Throughout law college and my career, I have struggled with the idea of a career as a legal professional.

I love the philosophy behind the law, but not the ugliness with which it is practiced.

I love the ideas of law that forms the basic elements of a post-enlightenment civic society, but not the presence of contract attorneys in the market - who hack and master their way through tricks and formulas and reduce the job of a draftsman to that of a clerk proficient in English and legalese.

I love the ideas of justice and institutional role towards nation building and developing a civic attitude for a futuristic society but hate the fact that the procedural laws are seen more as strategic modalities to be exploited to shift perceptions in the eyes of the judiciary, than a genuine attempt at resolving disputes.

I love the idea of aiding just and fair outcomes, but grudge the fact that those who need it the most cannot afford to pay in the least bit at all and I cannot expect the matrix of societal expectations to truly deliver there. Moreover, the influence of police and their disregard for police procedures, and their nexus with politicians completely corrupt the ultimate outcomes - which make me lose heart in even taking the first step.

I thought I'd love arbitration, but the way the courts continue to interfere and because of the fact that for 20 odd years, so many litigations arose merely because the darned 1996 Act was shoddily drafted without clarifying difference between seat and venue, I cannot avoid thinking this way - that vested interests craft laws and legislations designed to benefit existing privileges - so there's a political economy behind it, and not the heart to produce just outcomes.

I thought I'd love teaching, but the nightmarish stories of students stressed in the chase of high paying jobs, and burdened under high college fees influencing them to disregard study of law in a leisurely manner (that helps in deeper absorption), and the administrative burdens and mindless pressures of research intensity suck out all the joy that I could envision in it.

I want to be associated with law, but how do I?

Family has been in really bad debt from childhood. I'm in a T1 and make good money, but it's just not enough. Things are really bad. Graduated only last year, so I know I'll earn more over time, but I need to hear this from someone who has been through this - does it get better?

Couldn't agree more, the fifth years who were literally screaming and making all sorts of gesticulations were an absolute embarrassment and even disrespectful to ▮▮▮. They had no equanimity, didn't know how to talk and also, the fact that literally nobody asked them to put on this stupid theatrical show, you did't represent any of us. What happened was deeply unfortunate, the statement that was read out with the demands were reasonable but to go about it in this vile and vengeful manner was extremely unwarranted. Also, let's please also raise the issue of the increasing drug and alcohol abuse in hostels (something that was selectively left out of the statement).

So much misinformation in one post. I was standing right outside his room along with the rest of the crowd (First Floor just so you believe me).

Firstly, the warden pushed open the door, not the students. Infact initially, it was Vansh's own friends who were pleading the warden to not break open the door since his body was right by it.

Secondly, it is so mean to say that it was the student community alone "scrambling to save his life" when it was literally SRMs private vehicle which was used to take him to the hospital.

Finally, he did not die because of 'criminal negligence'. He didn't die because he fell into a pothole in the campus or got electrocuted by a live wire, he died because he literally committed sucide. It can't be negligence when it's a case of fucking sucide. Read the law.

Having said that, yes, the nurse did not know how to properly perform CPR and yes, there is no permanent ambulance in the campus and these are all valid concerns which were raised before the registrar and were accepted by him.

Moreover, there were students during yesterday's Preamble saga who were literally trying to raise the absence of 'SAC' this semester as an issue before the Registrar, all while Vansh's friends were actually trying to raise a valid list of demands before the VC and Registrar.

All of this is extremely disheartening to see.

This is deeply distressing and emblematic of the larger, systemic apathy that plagues NLU admins. Yes, NLUs are government institutions, but must their administrators embody the worst stereotypes of indifferent, bureaucratic red tape from the 1980s? Their blatant disregard for students' well-being is inexcusable. NLUs are meant to be sanctuaries of legal education. Instead, they have become sites of neglect, where students are pushed to the brink with no institutional support.

This year alone has seen an alarming number of student suicides, beginning with NLUD at the very start of the academic year. This isn’t just about compromising the future of the legal fraternity—it’s about basic human lives now. Something must be done. Now.

DSK Legal is not an unknown firm and quite reputed, to have volunteered for an embarrassing show cause notice with its strong wordings? First BCI tries to sneak in an amendment in newly proposed bill as per which first they tried to expand the definition of 'legal practitioners' to include corporate lawyers as well - meaning that they are taking a view that corporate lawyers are not 'advocates', which means then advertisement bar should not apply to corporate lawyers. DSK legal launched those advertisements precisely taking advantage of the same.

Now BCI has not only retracted the proposed amendments, but they have also clarified that the existing definition of advocate in the current legislation is all expansive enough.

to answer your question we have to delve into a more fundamental query - what is the purpose of language? if I answer it as being able to communicate effectively to more people I would suggest a language spoken by many not a few, with easier grammar and adequate media presence (and no not oneoff viral youtube hits).

Asking an Indian to learn Sanskrit today to work it as a link language is like asking an European to learn Latin.

The fresher mindset is a great asset since it lets you learn new things without your ego getting in the way. Look at partners in large law firms who have lost the ability to learn new things since there is no space in their head anymore. Get into something which interests you which you can see yourself do for the foreseeable future, and enjoy the process. Keep up the learning mindset and you will go a long way.

You want to work under a very mediocre partner who is lowkey abusive, has dearth of clients and is actively disliked by each and every team member? The firm that practically pays you peanuts and you are expected to sink in 12-16 hours of your time? You arent going to be getting more than 30-35k at the very best

If OP is a general category student struggling to get a job, I think it’s perfectly legit advice to go to NZ.

It's not trivial. It's going to become definitive media sourced in the future. Knowledge decay is real. When that happens, then whatever is more resilient in terms of visibility and appearance maintains knowledge development. It's trivial to you because you under-estimate its importance.
