integrity.” Standard factors considered for the ranking are placement, academic exposure, and selectivity in admission, faculty resources and expenditures. There was even a report (Maccrate Report) by the American Bar Association in 1992 to streamline the education system in 1992 which was met by vehement opposition by the top 14 law colleges appearing in the ranking list.

In the UK, The League Tables of British Universities published by various sources such as the Guardian, the Independent etc. is the most preferred ranking system. This ranking system is much more holistic with reliance not purely on academic/research oriented factors. The factors used to assess universities include not only the quality of research but other factors which are relevant to undergraduate students such as teaching quality, entry standards, drop out rates, student satisfaction and graduate job prospect. Even these rankings have been criticized for the varying weights given to various factors before they are actually published.

Coming back to India, the situation as stated above, suffers from a combination of multiple drawbacks. To begin with, factual errors such as stating the name of a law school incorrectly, speak volumes about how reliable these rankings are, in addition to this, law as a field requires specific criteria to be assessed for grading, Always, a common mode to assess law schools has been through ‘Placement’, and this gets reflected in the ranking as well since perceptual criteria would be based on it. Therefore, most people only look at the placement and how compatible the vice chancellor of the college is with recruiters and the media, completely missing the issue as to whether a student is holistically developed in the environment he is given.

Other factors mentioned are also very abstract and subjective and don’t really indicate the true picture, for instance, student care, exposure and quality of academic input in colleges apart from NUJS, NALSAR or NLSIU would always be questionable since they are older and better equipped, at least as far as general perception goes(subject to correction of course). Therefore, there exists no authenticity on which any of the scores given to a law school for a particular aspect mentioned can be verified. Most students would rely on a magazine ranking to decide where exactly they are heading blinded by rankings which by itself are unsure of what they portray. For instance, University Law College, Bangalore could provide better academic input in terms of the number of guest lectures and legal luminaries who teach students compared to any of the newer NLU’s. Reputation of a college in a law school ranking can be adjusted at will through means most people are aware of but this adjustment of reputation comes at the comforting convenience of a student taking admission into a highly ranked law school even though it does not offer what he may require.

The Bar Council of India has undergone a sea change in terms of the number of reforms it has introduced. The announcement of the Bar Exam was a brilliant move, so was the plagiarism software. A ranking system devised by the Government based on factors determined solely by the Law Ministry to be released on a periodical basis can be the best means to assess the true caliber of law schools. India can be a first in this regard, and it would go a long way in helping students choose the best college according to their convenience and requirement. Not every student looks for a placement, students interested in research could go to a law school which is best suited for research, if the ranking does rank colleges properly in each criteria instead of stating that a college is ranked 5 and randomly puts rank 5 in all categories mentioned. Government approved ranking systems do exist in other fields such as engineering and students taking up courses in Engineering have the dual benefit of being better informed and better equipped; Law too can be a field which can be benefited almost immediately from the same.

Duh!! Well said.. seems liks these rankings were prepared without even a bit of prudence and proper research.. They are just making themselves sound like a buffoon by placing NLIU and CLC(DU) above NUJS. In fact, even including Faculty of Law(Calcutta Univeristy) in the rankings is like placing the Bermuda national team in the ICC Test rankings.. Since I live here, I hav a gross idea about it. Anyway, I think we hav got better things to do than looking at this piece of trash.. :|

I agree. In fact, India today even asked my university to place an ad in their magazine. It seems to be based on how much a college is willing to pay. Ask any ILS student whether they deserve to number one and the answer will be a NO!

Campus Law Centre ranked 4th, hahahahahahaha.

No offence to anybody, but guys keeping CLC above NLU, Jodhpur and NUJS. Is such kind of ranking is some joke??

Today for law students and law aspirants ( I mean CLAT aspirant), the major deciding factor is the placement and the resources available in the colleges and if we compare the placement of NLU Jodhpur, NUJS etc. and such other colleges like CLC etc. who even does not have any proper and regular classes also, then we can easily understand how these rankings are been given.

Common PPL instead of believing in fake rankings we can have rankings on the basis of placement and resoruces available.

@Kian, why can't we have some kind of poll on basis of some parametres on Legally India itself.

The blogger does not realise NLIU is older than NUJS and as old as NALSAR. Also NLUJ is just 1-2 years younger than NUJS. He is not even aware of student care, exposure, etc at NLIU and NLUJ. This post is crap. Truth is bitter.

Read the disclaimer what I have put up. Try to knock in some objectivity into what you put up. I have no where doubted which law school is better than which. But going by your logic, a university which is a 100 years old should automatically be ranked No.1. That is not the point of this post, read into how poorly researched this entire ranking system is and how it should be improved. Ohh and FYI,
-NLIU has got a one page advertisement in India Today this time around. Didn't want to bring this up and hurt anyone's sentiments.
-I am not from NLU J. So I have no love lost for it.

@7: Get a life. Just because your college gains by this year's ranking you oppose the critics here. Next year probably you will find some random never heard of college ranked above your college and then you will crib. Do you seriously think that these rankings (especially India Today) have any credibility. Does anyone here honestly believe ILS is Rank 1? or that NUJS is getting its due in the rankings? Do you seriously think that people who do not even know the names of the colleges they purport to rank, can be trusted as a source of information on these matters?

I think its time someone came out with a ranking of weeklies and show India today their place.

So, NLIU has an advertisement in India Today. Did it also run an advertisement in Outlook that has pushed NLIU from the tenth rank to third or fourth? The reason these magazines have annual rankings and not once in ten years is to provide for the fact that these institutions are not static and are making improvements, at times, on an annual basis.

I limit my comment to this point and not to the broader scope of your blog, which I understand is not directed at any colleges in particular.

I blame MP Singh for NUJS's low ranking. He's not publicity-hungry and is too much of an introverted moralistic Gandhian type. He should take journalists out for dinner at the nearby Hyatt and serve them the finest champagne and caviar. We'll move up to number one in no time.

The rankings in fact seem to be very random and arbitrary. However, the ranking system in Outlook is the worst. While India Today has consistently maintained its ranking scheme (viz. NLSIU, NALSAR and NLIU have always maintained their positions more or less); the Outlook rankings, are the ones which are most suspect. Last year there were the likes of Ambedkar Law College within the Top 10, NUJS was 2nd. Every year the Outlook rankings take a wild shuffle. Just because the 3rd generation law schools (NLU-J, GNLU, HNLU etc) got affirmations from Outlook once or twice, they will believe India Today rankings are hot smoking crap. For example sake, NLIU was called TN National law some shit and ranked 10 - while from what my friends tell me - the Outlook guys never even spoke to the authorities in Bhopal. Similarly, more than most of the times, NLSIU is the least interviewed.

I am not saying that the rankings are right or wrong. I am saying that there is no point crying wolf or "blasphemy" and whining like a woman in labour. Sit back and work hard. The best ones will get there. Most of the "original" top 5 are known to everyone. So you can stop thinking that India Today will make a diffrence to anyone. Or for that matter ranting here would.

10 - You'd be happy to know that NLIU Bhopal did, in fact, have an advertisement in the Outlook magazine, as well (p.133). Does THAT indicate anything? something? probably not?

Your post is muddled with ambiguity and confusion. Please be clear.. If you are talking about exposure, placements, etc then let me tell you that NUJS leaves NLIU far behind.. This year 12 students got recruited by AMSS(the highest paying firm) whereas, only 4 got offers from them..

Dude placements do not mean everything in a college, just like a moot does not mean everything. Its combination of everything. Just to make it clear I am an advocate and not from NUJS or NLIU but have visited both. NUJS campus does not stand in front of NLIU. Also NLIU have a really good faculty which has been constant over the years. The have some really big names there too. I have heard they have a lot of guest lectures and even have a video conferencing facility and even conduct interviews/lectures through video conferencing. They have regular guest lectures and luminaries visiting NJA often visit their campus. They have audio visual setup in every classroom and are thought in that manner. Every student has a single room except the first years but first years are given single rooms in their 2nd or 3rd trimester. NLIU students host a lot of events which includes North ZOne rounds of Stetson other than the Tankha moot organised by them. They also engage in legal literacy drives in the state.

I am not saying NUJS or NLUJ or others are bad, but you should open your eyes and analyse other colleges too. if other colleges do not advertise their activities on other sites does not mean they are bad.

It is also a fact that most of the NLIU students opt for litigation or judicial services. It does not mean that Amarchand and others dint pick them while NUJS opts for Corporate. So that is not the way to judge by which big firm goes to which college.

So chill and stop cribbing. NLIU, NUJS, NLUJ all rock and don't bother about these rankings. Think about your career.

Placement in no standard for ranking law colleges.

You were supposed to practice, whereas you join jobs.

Maybe that is where NUJS is lacking, they think placement is everything. Are they producing "lawyers" ... NO !
Anonymous guest 22 Jun 2010, 22:35

I second #16 .... Nujs are just bothered of placements and they think those firms coming to their college mean everything. NUJS campus is bad, GLC Mumbai seems to have a better campus or even an ILS, faculty nothing great, mooting is fine... library ok. Nliu has a hugh library with almost all books and online subscriptions too. They even have access to Jstor this year ive heard. I don't understnad why NUJS and others keep jumping around and crying foul. They have been given 6 but i guess they wont be satisfied untill they are given 1. I guess NUJS students could go to the extent of saying they are No. 1. I wouldn't be surprised if some1 here actually comes up and says so. NUJS may have good placements but lack in many other aspects which they need to accept. If being in the middle of the city and the number of law firms visiting a college was the criteria, NUJS would be rank 1.

But sorry. That's not the case.

I totally support #16's view on this point.

Anonymous guest 22 Jun 2010, 23:40

@18- dude seriously! u think its demeaning for NLIU. its NLU J which should be having problems being called NLIU. everyone knows it for a fact who is better and this bitter rivalry between NLIU and NLUJ for superior position should be left behind now, bc no matter what happens NLUJ has better placements, mooting culture, publications and legal aid facilities.
the only thing lacking was good infrastructure, but considering the fact that NLUJ is 5 years younger to NLIU and doesnt take any grant, it presently has comparable infra.
further, as a matter of fact NLSIU, NALSAR, NUJS & NLUJ are the only 4 recognised colleges abroad for LLM courses in IVY League and Magic Circle Firms. Even for that matter Indian firms like AMSS & Luthra only recognise these 4.

its abt time that people like u in NLIU realise whats the difference in ur own University and outside it bc if there is any recognition which is relavant it is the last bit only and nothn else which NLIU clearly doesnt have.

@ 18: I think giving us the tag of NLIU instead of NLU - J rather hurt our image.

Would not wish to be stepping foot on barren land, surrounded by garbage. I still don't know how they got better marks on infrastructure. Loaning books from NJA helps, I guess.

It is interesting to see such rivalry. We must learn to keep it healthy, though. I'd like to point out just one little thing. The above article states:
"The India Today rankings have always been the most awaited college ranking system and on a closer look, it can be observed that apart from Law, other avenues of education are more deeply researched and are better compiled. It is based on a perceptual and factual scoring system which grades colleges on a pre determined scale."

We are clearly taking the rankings of the other avenues on face value while being emotive about our own. Ask IItians what they really think of their conterparts moving up and down. They too might just be up to some India Today bashing. We'll be happy to find company!

All I want to say is that we must not mud sling on the basis of opinions that we have.

To people trashing the "small" NUJS campus. Please remember, it's in the heart of the city while the other colleges are located in the outskirts. Professor Menon wisely chose a smaller campus in the city to a larger one in the outskirts.

The law departments of LSE/King's/UCL are even smaller than NUJS because they are in central London. Does this mean that Cardiff University, which has a much bigger law campus, is better than these places?
sss 23 Jun 2010, 03:03

@21,
What you state is very true. But, when I did put in this statement, it was based on the presumption that ranking law schools in India requires a higher degree of skill and caliber as compared to other fields since the awareness that people have right now about this field is a recent phenomenon (7-8 years tops). Fields like Engineering, Arts, Science, Commerce are much easier to grade in India which is why as compared to law, students from these fields don't have so many complaints, its preset for the most part.

students from GLC and ILS are working in kuthra and AMSS...so ur argument that these firms only recognise a few law schools....is completely wrong.....people frm these colleges are pursuing their LLM frm IVY league universities....and this year ILS and GLC have had placements on par with NLUJ ....

I don't know from where you get these loads of unchartered stuffs.. NUJS has the best faculty and this is a fact which everyone in the legal fraternity(except you and a few others) know very well.. And, I know how good the campus of GLC is. Please don't crack jokes here.. And if at all, campus is a factor in deciding rankings, then may be NLSIU should be languishing somewhere in Tier 3 along with GLC/ILS. Even, the NLSIU canpus isn't something spectacular except for the Sri Narayana Rao Melgiri Library. Please don't make personal remarks at NUJS or any other students for that matter.. Make sure that the debate is healthy and parliamentary.. :)

Everyone seems to have overlooked probably the biggest flaw in both those surveys. How the hell does Symbiosis manage to end up in the top 5-6 in both of them is beyond me. A joke of a "campus", mediocre faculty, rubbish placements and an extremely inadequate library. The only thing that Symbiosis has got going for it is its students who against all odds succeed in spite of the college and not because of it.

1st things 1st....i'm going to NUJS.

@ppl cribbing that NLIU is better than NUJS- Kindly go and see how 99 % CLAT takers {like me} have filled up the preference system , we have given NUJS preference over NLIU,even if it was placed 4th in the OMR sheet, after NLIU.

@ppl cribbing over the "small" campus of NUJS- ppl, getting a 5 acre plot of land in Cannaught Place of Delhi may be 10 times costlier than getting a 50 acre plot in Noida. NUJS is in the heart of the city.....and the V-C is much more intelligent than all of us to have taken that decision.....and students do not come to law schools to enjoy the ambience and "vastness" of there college......they come there to study the priciples of law.....and certainly not to take part in sports events as my friend #28 pointed out.

@ppl cribbing over Placements- Yes , NUJS does offer good placements, anyone has a problem with that?? and if someone thinks that Legal Advisors {the ppl who are placed} have lesser knowledge of law etc. than lawyers, well.....i'd rather give way to such an "intelligent " person

And most importantly.......do u even know what it takes to be a VC of any National University........be it law, engineering, medical etc?? My dear friend , a VC's image is represented by his students, campus......if anyone points a finger at any college , the first person standing in the dock is the VC......so the NUJS VC must have been thoroughly intelligent to choose a small campus over a larger one in some rural area of Kolkata.....his vision for NUJS is much much ahead than chaps like u and me could even imagine

As far as law colleges are concerned Outlook's survey seems to be highly erroneous. For instance,NLSIU,NALSAR,NUJS and NLIU have been given different points in the "selection process" category ,when the selection process in all these institutes is same i.e through CLAT examination.Similarly,if you would have taken the view of the recruiters you would have been able to get a clearer picture of where these law schools stand.I request Outlook not publish these surveys just to fulfill it's annual ritual but keep in mind that prospective students take these surveys seriously and can make or break their careers by taking wrong decisions. It would be better if Outlook did more research before publishing such results just as it does in case of engineering and medical colleges.

FYI A&O went to NLU-J to place people for internships. Did they go to NLIU? I don't think so! None of the other foreign firms including Ashurst recruited people from campus. They shortlisted people for interviews to Delhi or Mumbai and took very few people. You'll be pleased to know there is one such top London based firm which only takes people from NLS, NUJS, Nalsar and NLUJ They had sponsored an essay competition organised by NLSIU where only these 4 colleges were allowed to participate.

Which Director are you talking about? NLU-J has a vice chancellor!

Whoever wrote that crap about NLIU being "ranked" third in the CLAT List, FYI its not a "ranking". The CLAT colleges are just listed in chronological order or establishment!!

You fool NUJS was 4th on the OMR sheet after NLIU because NUJS was established after NLIU. That's why CNLU comes in last in the list. The order of placing in the OMR sheet is irrelevant to the ranking of the law school.

Did anyone bother to check what the National Accreditation and Assessment Council with its office bang opposite NLSIU, blore have to say about this. Well, it is the only government authorized agency to rate and grade colleges. As per that ILS i think has an A+ grade. Well, there goes your argument that it was India Today that muffed it. The older colleges come with a legacy of the years behind them, I don't mean to say they can rest on the past, which I admit, they are prone and ARE doing. All I'm pointing to is that these colleges, be it CLC, GLC or ILS have chosen a different platform to act. All three are well regarded in academic circles in India or abroad, EVEN within the National law schools. Please refrain from unnecessary and rather comic arguments and think of it on a rather student-by-student basis. Some of the folks at GLC and CLC with all their 'Articled Clerkships' and practical training through the 5 years can put to shame any law schooler.
