Corporate 1 and 8 are good in terms of mentoring, with the lean structure of the new Corporate 8 allowing a lot of exposure, but the WLB part is really questionable. On the other end, the mid-level heavy Corporate 7 is the best if you're joining at a junior level and want WLB and don't care about mentoring. Somehow on the other end again, Corporate 2 is great if you deem micromanagement mentoring - it does teach how to handle a lot, to be fair. Corporate 5 is largely the most balanced in terms of mentoring and a decent WLB (as long as you stay away from the obvious partner). Corporate 3 is also largely a balanced team, but a stickler for tiny things like office timing. ▮▮▮

As for the partners, there are some brilliant and understanding senior partners in almost every team, which is how the craziness is controlled generally.

Meanwhile, some interesting stats from social

- Top ranks prima facie dominated by general category (upper castes and a few non-OBC Muslims)

- The three most common surnames to crack the exams are apparently Jain, Yadav and Meena. Nos 2 and 3 prima facie means that caste reservation in India is being dominated by just a few castes from the Hindi belt. No 1 means (assuming they all follow Jainism) that a tiny minority religious community in the general category is excelling much more than others (if they are not all Jains, that is still is an impressive stat).

He has a PGDL in media law from NALSAR. We should not refer to him as an alum and he should not list NALSAR as his primary university on social media. This is not comparable to Menaka Guruswamy and NLSIU.

If you look at his LinkedIn profile carefully, he did his graduation from St Xavier’s College and then did his LLB from “VU SLC”. I asked ChatGPT what that means. It replied Vishwakarma University, School of Law.

However, we can certainly refer to him as an NUJS guest lecturer, if he visits the college to teach credit courses.

I'd say its easier to just be rude at work since you're going to quit anyway. DGAF about what he thinks, behave like you have nothing to lose, since its really true.

If PA crosses a boundary call PA out and warn PA not to do it again, in front of the entire office. Bullies hate being confronted for bullying and will back off, and the public humiliation will provide you more satisfaction than any thrashing.

If I may be permitted to offer some advice, it would be to learn to be happy with yourself first. Approval of others and comparison with others will never make you truly happy. Your parents care for you and want you to see you do well. Hence, their genuine concern. If you show them you are happy, working hard and the long term future is good, they will trust you. Forget societal taunts. It never stops. Look at Elon Musk. He still gets trolled despite being filthy rich.

However, if your financial needs are truly massive right now (without paying heed to societal taunts) none of the above matters. We live in a world where money is not unimportant. Look to switch to a better law firm by getting referrals through friends. Your current firm is clearly not being fair to you.

And age… its all in the mind. I quit law for 7 years only to rejoin it at the age of 32 with barely a couple of years PQE under my belt. I am now an equity partner at 40. Not to say your life may turn out the same. Just try to find your space and most importantly your happiness. Everything else truly becomes irrelevant as you will come to realize later in life.

This is the reason I left chamber litigation. I was the school topper, and by the third year of my litigation practice with a well standing AoR, I was earning 35k. I was 27 by then. I was so sick earning literally the least amount of money out of all my school peers, including the kids who barely even passed school. At that point, I was earning less than a school acquaintance of mine, who bloody dropped out of school and joined a BPO - he earned 75k. And I was dumbfounded. Numb. That day, I decided that this 10 year (and potentially longer) gestation period in individual/ chamber practice was not going to cut it for me. At all. I am not debating that a litigation lawyer will earn more per annum, in the longer run. But I was not ready to waste away my youth and my parents' last few fruitful years, waiting for this gold at the end of my rainbow. I decided to say fuck it. I dropped chamber litigation like a hot potato and joined a tier 3 litigation law firm. Within that firm, I transitioned to corporate law. Then I shifted to a tier 1 law firm. All this took a lot of hard work, but at least I was getting paid decently while doing the same hard work I was putting in at the chamber. I am now sitting at almost a crore in salary per annum at a tier 1 law firm. Ditching individual litigation was the best decision of my life. And I have never looked back. This path opened up so many doors for me, which I had not even contemplated while fully spent and busy in my shitty chamber life. I have the option to move abroad, move at a senior position in-house and what not. I earn more than anyone at my age in my entire extended family and friend circle. I am no longer that kid who people mocked as 'tu court ke bahar table lagakar toh nahi baith jaega na ha ha ha', but that uncle to whom people bring their kids for counselling. I mean, mostly, fuckem for making my life difficult earlier, but the point in case being - chamber litigation is definitely not for middle class kids with no family member working in law or with some other heavy-duty connections.

Chambers are structured only to benefit the lawyer in question and none of his juniors, and no one else. It is a losing proposition from the get go and is inherently structured as an exploitative setup. When I started as a chamber junior, my boss had the gall to pay his driver more than he paid me as my first salary (my first salary was 12k). It felt so derogatory, it broke me. My girlfriend at the time refused to marry me till I increased my salary. Man, what a tough time in life that was. You are not alone brother, keep your head down and your chin up. If you have half a brain and the will to work super hard, screw your chamber, screw your boss, join a law firm. Any law firm. You will thank me later. Screw UPSC, screw MBA screw everything else. Law firms are exploding, in size and number, and there is limitless, and (mostly) meritocratic potential in being a law firm lawyer today. Our profession is getting increasingly corporatized, just like the economy. Have fun while you are at it. You are still young, it is not too late, and you are not the only one feeling these feelings. There are many of us in the same boat. I really do believe, that it is the darkest before dawn. Hang in there.

I’m barely a kid. I’m very old actually. I don’t see the point of continuing this discussion. More persons than you have foreign degrees from elite institutions. I have one too. I earned mine because I was hungry for knowledge. I really like universities as spaces and I want Indian universities to be among the best of them. Expressing concerns about fairness in hiring process and pointing out that all that glitters is not gold is not the same thing as wanting mediocrity. You have some us v them victim stuff you should work through.

Do people who are interning with referrals convert/get a ppo? Or do they only give callbacks to the ones who intern without contacts? I’ve been told by the HR that kids who come in through referrals are not called back, but I know of some who absolutely were! Please enlighten me.

I would strongly recommend not joining T&S Law. ▮▮▮ They typically offer a four-month “assessment internship” where they claim to evaluate your performance, after which they may convert you to a Junior Associate with a salary of ₹30,000 per month. However, even after completing the four-month assessment period, many candidates are not converted. Even when someone is converted, the firm often does not issue a proper offer letter.

Another major issue is that the firm is heavily influenced by the parents of the partners, who interfere in the functioning of the firm. ▮▮▮

If you have these during your internship then you will have no problem for most issue in arbitration matter, these book can be referred to know the position of law

I am gonna give you a different perspective (NLUD alumni from a lower middle class background). May or may not apply to your situation.

I would have opted for a drop and then given it my all next year because the cost of slsp or jgls is just too high for a law degree from a college that is not counted as "tier 1".

For the record, I understand you can do great even as. jgls and/or sls grad, and people have in fact done great. Just that odds are relatively stacked against you.

You should be able to get into a good private college even next year (including the two above).

Do not take a drop. NLUs are overrated when it comes to placements. Sure apart from the top 5, others are just similar. Moreover Symbi and Jindal both have international collaborations that nobody talks about. My friends did a semester abroad, all paid, thanks to the university since he has a great acadmic track record.

If you want litigation, university doesn't matter.

If you want judiciary, university doesn't matter.

If you want civil services, university doesn't matter.

If you want corporate, internships and PPO matter more.

Hey. I was just wondering, what is the estimated pqe of these associates he hired? I am a fresher, so I was wondering if there's a certain pqe that they prefer. If you feel you can't disclose that, please let me know what you think should be the least pqe to join trilegal laterally.

Better to do a 3 year llb from DU, NLS or NLUO or any other NLUs that provide 3 years courses. The point being, you're not adding anything with a ballb/ballb degree. My suggestion try DU, it's easier and will give you more time for internships, especially running ones. Otherwise in terms of brand NLS is the best. Please use the 3 years wisely or else you will waste years pursuing a master's that is absolutely not required except for a career in Academia. The amount of misguided kids I see pursuing masters and even PhD, without any interest in joining academia, is shocking. Please plan the next 3-5 years carefully.

As someone who has previously interned there (and had friends who interned there), be warned that the senior associates will be rude, and face-time partners almost non-existent. Junior associates are relatively nicer, but would not exactly be there to mentor you.

However, the worst part of the firm would be their HR, who will be rude to you and of no help should you need it (especially once the internship is over).

And if you are interning with the GC team, be prepared to get work from the disputes team sitting in the delhi office post work hours.

One of my younger colleagues had very poor written and oral advocacy skills. However, he was tenacious, would never backway from challenges, and we knew he would be the first person in and last person out on tough days. He had good people skills too. I hired him at a time when I needed someone who could handle last minute challenges as our team was often engaged at the last minute in many litigations.

He is doing very well today.

Would he have been hired without al push? No. In fact, the person who interviewed him for my team rejected him.

This is an exception and not the norm. 9 out of 10 people are hired for drafting, research and then groomed for better advocacy skills.

You know your weakness. Work on it.
